Love it. All of the elements from the B&W converting worked to your advantage. Great work.

most of what could be commented on has already been said a very interesting effect here, and the light reminds me a bit of water (dont ask its just the whole reflection at the bottom of the pool thing is about the same quality as the light here just smoother of course)

however i can say that something about the bottom right corner bothers me either that or there's just too more light on the left and its not balanced as far as that goes. sorry i cant explain what im thinking. i hope it helped though :/

Yeah, lighting is very hard to get in a non-planned room, and I did notice that actually, I tried a bit of PS work, but couldn't really get it right, so I posted it with imperfections, I like imperfections.

imperfections are a good thing...
but living with them can be so hard DX

My personal preference is to add (fake) film grain when I have too much digital noise. It becomes even more noisy/grainy but the film grain look is somehow more pleasant to look at for me.

aobaob In reply to daYavuz [2009-05-21 11:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm that's an idea, I'll see how it goes. Just a question, if there is a scene you are certain you want grainy do you take the photo with a high ISO, because I tried it the other day, just shooting at 1600 at the results were hideous, even in black and white.

daYavuz In reply to aobaob [2009-05-21 12:16:14 +0000 UTC]

No, that doesn't work with digital, because digital noise is ugly. All grain in my digital pics are added. All grain in my film pics are real (but sometimes enhanced.) Photoshop grain filters are generally not very good, so I have my own textures.

Take the cleanest pic you can, and add a layer of grain that you can then adjust. My camera is permanently on 100 ISO, I don't even know how to change it.

Any reason that digital noise is ugly, just the fact that it is pretentious? You'd think anything film can do, digital can do better...
And when I take photos at ISO 100 with a clear sky or similar toning, there is a lot of grain for some reason. Makes landscapes and sunsets difficult.

daYavuz In reply to aobaob [2009-05-21 13:39:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, noise is not noise, they have characteristics (shape, if you want). For example, digital noise is aligned along horizontal and vertical axes, which tend to create streaks and blocks. Film grain is randomly placed, which I find more pleasing. In dark areas, digital noise creates color noise which (for me) is more noticeable and annoying than luminance noise. Digital noise tends to have sharp boundaries (high frequency components) while film grain is softer (proportionally less high frequency components).

You are saying that at lowest ISO setting your camera produces more noise than at higher settings? Interesting.

I am not sure what is happening, but try a few test shots:

Use (manual) exposure bracketing to see if the underexposed or overexposed frames have less noise when they are adjusted to normal exposure in PS. In general, slightly overexposing (without blowing out highlights) and then reducing exposure in PS should result in less noise in the dark areas, so maybe slight underexposure and then increasing exposure in PS might help with noise in light areas if it is caused by blownout pixels.

Try taking 3-5 identical frames (with tripod) and blending them in PS. If the noise you are seeing is truly random, the averaged image should be less noisy.

Oh I see, its about the placement, thanks a lot for the information, must have taken a long time to write, I'll do my best to remember. I'm not saying that its more at a lower ISO, just in some situations such as subtle changes in tone, or gradations, there is a huge amount of noise at ISO 100. Far more than I consider normal. I followed your advice yet the noise level does not alter at all, it is still abundant. If I overexpose the frame however so that the darkest details are visible, it all disappears, so if I can combine this and the grainy version and get less grain, but there is still a lot too much whited out area visible. Oh well, just got to wait for that D80...

daYavuz In reply to aobaob [2009-05-22 09:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, sounds like your camera's sensor is prone to overexposure.

aobaob In reply to daYavuz [2009-05-22 09:33:33 +0000 UTC]

Could be the reason that if I set my camera to aperture priority it always, always has whited out areas, no matter what the light situation is.

daYavuz In reply to aobaob [2009-05-22 09:46:28 +0000 UTC]

and it doesn't do that in full manual or full automatic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aobaob In reply to daYavuz [2009-05-22 09:49:26 +0000 UTC]

I increase the shutter speed on manual each time by about two clicks, then it works pretty well yet the grain kicks in...

daYavuz In reply to aobaob [2009-05-22 09:54:42 +0000 UTC]

Well, until you get your D80, stick to low dynamic range scenes and/or Photoshop HDRs for landscapes and other high dynamic range subjects.

Only suggestion would be to crop so it's symmetrical. You will have so much fun with a D80.

aobaob In reply to wranglerguy [2009-05-21 07:22:10 +0000 UTC]

Do you mean take away the table? I did originally try that, but the crop was too panoramic for my tastes. I'm very much part of this square crop movement.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

wranglerguy In reply to aobaob [2009-05-21 07:29:09 +0000 UTC]

It could still be 2:3 ratio just centred so it is a balanced left/right mirror image. If you have more image available outside the existing shot you may be about to make it square.

aobaob In reply to wranglerguy [2009-05-21 07:38:49 +0000 UTC]

Nah, the original was very tight, so there is no chance to have a square, I should have thought ahead. I will consider uploading the other crop, thanks you for your help.

Wow- you have used pretty lo-fi gear for this! Casio QV-4000!

Shutter Speed: 125000/1000000 second XD

I'm not making fun, btw. It is cool to use old equipment, as it creates different effects, as shown by this photo.
