This is very much an improvement over the original set.
I actually own one, which I have to be honest, looks very incomplete at best, and lazily done at worst. The mods you've done defiantly fix all of the issues present. The worst of the issues that you have fixed greatly has to be the shoulders/neck area, the legs, and the exposed axles and pins. Also love that you made the sword all silver, as the official build makes it blend into his body.

Incomplete is a better way of describing it, The store exclusives tended to have a more rushed design phase from what I remember hearing. The Toysrus exclusives in particular tended to look a bit rough and were always overpriced, Karzahni and Icarax have similar issues to Mata-Nui.
But this guy did have really lazy colors, and looks more cluttered than he really is. The design is actually close to the mata-nui robot, might be cool to build one in silver/dark gray to match it better. There's plenty of good silver armor parts that could smooth the design down further to better match the comic.

Agreed. Never had Icarax, but looking at his pictures did tell me something didn't look right. I did however own the Karzahni set, thus I was able to spot several of the flaws. So you may have a point with store exclusives.
Indeed, especially with the two random bits of silver on the body itself. I honestly believe they should have made the set completely black and gold instead of trying to go with the canister set's color scheme. I've seen people recreate it in silver/dark gray and it looks much better in those colors.

Yeah black and gold would’ve been awesome, I actually think the canister set’s colors are too bland, and switching the yellow out for gold would’ve been a massive improvement on him too

Have to agree with you on that. I don't mind that they made him Keetorange (the type of yellow the pieces that the community named based on how Keetongu was the first with parts of that color), but I do fully agree that since this is Mata Nui wearing the Ignika, they should have acknowledged his importance to the greater story by making him primarily black and gold.
