Description I'm cosplaying Vriska @ Tracon this fall and this messy tut is mainly for my HS cosplay group mates, to show 'em how I on my behalf solved the horrid howthehellamIsupposedtomakethesehornsohgodhelpme-problem. I think I did pretty gooooooood. My way.

So yeah. If this somehow happens to be of help to someone, Awesome! My work here is done.

cosplay © me
Homestuck © Andrew Hussie, respectively.

[EDIT] FAQ
-I got the styrofoam from a friend that worked at a construction site, blue EVA insulation foam scraps. It's sold at DIY/hardware stores in huge blocks.
-Any air dry clay will do, fimo airlight will get the most light effect tho.
-I dunno about the magnet-method since these might be too heavy, up to you to try it out. I experimented with snaps tho and those didn't work for me at least. So strings it was. Sturdiness accomplished. The headband is pretty easily hidden under the hair and/or through the wig.

-BY ALL MEANS, BE CREATIVE AND EXPERIMENT FURTHER! This is not the only and correct way to do this, just one solution I figured out. Such is the magic of cosplay. : )

hi, hopefully you can answer this question, but would this work with barrettes? and if it only works with a headband, how do you keep the headband from looking obvious?

you mean those hair clip thingies? with karkat etc. maybe, but these longer ones need more support, they'd go all wobbly and fall if separately attached to the wig.

I hide the headband under the hair and hairspray the locks to the place, it'll show just a bit at the "root" of the horn but if the headband is narrow and black, there's not much to see. i also place the headband "ends" through the wig, so it kinda lockes in place no matter how I move

Thank you. So much.
But, how much of the clay did you get?
Or, how much do you think would be needed for horns about 10-12cm long?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to PrinceNezumion [2012-10-10 22:40:43 +0000 UTC]

not that much, depends on how thick you're gonna apply it of course. my package had 500g and there's plenty of the stuff for many horns.

Anniina85 In reply to Eye-Wuv-Manga124 [2012-09-10 23:56:00 +0000 UTC]

they're about 12-13cm long, they could be smaller, I kept hitting them everywhere I went : D I can't even remember how many times I've superglued the tips together again

StanxKyleFan [2012-09-07 19:34:42 +0000 UTC]

wow thats cool! i did my Gamzee horns by putting Model Magic around tin foil, but that made them look a bit lumpy to be honest and they werent the same size in the end : o( I like your meathod!

The part i did like about mine though, i used bolts to keep the horns in place, would you reccomend that or did glue really work amazing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to StanxKyleFan [2012-09-10 23:53:00 +0000 UTC]

yeah, with tin foil there's always some air in there that might collapse etc. lumps might happen.

umm, with the strings the glue works very well, it locks them on place while the string does the work. I just made a couple of mindfang horns and used hot glue and sturdy cotton string, nothing will break these babies. I think without the string the glue might break easily. I have no exp of using bolts but if the material can handle it without breaking then sure!

it's the stuff they use in building houses and shit, it's sturdy as hell so it's a bit hard to cut but it's perfect for making such a thin shapes <3
thanks!

Schizophallic In reply to ??? [2012-06-05 17:29:15 +0000 UTC]

Im going to be remaking some horns for me and my friends. We originally used model magic but that took forever, so you may want to let people know that the stuff isn't the best. Ours ended up with cracks galore, so I had to mud them and sand them and then do it again before I could paint them. It's light weight but not the best.
A few questions:
What brand of paperclay did you use? and where can I buy it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Anniina85 In reply to Schizophallic [2012-06-11 14:34:21 +0000 UTC]

sorry this didn't work out for you, all clays have a habit of cracking a little if it's dried in a too dry place too fast, and if you haven't handled it enough before sculpting. but I don't see the cracking to be that big of a problem though, as you can yes fill 'em and then sand them. These aren't made in a day.

i have no experience of model magic, I used this cheap paperclay/modelling clay/what ever I bought at one finnish store, I don't think you can find it where you live [link]

Schizophallic In reply to Anniina85 [2012-06-12 00:56:29 +0000 UTC]

Its alright. With model magic I just found alot of cracks and I left it in a airy place too. But we fixed them and they looked great, just took too much time about 1 and a half weeks to have it done and we didn't use much clay.
I found some paperclay and it's amazing, thanks.
