omggg i love thiss, the problem is that when i do the shadows, i don't know if i have to play with opacity and dithering, or doing it normal...i don't know, shadows and highlights are the best things that could happen to a drawing but they're also very difficultΒ Β

What program do you use to paint?

In the time since making this tutorial, I've found that setting the flow of the brush to 40-60% helped a great deal with smoother-looking shading. I also let pressure control the opacity of it.

what kind of brushes do you use? and do you change the opacity of any of them?

ancalinar In reply to xxnillyxx [2016-08-21 01:49:40 +0000 UTC]
For skin, I mostly use the stock hard round photoshop brush. Its opacity is tied to the pressure I apply with my stylus and I vary the flow (lower flow for softer look) to blend individual strokes. Soft round for some more blending. :]

oh thank you, this is so helpful! and really beautiful finished product! I was wondering though, how exactly did you adjust the skin so it wouldn't 'sink' back against the hair backdrop?? Β

i always look at these tutorials that people make and go... wow. i wish i could get past the sketch part.
but this does explain highlights a lot better than a lot of tutorials i've seen. i mean, i've watched people use purples and maroons and blues in skin tone, and it looks great, but i've never really understood where to put them. this breaks it down so much better! (wouldn't have thought of yellow for the forehead, either)
hopefully i'll get a chance to try this out! thanks!

This might be a noob question, but how do you hit the lines with colour? Β i can never figure out how to change the line colours without affecting the edges of the lines too much.

miriiart In reply to Ch4rm3d [2014-09-03 11:08:02 +0000 UTC]
There should be a "lock transparent pixels" button somewhere [depending on what you use; mine is just by the layer lock button] and that'll allow you to change the line colour!
It took me 3 years to figure out how to do it -_-

ancalinar In reply to miriiart [2014-09-03 12:19:32 +0000 UTC]
Depending on how certain I am of my colours for the lines, I also use a clipping mask on top of the lines layer for the colour β that way it is much easier to select all of the pixels.

Oh, thank you very much!!
I didn't know you could do that

ancalinar In reply to miriiart [2014-09-03 14:29:30 +0000 UTC]
Yeah β it lets you be sloppy and then you can select stuff with the magic wand much easier (because PS still takes the invisible pixels into account) so you can Cmnd+U hue shift them for minor tweaks. :b

I'm not sure where it is in SAI but it should be somewhere xD
No problem

purepolygon In reply to miriiart [2014-09-03 13:55:12 +0000 UTC]
Super easy in SAI. just create a new layer above your "Lines" layer. Then, with the new layer you just created selected, check the box (in the layers panel) that says "Clipping Group". Now just paint away on this new layer. It will only affect the Lines.Β

Very nice and helpful tutorial, thanks a lot. Even though I work traditional, I will still try the procedure. If I ever get this done (copying from your tutorial), would it be ok, to share the result here?

This is basic, but great. It gives a basic process instead of going into color theory like a lot of similar tutorials do when it comes to skin.

Cool! This will really help. I wonder though, how do you kinda, "smudge" the colors together? I'm just asking because no tutorial has that information, and I use the smudge tool, which sucks.
π: 0 β©: 1
ancalinar In reply to kysl7777 [2014-09-02 21:19:35 +0000 UTC]
I never use the smudge tool β just vary the opacity and how feathered my brush is.
