What does ambient occlusion do? Is it a seperate layer? I tried looking it up, but all the results I’m getting are in reference to game rendering

Yep! That's actually what it's supposed to simulate

Ambient occlusion is just a fancy term for shadow mapping. I usually keep it on its own multiply layer and use it to define form and 3D shapes. I hope this helped!<3
