It's a very nice painting, but watching it I wonder : why a bridge if the crevice stops less than a mile away ?

because the crevice stops at the rocky slopes of a hill, as indicated in the foreground and how the figure is standing/kneeling. You can't drive your carriage through there.

I love that one, lone little bridge out there⦠This place is desolate but not completely abandoned. People still come here (or came here, as the case may be) often enough to warrant that one little bridge being built. Maybe this is part of a trade route or something.
