they are in a way. They, as well as Auric's summon are legendary, magical birds infused with the magic of their masters. Hence why Phoenix is pink instead of orange, why Quetzacotl is blue instead of yellow and Willow (formerly Ziz) is yellow instead of blue. Plus the birds are a reference to the legendary birds of pokemon.
