So - killing off much loved chars is what a dying patient needs huh? Yeah - my mom and two of my best friends (one passed away, the other two survived) would have slapped the HELL out of me for pulling that ("Kage - Kage - I need to whisper something to you..." slap! "What the hell was THAT for?" "You being an asshole. Knock it off.").
No offence but - the Specs is a selfish beast.

Perhaps, but what do you expect when one is sinking into despair? Specs's little brother is getting worse, possibly dying. The whole reason the story started was for him, but the little brother is slowly giving up and no longer cares to fight for his own life. He even gave hint that he saw nothing to look forward to when it came to his life.
It takes a pretty amazing person to be able to continue to write fun, engaging, dramatic, adventurous stories that still have hope when the world around the author is crashing down and the very reason for the stories is teetering on living and dying.
Despair tends to cause a lot of things and one of those things is selfishness.
Try to create something that is hopeful when you are at your worst, feeling depressed and helpless. It will likely come out dark, melancholic, full of angst and hopeless. If there is anything living in it, you will probably be keen to kill it by the end. If not that, you find you cannot even continue creating and it becomes an unfinished work.

Having worked with the dying for several years and having lived with it on my own often enough, I wont' debate that living through it is hard. Loss is a painful thing.Β I've seen many different reactions and some even worse than Specs there. I've cared for their survivors as well - picked up the pieces.Β I did it - and many others do it - by creating something hopeful and beautiful and yes, they completed them.Β And so did I my own. I'm not saying I don't understand how Specs feels here and I'm not saying they aren't entitled to feeling the way they do.Β Β I simply made the statement that they are being selfish.

Yeah, CoatNTails basically nailed it when it comes down to what I was coming from. The gears behind my post was, "Specs is selfish, but the actions are very human." Then as noted, I find those who can be seemingly unbreakable pillars, can create things that don't get tainted by the negative to be pretty amazing people. Thus, yes, Specs is selfish here... but as CoatNTails elaborated, I don't think it is to the point of being a selfish beast - just that of a weak, helpless, hurt human.

And humans can be very beastly entities - and that's being gentle. I won't retract my statement given the context (that it seems as if Story has taken them over and together they just nuked this ill kid's fandom) because that is how I feel about it.Β However, in the context that the character is simply responding in a human fashion, I doubt I'd even call him that. I'd probably do what I always did - take them for counselling (if they were willing) and buy them an ice cream.

Oh bother, this did that thing. That was not in reply to your comment, but in response to author doing that in the first place. I find myself wanting to knock some sense into author myself.
