Media: Colored pencil, mechanical pencil, pen, markers on white bristol drawing paper
Time: about 10-15 hours
Size: 11x14

This is the first colored pencil/drawing that ive done in a few years. I did this piece as a practice run through to get myself back into the swing of drawing using color, pencils, etc. This is a free flowing piece as you can see

Can you find the five senses?

***UPDATE*** 08/10/2005

Thank you for taking a look at this piece, I am extremely grateful for the honor of having a Daily Deviation/Print of the day!

I have submitted 2 other pieces using this drawing. For "fifth dimension" click this [link] and for "Retrograde" (also featured as a DD 12/04) click this [link]

My Mum has been sitting over at the computer just staring at this picture. She absolutely ADORES it! And she's seriously considering buying a print! So, a job well done! ^^ Oh and she found all of the 5 senses! The eyes, the nose up at the top, the ear down at the bottom, the mouth, and the yellowish hand with pink fingernails^^

Anyway, a fabulous picture and congrats on the Daily Deviation! ^^

Thank you so much! Tell your mom that whether or not she buys the print, I truly appreciate her love for my work & GOOD job on finding the 5 senses!

Sight: All the eyes represent this sense, but there's an eye in the upper right that's attached to all the nerves that go back into the ocipital lobe...>,< I am a biology nerd, heh heh. Anyways, that eye and the attachments is the best representative of sight. I find it amusing that there are five senses in your picture, and there are five eyes. It's also interesting that you what looks like more nerves and even a spine in there.

Sound: In the bottom right, there's an ear, which represents hearing. It's a right ear...

Smell: There's a nose near the top of the picture, upside down.

Taste: I see a pair of red lips in the middle of the picture, partly opened, so that represents taste, unless there's a tongue in their somewhere.

Touch: In between the red lips and the right ear, there's an open hand, representing touch.

I like the way it's all blended together. Nice! I'm not sure whether anyone else did this (they didn't in the first 25 comments), and I was too lazy to check the others, so if I'm repeating what everyone already knows, I'm sorry. >.<

Thank you for your in depth comment on this piece. I really like how you took it apart and laid out the senses piece by piece. And no, not everybody could find them, so far you're ahead of the game!

Whats funny is that the spine, nerves and what others call a heart, lungs and intestines was just free hand drawing, unintentional and just shapes that came out from the coloured pencils that just happen to look like the insides of a body.

Thank you for playing

It's not often that I follow links to a deviation that has obviously recieved a lot of attention already, and it's even rarer that I leave any sort of comment, but for some reason this one time I will. You have obviously placed a level of planning and structure into this that seems to be very rare and the vibrant colours and overall shape of the image are beautiful. You deserve the praise you're getting.

Thanks for creating something that actually held my eyes for more than the usual few seconds I devote to most images.

You're welcome. I don't often feel that people with several hundred favourites to their name deserve them so I save my comments for the less recognised here, but in this case, you deserve all you've had.

Thank you very much for the comment. I feel honored and appreciate it, especially since you comment on a rare occasion! This was actually my first attempt at drawing freestyle, without the use of any help from photos, drawings, objects, etc. and spawned a whole new style of drawing for me. Happy that it was able to capture your attention for the time that it did. peace & love

artisticalshell In reply to nightsgirl [2005-08-11 05:06:09 +0000 UTC]

I used to draw strictly from using a source such as an object, photo, person, etc. This was my first attempt at drawing from my mind. I had always feared I would have no skill without a reference, but I was wrong. I just let the music blast in the background and my mind get lost in the paper & pencil. Try it - without judgement, and you'll be surprized with the results. I was!

Thank you for the comment & the fav

You know, I'm not really too big on abstract art these days. I'm kinda tired of the genre being praised by art critics and fellow participants of the movement because most of the time it's extremely incoherent and simply looks like a blob on an expensive sheet of paper. However, this was able to really catch me eye. Perhaps it's been my excessive delving into the world of psychedelic music these days (especially thanks to Porcupine Tree), or maybe it's simply because this is unlike the other abstract drab of today. You've presented things in an appealing manner: the vibrant colors are obviously the initial catch of the eye, the recognizable objects mingling with rather skewed objects is quite sensational (heh I didn't mean for that to slip), the nerves radiating from certain objects give a feeling of reality, and the meshing of border and artwork proves that nothing needs to stay within the boundaries; and with this sort of artwork usually means something much more than the literal presentation.

You've got quite a marvelous work here, I would hold on to it. For once I actually agree with the gallery directors and claim this worthy of a Daily Deviation. Great work.

Thank you very much for your comment, I will take your advice and hold on to this piece. It is very special to me since it is the drawing that introduced me to this style of art. Before this, I drew strictly from photo/object references. Now I just allow my mind to do the referencing & as far as choosing colors, I kind of just grab any color and start drawing

Once again thank you for your in depth and kind comments, they are most appreciated!
