Description I'm cosplaying Vriska @ Tracon this fall and this messy tut is mainly for my HS cosplay group mates, to show 'em how I on my behalf solved the horrid howthehellamIsupposedtomakethesehornsohgodhelpme-problem. I think I did pretty gooooooood. My way.

So yeah. If this somehow happens to be of help to someone, Awesome! My work here is done.

cosplay © me
Homestuck © Andrew Hussie, respectively.

[EDIT] FAQ
-I got the styrofoam from a friend that worked at a construction site, blue EVA insulation foam scraps. It's sold at DIY/hardware stores in huge blocks.
-Any air dry clay will do, fimo airlight will get the most light effect tho.
-I dunno about the magnet-method since these might be too heavy, up to you to try it out. I experimented with snaps tho and those didn't work for me at least. So strings it was. Sturdiness accomplished. The headband is pretty easily hidden under the hair and/or through the wig.

-BY ALL MEANS, BE CREATIVE AND EXPERIMENT FURTHER! This is not the only and correct way to do this, just one solution I figured out. Such is the magic of cosplay. : )

Any idea where this would be sold? Like Home Depot or something?

since I'm not familiar with specific stores outside Finland it's hard to say. I suggest to google it or go ask your local DIY / hardware stores, I bet the professionals there can help you further : )

Would it be possible for someone to make Aradia horns using this method but with modifications of course?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to Broxsh [2013-04-30 14:15:34 +0000 UTC]

well yes, foam and iron wire at the core, some very light modelling clay, like fimo airlight at the top

I thought so but just wanted to make sure. Have you made aradias horns by this meat god yourself?

I may remake my horns with this method..... I hope I don't burn them again though, we burnt fef's horns on Sunday!!

...burn? use air drying clay, it needs no burning

This is fabulous and I have a question I'm making horns and wanted to use your guide but what is paper clay? Any ideas on where I can get it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to Rockheart17 [2013-04-09 21:19:43 +0000 UTC]

use just any modelling clay you can find in crafts stores, the lighter the better. I'm not even sure if paperclay is the right word for the stuff i used. Fimo airlight would be quite dreamy for this, it weighs practically nothing

Anniina85 In reply to NattWiltshaw [2013-04-15 21:33:06 +0000 UTC]

yes good! use a lot of glue to make them stable, since you used only one pair of strings there

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NattWiltshaw In reply to Anniina85 [2013-04-17 16:06:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm planning on screwing them to a headband to make them extra-extra stable :3

I'm also going to be sanding down the bumpy bits once they're dry too.

Hmm insteresting I did the same thing almost...But It failed. So I ended up with super heavy and delicate pure clay horns instead.

I guess it was the styrofoam. It was too hard and everytime I tried to cut it...It would fall apart.

Plus I used the wrong clay.

But now I now know the right way! ^^

(Say what type of styrofoam did you use?)

Anniina85 In reply to AnonThatNobody [2013-02-19 01:43:40 +0000 UTC]

I got mine as scraps from a friend who's a construction worker, but the DIY stores etc. should have it since it's used in building houses and shit

sorry if you already answered this question, but what kind of glue did you use? not even hot glue is working on mine :c

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to IbeCaramelldansen [2013-02-09 14:55:31 +0000 UTC]

oh? how on earth can hot glue fail? it should stick to those threads like.. well.. GLUE. mysterious. anyways, I used just erikeeper

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

IbeCaramelldansen In reply to Anniina85 [2013-02-09 15:20:15 +0000 UTC]

i used air-dry clay so maybe that has something to do with it? it sticks to the headband but not to the clay. you touch them and they fall right off. >< but thanks! ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to IbeCaramelldansen [2013-02-09 17:33:10 +0000 UTC]

ohhhh. yeah the clay might do just that if you tried to attach the horns straight to the headband with the glue only? if there are the threads also, they kinda keep the whole thing together and it doesn't matter if the glue sticks to the clay or not, it supports it just enough by being there while attached to other things.
Good luck with your noble quest!

I used this cheap paperclay/modelling clay/what ever I bought at one finnish store [link] and the fixative is by Hanart, normal stuff for art
