Middle of the night. Konkan coast. India. Breeding season.

Full moon in the sky, it was a lovely night. The time had finally come for that young oriental dwarf kingfisher to mate. He was excited ! He had his heart set on the very first female he met that day, whose dark eyes were quite intimidating. Nevermind! He was not defeatist in nature. After all, his courtship process had been fully sorted out beforehand. He could already picture himself excavate the best tunnel of the coast to incubate their eggs. It was definitely a sad event to see his zeal dissipated when the female bird flew off the branch almost as soon as he tried to engage with her. Was his plumage not bright enough? His catch not appetising enough? He could not even tell as she left without a tweet. Now he would have to wait for tomorrow morning and try again with -hopefully- a more receptive female. Plenty of fish...they say. But whatever the adage, for the time being he was experiencing doubts and a cold feeling down his feathers. Was it loneliness?
