I absolutely adore this pose! It's nice to see a cute clumsy little fellow coming out of the egg, so many artists render them as already lythe and regal no really, what baby is lithe and regal!

You really captured the hatchling "awkward-ness". Poor little mite doesnt know how to use his paws yet

NICE. I really like the alien-ness of her design.
My only beef is that gold dragons pop out of gold eggs, but the blue is a nice balance for what might otherwise be sort of a yellow-happy piece. Beautiful work!

Thanks, glad you liked it. On Pern they couldn't tell what kind of dragon would come out of an egg, except the gold queens tended to come out of larger eggs, if I remember rightly. ??

Golds are the only dragons whose eggs are recognizable -- they themselves are gold. It's always a big deal when a queen lays a gold egg, and she sets it apart from the rest of the eggs to give it extra care and protection.
It's still an awesome painting!

In the Dragons of Pern series? I couldn't remember, but thought I remembered one book wherein they were thinking that one egg was a queen but wasn't sure.....

You're talking to the director of the Weyrfest track at Dragon*Con. I promise, I've been reading these books for a really, really long time. ;> Gold dragons definitely pop out of gold eggs! I'd be happy to cite passages if you want, but that seems like a little bit of a dick move.
Now gold FIRELIZARD eggs are indistinguishable from others in a clutch. Maybe you're thinking of that?

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to Cavatica [2009-12-07 15:07:30 +0000 UTC]
Hi director I might be thinking of firelizards or of the fact that they couldn't tell the others apart.
I might also be thinking of one of her earliest scenes with eggs in which she hadn't defined her thoughts as closely. I truly thought I remembered a section wherein they 'thought' this one might be a gold, but couldn't be sure. I also remeber a scene where the girl candidates were 'in a circle around the gold egg'. So my memory is definitely full of holes. I haven't read the books in years, but would like to reread them one of these days. I suspect I just remembered the gold wrong. I do remember that when I did the drawing I was thinking that I needed some different colors in there. I suppose if I wanted to make it authentic and make the shell gold I would have to come up with a violet shadow section, maybe some flag that blew down or something to add some color variation.
Did you notice in my dragons they don't have faceted eyes and giraffe like knobs either?

I did notice the bit about the eyes and headknobs, but honestly -- like the egg thing -- the technical aspects of your work is so good, it really doesn't bother me! You've nailed the spirit of Pern, and that's what matters. :>

It was the spirit of the bond between human and dragon and the warm skin not scale idea that appealed to me, so I came up with my own dragon.

I was struck immediately at how lovely the anatomy of the legs is. Really good work here--there is both funny baby clumsiness to the dragon and a hint of grace to come. ^_^

YouΒ΄ll find me strange for comparing such, but... oh well: my cat had kittens( the day after yesterday, VERY early at morning, and, guess who has to take care? Me, of course ), so the posture of this little thing( though heΒ΄s a DRAGON, for PeteΒ΄s sake XD ), still trying to get up, just hatched...
itΒ΄s so well caught on your artwork!
I really admire the ability anf the talent to catch those things

LOL, well, not really. Babies have big heads and small necks. Any 4 legged critter that can crawl at birth has trouble keeping that round little noggin up, straightening out those floppy little legs and not falling over. The idea for it came from one of the hatching stories in the Dragons of Pern series, but my own experience with baby kittens and puppies is really what I drew on.
I'm glad you liked it. Thanks so much.

Yes, I can see that it's nearly 4 years since you submitted this but I've only been here 6 weeks!
I'm a big, big fan of the Pern series so have to favourite this. You've captured exactly how I imagined a hatchling queen to look - thank you - it's being added to my favourites and wishlist.
