The logic behind time travel in FFXIII-2 was never really explained clearly (which is great because it gave me an excuse to draw Alyssa with that face). Mog probably thinks he knows everything there is to know about the subject, and maybe he does.

Your works are always so colorful and detailed, kudos to you!

To be honest, FFXIII-2 disappointed me because there are so many gaps in its logic. :/

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2012-10-20 23:56:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha, awesome, I'm glad you like it! Their expressions were extremely fun to do. xD The notes on the board were added at the last minute, but they really bring everything together so I'm glad I did.

And thanks, I'm glad you like the colors and detail! And yeah, FFXIII-2 was fairly weak in the story and character department, though I thought its gameplay was stronger than XIII. When it started I thought the story would be better than in XIII because it was easier to get into, but all the buildup eventually went nowhere and very little was explained. I was surprised that I ended up liking XIII's story better, but it at least had some character development. I did think Caius was a cool and actually sympathetic villain, though.

In all honesty, both XIII and XIII-2 are guilty pleasures for me because I know they have serious flaws and I understand why people would have been disappointed in them, but they had so much potential (and such detailed art) that I find myself wanting to see more of them, which is what fanart is for.

But OF COURSE, you're most welcome!!
Hehe, the best ideas pop up randomly and at last minute sometimes.

Again, no need to thank me. Agreed, that's how I think, too! I didn't like how the battles start with monsters randomly popping up, but it was really great that this part wasn't as linear as FFXIII. And I think the same about Caius, too! It would be awesome if we got to know more about him and his past, though. I kind of hope that he will be back in Lightning Returns. He has to, otherwise the ending of FFXIII-2 wouldn't make sense at all! >___<

Sometimes I'm afraid how similar the thoughts of two different persons can be. I absolutely agree and feel the same way again.

I want to thank you for always replying to every comment and writing so much and sharing your thoughts. Many great artists (like you ) don't react at all anymore, so that's one of other things I REALLY like about you.

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2012-10-30 11:36:10 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I also preferred being able to see the monsters on the map, but overall I thought they basically made the gameplay what it should have been in XIII. (I feel like XIII-2 would have been better received if it hadn't come on the heels of the mass disappointment over XIII, which I think is a bit of a shame.) What did bother me a lot was only having two characters and that neither of them were the playable characters from XIII. I wasn't overly fond of the monsters and how they didn't gain experience from being used in battle, requiring you to go out of your way to find items and level them up separately from your party. (The accessories were admittedly fun, though. Behemoths with plushies, anyone?) I was rooting throughout the game for Caius to become an ally (actually I was hoping he'd eventually be playable back when I believed I'd eventually gain more characters to choose from), and I would really like to see that happen in Lightning Returns, although it seems unlikely. I do think he and Yeul will be back though, or at least they'd better be after the final scene in FFXIII-2. All I want from Lightning Returns is loads and loads of cutscenes showing the old characters interacting.

Heh, you might not say that if you saw the backlog of unanswered messages I have here; there was a period of about two years when I wasn't responding to anything, and I still feel guilty about that and mean to get around to replying eventually. But I also know how much it means to get a response from another artist, so I'm glad I've been more active lately and I'll try to keep it up.

Zaziki7 In reply to aquanut [2012-11-02 17:57:21 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think I agree except for the battles.
Yeah, two playable characters are simply not enough, and these monsters...ugh! They are only useful if it's Lightning or Sazh (don't know about Snow, I didn't beat him yet... ). And I really liked the crystarium in FFXIII more, too. :/
Okay, the Behemoths etc. with plushies (oLightning with sunglasses or crown ) were too funny!
Oh, Caius as a playable character... how awesome!! Unfortunately I already knew that Serah and Noel are the only characters you are able to control before I started this game, so this idea didn't even come to my mind.
Hm, Lightning will be most likely the only playable character in the new game, so this won't happen as you said. T___T
I really hope they will, glad you hear you think the same!
Ha, agreed!! More old characters from the original FFXIII, please!

Wow, now I admire that you're admitting this and even changed that. Kudos to you!

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2012-11-04 22:01:54 +0000 UTC]

I didn't buy any of the DLC, but I didn't even think of the possibility that doing so would allow dressing up the characters--that would almost be worth it. xD The accessories were definitely the best part of the whole monster system. I pretty much just looked up which monsters were the best to use because I didn't want to waste a huge amount of materials figuring it out myself.

I'll be okay with Lightning being the only playable character as long as the rest of the characters get decent screentime. I'm honestly just glad that Lightning is going to be the main character and not another completely new face. Noel was more than enough for me already. I wasn't really a fan of Noel; I didn't think his backstory was explained in enough detail and in general I thought he just didn't fit in very well with the old cast. I also kept getting this arrogant vibe from him. But maybe if they develop Noel more in Lightning Returns, I'll be less harsh on him.

Heh, thank you. xD

Zaziki7 In reply to aquanut [2012-11-05 18:15:26 +0000 UTC]

Haha, maybe you should download them, it's really funny! xD
And believe me, Lightning (both forms, but especially Valkyrie) is REALLY useful in comparison to these other "creatures". -__-
I've never leveled up anyone but her and Sazh (and other monsters to sacrifice them), and I downloaded them kinda late, so I simply hated this system since my "companions" always died at the beginning of a battle.
I think the DLC "Requiem of the Goddess" is also good, but you need this anyway if you want Valkyrie Lightning.

Oh yes!
And about Noel, I have to admit that I'm one of his fans. But I absolutely understand what you mean and agree again! This lack of backstory and information is a general and serious flaw in FFXIII-2 (same problem with Caius, Yeul, Alyssa, this time traveling system etc.) for me, and he really has this "arrogant vibe" from time to time as you said and which I don't really like. Heh, I really hope so!

I know I'm repeating myself over and over, but you're most welcome!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2012-11-06 12:20:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I bet it is pretty cool to use them in battle. My problem with the DLC is that I'm a huge cheapskate and never want to pay for extra content when I can look up videos of it online. (I still need to finish watching the cutscenes for Requiem of a Goddess... I will do that at some point.) And I already got platinum on XIII-2 so I don't really have a reason to continue playing it, since that was pretty much my only goal left. If I want to use the old characters, I'd rather just play XIII. (I would have instantly bought DLC for XIII-2 Hope, though. Shame they didn't make it.)

Agreed; that was definitely the main problem with the story, next to the not having much screentime for old characters. Maybe I should forgive Noel for his occasional arrogance, since I'm sure all that time alone would make anyone a little egocentric. I like the colors in his costume even though I have no idea how he runs in those pants. (I played Serah exclusively in the postgame; I know she's a tad bland, but I liked how the dialogue options gave her a bit more character, and I like her sisterly relationship with Lightning.) I hope that they expand more on the characters and backstories in Lightning Returns, although I'm not really expecting a whole lot from the story. I just want there to finally be a happy ending and for all the characters to get together again. (Alyssa's backstory actually got explained in the collector's edition game manual, which made her seem a lot more interesting, and it really should have been in the game somewhere. Quote: Alyssa actually died during the Purge that occurred at the beginning of Final Fantasy XIII. Her “survival” is due only to the course of history having been altered when Etro decided to save those who fought to defend Cocoon. She can only exist in this warped timeline, her very existence being a paradox of sorts. As Serah and Noel solve all the inconsistencies that alter the true course of events, Alyssa feels increasingly threatened. She is aware that the restoration of the timeline will lead to her demise. She eventually chooses to favor her own survival, by accepting Caius’s offer even when this means betraying her friends.)

Zaziki7 In reply to aquanut [2012-11-07 21:05:57 +0000 UTC]

Oh yes, it is!
I understand, this was the reason why I bought these DLCs so late. I thought about it and what a waste of money this would be... but my lost in the end.
I have the same "problem" and congrats on platinum! Did you get it in XIII, too? Because I didn't until now, and it's much harder to get in my opinion. T___T
Haha, good solution! ;D
Ah, agreed! I'm so sad that they didn't make it, the concept sounded so exciting and interesting... ;__;

Vanille is your favorite character, and when I think about her screentime in XIII-2... you must hate this game.
Haha, I always thought how he can be a professional hunter? With SUCCESS??
Her sisterly relationship is the only thing I like about her... a bit. I have a sister myself, and our bond is so tight, we both are always touched when there's a story with sisters. Well, you should finish watching "Requiem of the Goddess". At the end, I remebered again why I hate Serah so much... maybe that's only my weird way of thinking, but in my opinion she simply doesn't get how MUCH she means to Lightning and nearly destroys her with her "death". How can she say that she "regret[s] nothing" and wants Lightning to always remember her? Does she think she would ever forget her (look at what Lightning did just because of her in XIII!)? And now, because she is "dead" and can't "help" her anymore (like Serah did anything useful... sorry, I know that's a bit harsh, but I simply think she is rather useless and Noel has to do the real stuff. I mean, look at XIII. What did SHE DO except for being a crystal and driving Lightning and Snow crazy. Actually, she caused the whole Purge. And in XIII-2, when this "creature system" is introduced, she says that she wants to become stronger like her sister... through enslaving various creatures and let them fight her battles?? UGH. -__- ), Lightning shall stay strong and continue her lone battle. In my opinion, Serah is simply self-centered in the end, no matter how much she wants to "help" others. Ehm, sorry for this long rant. I don't know why I am telling you all this...
True, unfortunately it's not very likely that they'll expand more on the characters etc., and I'm afraid that they'll kind of "abuse" Lightning with these new outfits and possibilities of customisation for the male audience, if you know what I mean. >__<
Wow, thank you so much for telling me this and I absolutely agree! To be honest, that's exactly what I've suspected after her weird dream about that grave and her betrayal. Heh, I can't believe they left that out. Geez... -___-
But really, thank you SO MUCH for talking with me about that! It's just too interesting and funny!

And I'm sure there are some English mistakes in my reply again, sorry for that.

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2013-01-07 05:42:44 +0000 UTC]

Correction: she could have avoided dying, but that would have meant leaving the future the way it was, and it was important to her that she try to change it for the better. So it could be argued that she was being unselfish by making a sacrifice for the sake of the larger body of people in the world, even if it hurt those close to her. Of course things didn't turn out the way anyone hoped, but I think she believed she was doing it for the greater good.

Now the question is whether she'll be resurrected in Lightning Returns. I hope she is, for Lightning's and Snow's sakes. If Yeul and Caius survived, it seems like it'd be pretty easy for them to make an excuse to bring Serah back too.

Well, I admit it, I have no choice than to agree with you on that point.

I - and yes, you are reading right - hope so, too.
But as you said, JUST for Lightning's and Snow's sake, maybe even for Hope's and Noel's. I agree again, and I'm rather positive that Serah will come back, if I want that or not.

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2013-01-25 15:28:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well, I'm glad. xD But I wonder what they're going to do about the awkward Snow/Noel/Serah love triangle if she comes back; considering how they kept implying Snow/Serah and Noel/Yeul were canon, it really seemed like they were trying to provide support for Noel/Serah and Caius/Yeul. I felt bad for Snow because of how it seemed like Noel and Serah were developing a relationship that he couldn't do anything about while he was away.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zaziki7 In reply to aquanut [2013-01-26 21:02:23 +0000 UTC]

Well, of course there was space for a love triangle, but my impression was that Serah is a dear friend to Noel, nothing more. In the end, he always thought about Yeul and Caius, although Serah means a lot to him (which I don't understand at all ). Even Snow seemed to be rather reserved about Serah and him getting married, either because he started to have taste (haha, sorry!) or because he knows that his new L'Cie stigma will cause more problems and doesn't want Serah to worry.
But really now, how STUPID can he be?? Lightning only disappeared and this whole mess started because Etro was so kind to break their "curse", and what does he do?? "Hey, I need a new one!"
And this relationship between Noel and Serah... Snow didn't really mind, did he? Officially, he isn't the jealous type, and I think that he is rather glad that there is someone who can protect his Serah (ugh >__<) while he can't.
I don't know how much you know about Lightning Returns and I hope I won't spoiler you now, but I also think that Noel, now being known as the "Shadow Hunter", has other problems than his feelings for Serah and his attitude towards Snow. And we don't even know anything about Snow's role and situation in this game. Well well, we have to wait and see...

By the way, I just want to thank you for your other long and interesting replies and want to let you know that I will definitely answer to them! I currently don't have much time and since it takes an etenity for me to answer properly to you (so NO NEED to apologize to me for being slow, I'm much worse!), I'm afraid this won't happen right now.
I'll try to do it soon, but I can't promise anything... but well, I wish you wonderful day and until then!

aquanut In reply to Zaziki7 [2013-01-07 05:24:13 +0000 UTC]

I'm sorry it took me so long to reply to this. It made me reevaluate Serah's character, and I felt like I couldn't respond until I had more of an idea of what I wanted to say, although I still don't feel like I've thought about it enough to give a proper analysis. Don’t worry about rambling; it’s always great to get others’ perspectives on game characters.

Yes, I got platinum in XIII—I didn't stop playing it until I did, haha. I found it strangely addictive in spite of the repetitive gameplay, and was pretty much obsessive-compulsive about playing it for a month after I got it. It took me around 90 hours to get platinum, although I think I farmed more ingots than I actually needed because I wanted to be sure I could afford to upgrade everything. I agree that getting platinum in XIII is harder, but XIII-2 has a few really frustrating or silly trophies like the slot machine one that can mess things up depending on your luck.

Haha, I admit I was disappointed with how little screentime Vanille had in XIII-2 (although it made me happy that she appeared at all). I really hope she and Fang get freed sometime midway in Lightning Returns instead of just appearing briefly in the ending, but I don't know how likely that is. I can't hate XIII-2 though, because it was beautiful and improved on the original's gameplay, and I like Hope enough to make up for Vanille's absence.

I think Serah means well, but is very naïve in a lot of ways, and I find it hard to completely dislike her for her lack of awareness about the world and her sister's feelings when it seems she's still too immature to appreciate the depth of some things. She couldn't exactly prevent her death, and I hesitate to judge her for not being sensitive enough to her sister in her dying words. But I do think Serah showed foolishness in XIII when she went wandering around restricted areas and came home suddenly telling Lightning she wanted to marry this strange guy with a questionable future; I understand why Lightning was angry with her over that. I always saw Serah as being the wayward child in desperate need of protection, who doesn't know enough about the world for her own good, the kind that you desperately hope will eventually mature and get better at taking care of herself. I liked the fact that in XIII-2 she had a job as a teacher and seemed to have grown up a bit and was willing to accept responsibilities like changing the future for the better, and I thought her dedication to finding Lightning showed she did care about her sister, even if she didn’t fully appreciate everything Lightning was doing for her (not that anyone really knew what Lightning was doing in Valhalla at all). I’m not going to argue that Serah was a particularly well-written character; I think she’s a pretty bland protagonist, and might as well have been an object in the first game. But I never thought of her as being intentionally selfish, just naïve, and the fact that she has the desire to be helpful and to grow makes it hard for me to hate her. I actually don’t think battling much suits her to begin with, but there are other ways to be strong besides physical prowess, whether monsters are involved or not. Overall I think her heart’s in the right place and she’s more of an optimist than Noel, which made me like her more than him, because his pessimism about humanity bothered me.

You’re completely entitled to continue hating her for the reasons you’ve given, but that’s my take on her. Possibly a lot of it just comes from the fact that I want to like at least one of the characters I have to play as in XIII-2. Sorry, Noel just rubbed me the wrong way—for some reason I prefer Snow’s over-the-top arrogance because he acts like such a big goofy kid about it, while Noel is more passive and brooding.

I really hope they don’t do anything with Lightning like they did with the Serah swimsuit DLC; that would be completely contrary to character (and I already thought Serah’s revealing clothing went against her quiet and unassuming personality). So far her outfit looks pretty cool and Assassin’s Creed-ish, though. Fingers crossed.

The thing with Alyssa at the grave confused me because it seemed interesting when it happened, but it was never mentioned again, and I practically forgot about it until I read that bit in the manual. They definitely should have explained it in the story.

Your English seems fine to me, don’t worry! If you’re ever uncertain, though, you can write in German—I can read it decently (and I can always look up anything I’m not sure about); I’m just not that good at writing in it myself.

Oh no, please don't be sorry for anything! I can't believe that you really took so much time to write such a detailed and extremely interesting reply for my rather childish rant about Serah and even added a little correction. Thank you so much for that.

Wow... I'm really looking up to you, this upgrading takes an eternity. OTL
And I agree on XIII-2, some of these trophies were just silly and really frustrating, including the one you mentioned or another one for which you have to hit 100 enemies in a row before battle without a single mistake. Ugh, the memories... -___-'

Yes, Fang and Vanille just HAVE to get a bigger role than in XIII-2 again, but we will see... unfortunately, I also doubt that. :/
Well, Hope was a big plus indeed.

To be honest, I am a bit ashamed now after reading this and using such a strong word like "hate". To "hate" a fictional character isn't a proof for my maturity either (I should have written "dislike" ), and I understand your point. She is rather naïve than selfish indeed, but just TOO naïve for my taste. -__-
Like you said, in XIII she showed foolishness (with everything she did if you ask me), and this resulted in me disliking her so much that I already had a really bad opinion about her in XIII-2 although I just started playing this game...
I see that I'm obviously not really fair here, but she kind of represents this kind of young girls which are simply "cute" and "sweet" and cause a lot of trouble, but nobody can be really angry at them because they are so "pure-hearted" and "innocent" and everyone wants to protect them. "Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't want that to happen..."
And sorry, I just can't stop ranting about her although you showed me another and very interesting perspective.
Really, thank you so much for that! I'm kind of flattered that you took your time to write all of this for me as I already mentioned at the beginning.
As you can imagine, while my sister played as Serah, I always chose Noel.
He is rather positive in my opinion since he wanted to change the future and was strong enough to seriously try it despite his awful situation in the Dying World. I'm sure most people just were broken and would give up in his place. Even his theme shows his determination(if that is a real argument ):

Long ago, when I was just a boy
So alone that last of my kind in the world
I believe futures could be reborn
I would go back in time
Change what’s to come

Hunting, searching for futures I’ve dreamed
Ever chasing, believing visions unseen
Hearing that hope is futile
Only inspires me not to give up

Valhalla is calling me to the end
I can hear now the beating hearts of lost friends
Urging me to not forget them
As the last hunter
I’ll find the key

And I also can understand his pessimism about humanity which is surely inspired by what he had to see and experience his whole life. He has a feeling for the value of life, and that's a reason why he is so angry about Snow's way of acting, which doesn't mean to me that he is pessimistic in general, just rather careful.
Well, I really like both "boys", but I think you'll be more secure with Noel.
Thank you for saying that I'm "entitled to continue hating her", but "hate" is really to strong. Sorry for my imprudent choice of words. x'D

Gosh, it is so fun to write and kind of argue about that with you! Thanks again!

Lightning's new outfit has interesting elements, but why is there so much skin again? This black part on her body looks like a swimsuit and shows too much of her back and her legs. Not very smart for dangerous battles. :/

Yeah, me too! This was the moment where I speculated that her existence or rather survival may be a paradox. I forgot about that, too, but meeting her again with Hope in Academia and after receiving the manipulated artifact from her reminded me of that and made me wonder again.
And then you told me about the manual and even wrote everything down for me. Thank you very much again!

Why thank you and don't be so kind.
Wow, now I'm surprised! Hast du Deutsch in der Schule gelernt?

And sorry for this uber long reply, I really don't want to bother you.
