I tried to ref the wheels . As you can see, it did not help much.AND THUS HERE IS MY FIRST EVER REAL PICTURE OF THIS CHARACTER despite the fact that he's actually been around for like a year now. I don't draw him because of his hair. His hair slays me every time and the carnage is TERRIBLE just TERRIBLE
also OOPS the original idea was that the wheel(s) actually go RIGHT ON THROUGH HIM but I seem to have forgotten about that idea somewhere along the way, probably because it makes no sense anyway. ALL RIGHT, NO BLOODY MESS HERE, MOVE ALONG NOW

BUT SERIOUSLY love that background, tbh i think these layered, textur-y backgrounds of yours are my favourites. also the way you layered up those huge abstract vectory sections of white and darkdark red and you can still see some of the pattern underneath is just delicious
HNGGHHH ALSO I LOVE DARK SKIN AND THAT COLOUR IS SO LOVELY also the lighter gradient patch on his hand is so cool its like he's reaching into a beam of sunlight and it only just reaches and its kinda cool to me but i am retarded so dont go by that

This looks great! Nice textures, interesting composition, unique color choices...I like it!
One word of advice, though: if you have trouble drawing the character's hair so much that it prevents you from drawing him, then redesign his hair (and if that, in turn, means you have to redesign other things, do it). I know from the exact same experience (my problem was with the character's hair, too) that trying to draw a character that you're not comfortable with drawing is an absolute nightmare. So detach yourself a little and fix it.
Sorry if I seem unkind or preachy, I just hate to see someone suffer the same thing I was going through recently. It really will help in the long run, I promise.

and OH MAN I have a tendency towards overstatement -- his hair isn't really THAT terrible for me, I just have to put a little more effort and practice into it ;___;
in fact my problem right now is probably that i'm too comfortable drawing most of the things i draw, i feel like the thing i need to do most right now is to break out of my comfort zone! 9^6

I found that breaking out of my comfort zone really helped me evolve my art to the next level, but remember to keep drawing the things you love so it doesn't become to unfamiliar.

you shouldn't avoid problems like, that, though. use reference pictures and work it out until you get it right, it's what I do. The arist should make the art. the art shouldn't run the artist because they happened to accidently make a pencil slash that ended up art. people should know what they're doing. Well, yes and no. You do make a good point in not letting the art control you, and there's a lot to be said for working through a problem and overcoming it, but sometimes that's just not going to happen. Few artists alive can draw anything and everything with perfect continuity, so when a character comes along that is so difficult to draw consistently that it discourages you to draw him or her, then it's okay to make changes to accommodate the situation. Ultimately, in my case, I came up with a design that I liked better than the original in every single way, so it worked out for the best.
But really, you do make a good point. I agree. I would try your method first.

I think it turned out great! Don't trip that your wheel didn't turn out exactly as your reference image...it did it's job, a reference is exactly that, a reference, like a model. As an artist you're allowed to take it and go in any direction you feel like.
Your composition looks awesome; use of contrasting colors (warm & cool), textures, perspective, character & style all go great together!

oh wow, i love the character himself, but then the clothing and lighting and the sky behind him all tie everything into a great big work of art!! haha. the colors are just fantastic here. this is pure awesome-sause. : ) keep it up!!
