YAY!!!! This is exactly what I've been looking for!
Perfect help!!! I thought I totally screwed up a fanart I've been working on because I outlined it with pen and not alot of other artists (or at least the ones I've found) do that
What kind of colored pencils do you use? It's kind of hard to tell from the picture.

I hope it's not expensive...

P.s. if you buy a set of pencils - choose one where are peach (skin-tone) color and pink color. You can draw skin tone without then, but having peach (skin-tone) pencil saves a lot of time. Pink is good for drawing blush.

I use Koh-i-noor Mondeluz pencils (watercolor), but there are cheaper "school" version of them Koh-i-noor Aquarell (the quality is the same, only graphite is a bot thinner and less colors in sets).

It might be hard to find them in your country because they're more common in East Europe, but they should be available in US also.

They're normally cheaper than other professional pencils, but they're really good, much better than Lyra in my opinion and better that Faber Castel, but it's a matter of taste. They're a bit softer than Caran'd'Ache.

Anyway, the brand is not than much important, you just have to be comfortable with them. If you have opportunity to try some pencils when buying, the line should be neat, the motion smooth, without scratching paper, he color should be even, and you should be able to draw fast lines normally. Also they shouldn't leave much graphite dust while drawing or crumble if you apply pressure. Good pencils don't break easily if you throw them accidentally on the floor or while sharpening. *note: if watercolor pencils break easily while sharpening it might be due to they were kept in a place with high humidity, not because of quality.

Watercolor or not is also not very important for this technique.

P.s. I would be happy to see the result.

I'll try to find them but I just use crayola color pencils...super cheap and money is really tight right now...
Sad...I don't think I can afford any professional pencils worth $80 with all the colors I need...
...Although I am saving up for some Prismacolor pencils soon but I probably won't be able to buy those for either another week or month (probably month since school is sucking me dry)...
Until then those tips are really helpful and I think I'll practice the technique on some other drawings of some of my OCs from my stories before I unleash two pieces that will be my pride and joy...
'Til then practice makes perfect.
Thank you so much (:

If you want to practice - you can scan your work and print it, and color a printed version, especially if you're afraid to ruin it.

You're welcome!
Technologies can be a good help )
Also when you draw with pencils - it's better to use not very smooth paper, and not very thin. Strong, well defined texture is not perfect either because it'll give you some troubles drawing accurate lines. Just a little bit rough, so pencil wouldn't "slide" and would have a nice grip with paper. Printer paper is not the best option for colored pencils, but for practice will do.

Really nice job with this tutorial, you have explained the process really well.
I'm a coloured pencil guy myself and checked this out to see if I could pick up any extra tips, seems like I go about my art in a very similar fashion

Thank you! I'm glad you like it. Not that I explained process her, rather wrote some hints The process itself is a rather individual thing for everyone.

I agree.
Hints can be very helpful though and I had a look to compare how you go about it to how I go about it... you never stop learning.

Cool tutorialll!!!
In truth I don't like too much they because... Hmmmm... I think that ruins some secrets of an artist...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngieVX In reply to illusorya [2010-02-19 19:44:48 +0000 UTC]

I did it because people asked me (though I don't do anything special here) - and beside - the secret is in your hands - and what's in the tutorials - just some tips (actually too often useless)

you know, we use the same technique...but for some reason, your drawings turn out to be way better than mine

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngieVX In reply to Stephy-McFly [2010-02-18 19:36:44 +0000 UTC]

I think everyone uses almost the same technique - i just use color pencils more often... by the way, how are the things with new markers going?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stephy-McFly In reply to AngieVX [2010-02-18 19:42:58 +0000 UTC]

....not.....so well

I tested a bit with them, just doodles and stuff, but I'm not really happy with the way it turns out, so I'll try a bit more before I really get started with one of the linearts

And right now, I'm doing one with pencils...and I won't be lazy again this weekend!

AngieVX In reply to Stephy-McFly [2010-02-18 19:48:15 +0000 UTC]

What is it??? Is it Bleach related???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stephy-McFly In reply to AngieVX [2010-02-18 20:06:46 +0000 UTC]

......yep
I hope it'll turn out good, it does up to now ^^

and when that's done I have to color my Zombie Powder fanart

and then I have Grimmy, and some Disney stuff and still some Bleach and Naruto related stuff.

I want to finish at least 2!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngieVX In reply to Stephy-McFly [2010-02-18 20:08:14 +0000 UTC]

Stephy-McFly In reply to AngieVX [2010-02-18 20:13:48 +0000 UTC]

I hope that I won't finish the 2 smaller ones though ^^
because that would be like cheating.....

AngieVX In reply to Stephy-McFly [2010-02-18 20:21:18 +0000 UTC]

You mean 2 BIG???

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stephy-McFly In reply to AngieVX [2010-02-18 20:26:21 +0000 UTC]

well, 'big' is not the best word for it. I just want to finish at least one that has more details, abd maybe a smaller (=simpler) one
I actually want to finish them all right now, but that's rather impossible

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AngieVX In reply to Stephy-McFly [2010-02-18 20:30:40 +0000 UTC]

I have a tendency to add details during drawing

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Stephy-McFly In reply to AngieVX [2010-02-21 13:51:55 +0000 UTC]

I usually don't add a lot of new detail during drawing...it's usually in my lineart...I have very detailed lineart
