Description This is something I may revisit later, mostly because I'm still learning about human anatomy. This is meant to be used in part or whole.
I'm sure there are plenty of errors here, and I'll fix them later.
-edit- Now includes multi-wings and wing arm.

The arm as wing image makes me think of pterosaurs!

Yeah, they are pretty similar

I draw mermaids as the "true mammal" type, as being like a dolphine.

I know this is an older tutorial, but I would like to point out that in a women, curves do not equal fat. It normally means a small waist and belly, but larger hips.

I was most referring to breasts, which tend to be oversized to the extreme in most comics, but I understand what you mean.

I love this tutorial...when I first drew my merfolk, they were something like the disney-style until my best friend pointed out that as merfolk their lower body was that of a fish and therefore would not have navels.

Since then, my merfolk have shifted more toward true fish and less to true mammal, as you have so kindly explained it, but they are a strange...mix. Females still possess breasts, but they are vestigal and usually small. Males are never very muscular unless the fish their tail is referenced from is a bulky fish. Most tend to be about as muscular as an Olympic swimmer. However, they possess gills and have no need to surface unless their tail is mammalian, in which the entire merperson is true mammal.

As for the wings, if I must draw a winged human...I typically modify the scapula, lengthening it to support the wings rather than adding a second one. The wing itself extends out from about where the base of a normal scapula would end. Also, there is a modification to the way I draw my wings though it isn't large. There is an added joint, allowing the wing to extend out from the body and then continue on as a normal wing. I began to realize as I took Anatomy that a bird or bat wing 'super-glued' to a human was not physically possible considering they'd beat themselves senseless every time they flew. By adding the third joint, it brought the wing out away from the body, and kept the person from knocking themselves out. The first joint is similar to that of our elbow, and only moves up and down. It is also modified on one end to be a ball-and-socket joint to allow for the wing to be flexible and to support the natural structure of a wing. This joint and added bone, along with the muscles is no different than our upper arm and serves only to bring the wing away from the body. Also, the pectorals are modified to support the added weight and stress of the wings.

Thanks for the imformative tutorial...It is really great to see a logical approach rather than just "this is how you draw this"...especially for someone who learns more from reference than step-by-step

I am not criticizing your way, as I mentioned I love this tutorial, only seeing if you would agree with my approach.

Well, I'm glad you liked it! Your mermaid method is fine, my notes here were mostly for making them biologically sound. For your wings however, a third moving joint won't really work. A bone spur extension of the second shoulder blade however, will work a little better. I can't even begin to imagine how a bird with an extra wing joint would fly. Just remember it still needs driving muscles and connective tissue!

AngelicMisery In reply to arourallis [2011-08-15 14:46:21 +0000 UTC]

Once the creature with the third joint lifts off, it locks, much like you can do with your knee or elbow...While flying it doesn't move. I'll see if I can't get a picture up of one of my flyers....I'm not too fond of drawing flying humans

arourallis In reply to AngelicMisery [2011-08-15 17:12:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it locks anyway, I think it's a little more energy efficient to have just a solid bone. Eh, it's all theory anyway, I try not to think too hard about it XD

Would a digitgrade humanoid be quieter when walking? I'm making a vampire thingie (not afraid of wood at 90* angles, water, or sunlight) that needs to be extremely stealthy.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arourallis In reply to WormandaDuck [2010-06-20 14:30:26 +0000 UTC]

Most likely. If you have a cat, notice how quiet it is on a hard floor. As long as your character's claws(if any) aren't long enough to click on the floor, then they should be much quieter, having only half as much foot area as a human.

Just curious, what advantages and weaknesses are there for being digitgrade or unguligrade?
Thanks in advance!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arourallis In reply to WormandaDuck [2010-06-12 20:45:35 +0000 UTC]

Well, in theory you might run faster, jump higher, ect., but in conjunction with a winged character, digitgrade limbs would act like a shock absorber when landing because the landing speed may be considerably higher. That's as far as my reasoning goes
Unguligrade is a familiar term, but I don't remember the meaning. That is the term for hoofed mammals correct? I think elephants, hippos and rhinos are in that group as well.

It's most impressive how you looked thru all the things like balance and anatomy features.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arourallis In reply to Daandric [2010-05-04 20:10:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, when you have 20 characters that have these features, you tend to think a lot about how it would work. I tend to think from a very technical point of view.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daandric In reply to arourallis [2010-05-04 20:36:38 +0000 UTC]

That approach is what I like too, oh and It just came to my mind some stuff I seen and they are:
1)wings attached to wrists or ancles

2)double or triple pair of wings ( something I did/like )

so if you have time or will can you figure out that too? I'm don't do humanoids or angels frequently but it would come useful from time to time or later if i do commissions and such.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

arourallis In reply to Daandric [2010-05-04 20:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Sure! It's pretty easy to add stuff in, I'll see what I can do!
Now, I've seen ankle wings plenty of times, but never on the wrists. that will be strange.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daandric In reply to arourallis [2010-05-04 23:24:58 +0000 UTC]

Well if I'm correct, ancle and wrist are pretty much the same they are just changed in shape thru evolution in order to fit the right function so figuring one out would probably help with the other.

arourallis In reply to Daandric [2010-05-05 01:00:26 +0000 UTC]

True, true. I've actually got a rough idea for the wrist, but ankle wings are still giving me some trouble.
