“What are you looking at, Johnny?” Johnny’s mother, Sarah, stood in the doorway, looking quite a bit like her son: Thin, pale, with dark hair. Her eyes were a dark brown, and at the moment, she wore a very concerned expression.
Young Johnny Toast was sitting in his room, reading a large, dusty tome. He looked up at his mother.
“I’m reading about the local haunted areas, mother.” He said enthusiastically.
Johnny’s mother sighed, and closed her eyes.
“Johnny, what have I been telling you about all of that ghost nonsense?” she said, exasperated.
Johnny replied, “That no good will ever come of pretending to hunt ghosts… but…”
She cut him off. “And what else have I been telling you?”
“That, as a ten year old, I should look at my future… but…” He replied again.
“And…?” She prompted.
Johnny looked away, frustrated with his mother’s lack of understanding. “That I’m being very childish… mother.”
“Exactly. This is all a very childish game. If your father-“ Her voice broke, and she looked away.
Johnny closed the book, and said nothing.
After a moment to compose herself, she looked back at Johnny and said “Anyways, no more ghost nonsense. Understand?”
Johnny nodded, and stood up. Johnny’s mother picked up the book, and went down to sit on the front porch.
After a moment, Johnny stood up, grabbed his bag, and walked downstairs.
He looked around his family’s small house, then walked out onto the front porch, and picked a daisy from the garden. Johnny’s mother looked up sharply.
“Just what are you doing, Johnny?” She said cuttingly.
“I’m visiting father.” He said quietly.
Her expression softened, and she nodded, saying “Look after yourself.”
Johnny walked onto the side of the road, and began the two block trip to his father.
As he walked, the older neighbors waved at him, and the kids his age threw insults at him. He hardly even noticed, he was so wrapped up in the issue his mother had with ghosts and paranormal entities.
He walked into a cemetery, and stood in front of a grave.
It read, “Nathan Johnathan Toast. Loving husband, father and son. You will be missed.”
