Description Did this for Digital Illustration.

Genesis 10:8-12, 11:1-9
Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; that is why it is said, "Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter before the LORD." The first centers of his kingdom were Babylon, Erech, Akkad and Calneh, in Shinar. From that land he went to Assyria, where he built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah and Resen, which is between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city.

-----

Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."

So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel — because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

>_> I never understood why he'd do something as unhelpful as that.

I mean, if he was afraid they'd reach him couldn't he just shunt heaven to the side or make a pocket universe for it to expand into or soemthing?

Well, I don't think there was ever any possibility of humanity actually reaching heaven.

It's the principle of the thing, I think. God has something he's always wanted for mankind to do, and they all banded together to do just the opposite.

heh

well that's their right, no?

what did he want mankind to do, anyway? go to hell?

Uh, no, he wants them to go to heaven. Thing is, we can't get their by ourselves, and that's just what people were trying to do there - in a literal sense. It's kind of like refusing to accept a birthday present, and demanding to pay for it. It just doesn't work like that.

well, maybe.

but like I said, he could have just made the struggle futile by I don't know, moving earth slightly to the left or something.

Instead he gave us different languages, which inadvertantly sparked xenophobia on a much larger scale than was necessary.

...and he did render the whole struggle futile - by confusing their languages!

it's funny, because moving the earth even slightly would kill us all by freezing or burning, as the case may be.

just thought I'd make that clear: he did exactly what you think is fair to do. :3

XD well, yeah but he's god! he could make the sun brighter or dimmer by however much would be necessary! he can do that, being omnipotent and all.

I dunno, I think we would've figured that out ourselves. Just look at the internet - people who speak the same language have no problem hating each other. I don't think there's a "necessary" level of xenophobia.

no, I guess necessary wasn't the right word. but a far higher level than it might have been at.

Yeah, I getcha, though. I've wondered myself why things have gone the way they have - and just how much of human history is synonymous with base human behavior.

true...

but then, without religion it'd be all on our shoulders to take responsibibility for everything we do, so I can understand why people have it. it's a base thing to not want responsibility too.

I agree, with photoshop you can gain better detail with some of the tools and filters it carries. This is nice as it is though, love to over the horizon feel it gives. Heck it's good as is. But yeah the full version may look even better. and props for the bible!

What parts did you do in illustrator? Just the color?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArcZero In reply to ZaxZero [2009-04-27 20:21:59 +0000 UTC]

The color, and the "textures" - the marker effects in the sky, and the paper effects on the foreground. Used up way more resources than it needed to. Photoshop is so much nicer for this.
