Description
So I've wanted to do a proper reference sheet for my dragon character for years now but have never quite felt I had the necessary level of skill and knowledge to pull it off to my satisfaction. But, I figured that since I'm such a horribly annoying perfectionist (at least when it comes to art...) that day might never come..according to me. So I decided that the only way to learn is by doing. And well, this happened.
I must say I'm rather proud of this one as it seems to be turning out better than I could've hoped. Though admittedly with the amount of erasing, redrawing, effort and research put into it thus far I can't claim to be entirely surprised.
It started out as a simple sketch one lazy afternoon when the power was out for a couple of hours, and then steadily morphed into a truly dedicated work.
What you see here is a basic sketch with relatively detailed musculature which is only there because I first used it to pin down the anatomy of my dragon and will later be utilizing it for drawing the scales correctly as well as shading. They were originally so lightly drawn that I had to darken them for the scanner to pick up. The majority of those lines will be gone in the end product.
The spine was a real issue, as first I had drawn it much too short for my liking, and when I lengthened it I had much trouble getting the right curve to make it look right.
This character is both what I would consider my 'alter-ego' as well as a character I have been RPing for many many years, practically one of my first and the one that's stuck with me the longest. (Though many things have changed since her inception so many years ago).
She is quite small for a dragon, both for one of her age as well as for a dragon in general in her universe. And she is not quite what she appears...
She has a terribly long and in-depth story, one that maybe as many as 3 people know, so I will not be sharing it here.
Anyhow, enjoy this WIP, and be sure to leave me your opinions!

OMG thank you so much for making this! I've spent hours looking for a western dragon that I can use for reference. Hope you don't mind, but I'll be using this as a sort of a basis for a lot of my hand drawings. I'll give credit if need be

o.o Β It told me to add a comment, so...
I randomly found this a while ago and saved it because I loved the light, fluid proportions- much as Lancerey observed. Β It makes sense for dragons to have a light, tight build as flying creatures, and your sketch is very lovely.

great piece and really really helpful as a reference!
i'm going to draw a dragon with pretty similar proportions and i couldn't find a good refernce for the muscles, so thanks for sharing!

This is very well done. I really enjoy how your dragon looks lean and muscular, rather than the clumsy big fairytale dragons that people typically think of. You've got some really crisp line work going on there that I'm extremely envious of, especially the intricate details of the neck and claws.
The human shape for size comparison is also awesome. I'd love to see you digitally render this sometime! It has so much potential to be even more awesome than it already is.

Thanks for taking the time to reply!
The lines are that crisp because it was drawn over an entire A3 page with a mechanical pencil.
On occasion though I have also been known to actually sharpen the led with a razor blade as well to draw in extra detail if the image is drawn a bit too small.
Interestingly enough, that started out as a simple doodle. Nowadays I do pretty much all my drawing in Sketchbook with the tablet as it gives me the feel and style of pencil and paper but allows me the freedom and adaptability of digital.
As for the digital render, I had the base colour and shading down on the same day. Unfortunately the scales are giving me a bit of a headache so I've not gone back to it yet. Though I think what I've learned with metal-shading the last few weeks might help me there as I've learnt some new techniques that could come in handy.

it's a very nice dragon character... but i've just been looking for a picture of a dragon with the right general size and body proportions... just like this one, for YEARS. i have a very similar one, but never found the right reference till now, and it's been holding back the writing of a story i'm doing for SO long. this is fantastic, SO faved.

Oh wow. *Blushes* I'm flattered.
I'm really glad this helps, I've had similar issues with finding dragons that look right proportionally to their size.
This character's size and such is mostly a product of years of RPing with it, and finding out what works and what doesn't for optimal storytelling enjoyment...
So, you saying that I achieved this, is a really really awesome compliment.
Thank you!
Tell me if there is anything else I could do for you. I love dragons (clearly) and working with them in any which way I can. Writings especially.

I don't promise anything, but I'd certainly see what I could do for you depending on what it is you are wanting. ^^
As mentioned in my journal I don't have a lot of time on my hands at the moment so you might have to wait for a while.
But I could certainly try something, and yes, I'd be happy to do it for free. ^^

Thank you very much!
Sorry for my slowness on this, but I've recently managed to land myself a mind-numbingly easy yet time-consuming job.
However, I actually have the base coloured and shaded completely, and am 3/4ths done with the scaling overlay. I'm hesitant to post it though...don't know if I should.
