Description My entry for the TheArtOrder.com challenge Eowyn and the Nazgul, always wanted to draw this part of the book so it was a lot of fun to execute. The thing is pretty big though at 19x40 inches so my hand really hurts now ><

Nazgul are the winged creatures that the Ringwraiths ride on. If you don't know what Ringwraiths are, I think it's time to read Lord of the Rings.

KehnnyJoge In reply to dehydromon [2012-07-08 04:21:30 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the Ringwraiths ARE the Nazgul
nazg = Β«ringΒ» + Γ»l = Β«wraithΒ»
The flying steed are mentioned in the book as a flying creature, but there is no specific term for them, they are just the "flying steed".

Oh, you're right. I was thinking of one of the Lord of the Rings cards I had for the NazgΓ»l that showed one of them on one of the creatures. I guess I didn't notice the rider.

KehnnyJoge [2012-07-06 16:08:47 +0000 UTC]

Amazing!
It looks just like a XIX century engraving.
The scene is pretty dramatic with the king Theonen laying and Eowyn taying to protect him. I liked the inclusiΓ³n of Merry, who is usually omited in order to give more protagonism to the contenders.
It's a nice panoramic of the battle, with a very well designed Minas Tirith (Which are also usually omited)
Finally, the Witch King, he steels the scene in his flying monture. It's remarcable how you draw him in an "old" style, by this I mean it's not overpowered or exagerated in any form yet his presesnce is still terrifying, the crown and the maze are unmistakably well caracterized.
The flying monture deserves a mention by itself. It not the Peter Jackson's reptilian-worm looking thing, wich looks great, don't get me wrong, but your version is much more likely to be the flying monster Tolkien was imagining: a very traditional and sober dragon shaped head, similar to those of John Howe or Ted Nasmith, but with your particular sign. The same comment about the Witch kings aplies here, not few times I see an excelent dragon/monster/knight concept overloaded with unncesesary spikes, shapes or points.
Overall, I simply love it, as a Tolkien illustrator's fan I can tell you have little or nothing to envy to them.
