cute and dead?
You've just got to humour me for a moment here, while I try to explain the way my mind works and what it did to this picture after I noticed him there; when I first saw this I thought, sleepy/eyes closed peaceful mermaid, wrapped up in pearls, bubbles, shapes, colours, nice! ^-^ ... then the moment I saw the dead fish the whole thing changed for me.. due to my work with Friends of the Earth and our recent anti-plastic campaigns the string of pearls turned into some kind of plastic/beaded net type thing, and mermaid lady was no longer just swimming, but struggling to get free... and not only sleeping but dying! Specially with the red and black and the fact that she's kinda sinking as much as swimming... isnt' it crazy how one teensy little detail can change your perception of a whole pic? o.O

yeah... I just seem to like drawing skulls lately, lol!
You are just weird.
*cough*
I dont know what it is, I'm not a particularly morbid person, I dont think there was anything more behind the dead fish than 'it looks cooler than a living fish' but its weird how little stuff throws up different symbolism in different people.
In a weird sort of way, death isnt this massively taboo thing in our house, my mother is a cemetery registrar so she buries people for a living, she is always telling us cool things about the cemeteries and the stories behind different headstones and what people who were buried there did when they were alive, and some of it is fascinating.
We just had a new doorstep out the front of the house and the stone mason from my mothers work did it for us, so Im sure its part of a headstone rather than just a random piece of granite, which would be so cool!
I think that *if* it symbolises anything to me it is more about history and stories and the fact that theres so much you dont know or think about but that it all makes up part of the here and now. I liked that he is dead but looks like he is still swimming.
As for the mermaid, I dont think shes dead or dying, just a bit of a diva, lol!
wow...this was a long and random post.

lol! interesting though! I think your mum has a cool job! hehehe
I don't think Death is that taboo in our house either... we're all pretty easy-goin' artist types.. and I for one don't see death as any big deal in itself, but it's funny, it was the idea of the plastic stragling which caused more of a problem for me.. - someone dying naturally is fine but someone suffering through the actions of others is no good! ... still, it's still an awesome picture, I just have to accept that my mind is wired funny and puts meanings where there aren't any intended!
Your new door step surely wouldn't be part of a a headstone would it? .. I didn't think it was legal to disturb them or something? .. or is it the stones you can move but the graves you're not meant to? .. I don't know, your mum would probably know! ^-^
yay for random night-time conversations about death!

It's illegal to move damage or remove them, but I thought that it could be part of one that hadnt been used from the stone mason's workshop, perhaps one that was damaged and never sold or something, but not one from an actual grave, that would be very illegal!
Im actually glad that it made someone think about something other than 'wft is that supposed to be...' so yay!

eee, yeah, that makes more sense.
Some would say that's what art's supposed to be about of course, starting conversation and making people think!
I find so many comments on DeviantArt are quick/throw-away/superficial comments.. did you used to find that on elfwood people would put more time and thought into what they wrote? (apart from anonymous trolls of course!) lol

some of them did, but I really wasnt very good at all back when I was on elfwood and at that stage where criticism, even helpful criticism very easily put me off. A lot of comments here are really superficial, but then I'm guilty of that too, and of faving lots without commenting, but I think there is so much on DA that gets your attention that you could spend all day writing in deapth comments and if someone has really low confidence someitimes it can do more harm than good.
looking back, you've always made really helpful and some really nice comments on some of the complete shit I've posted in the past. Perhaps its best to have just a few in deapth comments and helpful critique with loads of 'yay this is gud' comments thrown in so people dont take it so personally when someone offers a critique or a more in deapth view of their work.

I actually find most people on DA are really bad at accepting (even helpful) crit-type comments.. - I'm always careful/constructive in what I write and yet most people on here can't handle it when someone says anything other than "this is cool!" .. it really puts me off writing at all some of the time, recently I've also resorted to the quick comment approach -_- .. like you say though, there's so much more stuff to look at here than there ever was on EW.
Still, I'm glad that my comments might have been helpful in the past \:]
You still didn't send me a link to your gallery btw
