Description
Okay, so as anyone who's visited my Profile knows, I joined the #TailsxNicole fan club (sorry, I don't know how to put avatars in the descriptions) a few months back, and one of the ways I wanted to celebrate was to do a picture for them. So I went about the internet, looking up Tails and Nicole fanart and seeing if I could get inspired. Then I realized something was missing. Do you realize that pretty much every coupling for Sonic and his friends tends to result in a child or two.So I began to wonder, "Why not for Tails and Nicole, should they ever intend to get together?" Of course I'm not blind to the inherent problems of them having a child (him being a flesh and blood fox, her being an ethereal cyber-entity), so I began to consider what might need to happen for a junior to be born.
I actually came up with four pictures for this, as well as the rudimentary story detailing how it would happen. I'd wanted to, with each of the uncolored pictures, put in a small blurb of what I intended each successive chapter of the story to look like, but sadly this was not to be as I moved and lost track of time. But I still managed to do a blurb for two of the pictures.
*************************************************
Nicole wrung her hands, her face a mask of worry as her eyes locked on the scene before her. Tails sat in a heavy, iron chair, his arms and legs strapped down. Another strap ran across his chest, holding him against the chair’s back, preventing him from squirming about unnecessarily. The fox’s head was currently enclosed in a glass cylinder, itself attached to a metal dome protruding from the top of the chair. Inside the cylinder a ring of blue energy slowly moved up and down Tails’s head, a soft crackling sound signaling its progress.
And that was the reason Nicole was worried now. She did not trust this machine. If it hadn’t been so important to their plans, the cybernetic lynx would have used her nannites to break the whole thing down for bits, especially given who its creator was. But important it was, vital in fact, and so there she stood, worrying as her best friend, her boyfriend, sat in a machine made by Dr. Robotnik himself and allowed his brain to be scanned and digitized.
‘If so much as a whisker falls off Tails, I won’t stop until that blasted machine is a pile of iron sludge,’ she thought to herself.
In the back of her mind, Nicole knew she was working herself into an electronic frazzle for nothing. This was not the first time Tails had strapped himself into Robotnik’s brain scanner. Indeed, this was the fourth time, and it had not yet caused him any permanent harm. There was no reason for her to worry for the fox’s safety. Any ordinary computer worth its salt would have simply left the machine to perform its work, content in the knowledge that nothing would go wrong.
But that didn’t mean nothing could go wrong. And that was the knowledge that preyed on her mind now. As she watched the youthful face of the fox she loved wince in discomfort, she couldn’t help but think of all the ways this little experiment could go wrong. How if the scanners suddenly slipped, the ring of electricity would arc wildly out of control, most likely jumping directly through Tails’s head and most likely frying his brain. How if the biofeedback inhibitors failed, the scanners could wipe the fox’s neural pathways, effectively wiping out his very mind.
Oh how many ways this whole project could go wrong.
But it had to be done.
Trying to draw her mind off the potential failures that could occur, Nicole turned to stare at the computer monitor next to the mind scanner. There a digital representation of Tails’s head was displayed from all angles, gradually solidifying as the scanner did its work, displaying the progress it was making. It would still be a few more minutes before the scan was complete. Then they would have what they needed, a complete digital copy of Tails’s neural pathways, the sum total of his personality, memories, habits, everything that made the fox who he was.
Robotnik had tried a similar tactic on Sally, hence the reason for this machine’s existence. He’d managed to create a near perfect robotic clone of the Princess, one that had been so perfect it had nearly lead to the destruction of the Freedom Fighters, of Knothole itself. But, perfect as the clone had been, it had still managed to be a flawed copy, and thus it had failed in its mission.
Robotnik had failed.
But he had gotten close. Close enough that, when Nicole had managed to located the stored scanner, Tails had spent a full week trying to figure out what had gone wrong. In the end, he’d determined the problem was a matter of depth. Robotnik’s device had been designed to work fast, making a quick copy the former dictator could dump into his robotic spy. Unfortunately, or rather fortunately considering the intent of the machine, the single scan had not been enough to capture all of the necessary data that made up Sally’s mind. Hence why the robot had been flawed. Tails had also theorized that the robot’s own CPU had likely been unable to make effectively make sensible use of the scanned data, unable as it was to process organic experiences and such. The fact that the Sally-bot had been irreparably lost meant they couldn’t test that theory, but it was one they didn’t need to worry about at present.
So, as Tails had prepared to subject himself to the scanner, now given an upgrade to hopefully correct the problems Robotnik had had, he and Nicole had decided the solution would be a series of much slower scans. This would allow for a complete copy to be made and stored within Nicole’s computer mainframe.
Nicole turned back to look at her lover. Tails’s teeth were gritted, but more in discomfort than in pain. The fox had described the experience as extremely tingly, like the feeling your nose got just before you sneezed only all over your head. Having never had to sneeze the analogy had been somewhat lost on Nicole, but he’d explained the process to be annoying but manageable.
That hadn’t made the cyber-lynx feel any better, and the second scan had been accompanied by several medical sensor that allowed her to monitor the vulpine’s vitals. If anything started to go wrong, she’d be able to stop the scan immediately.
The ring of electricity began to slow its movements, indicating the scan was nearly done. The digital images of Tails on the computer were nearly complete. Nicole moved to the fox’s side, though she was sure not to touch him. The last thing they needed was for interactions between her nannites and Robotnik’s machine to accidentally wipe out all the progress they’d made. Finally the machine began to power down, the scanners ceasing they detached from Tails’s head and rose back into the metal dome. With the machine’s work done, Nicole quickly lifted the headpiece from her friend’s head.
“Tails? Tails?” she asked quickly as the reynard’s head sagged forward, his eyes closed. “Miles are you all right?”
“Achoo!” the fox suddenly exploded, gripping his nose as he sniffed the air blinking. Then he looked at the concerned lynx, flashing her one of his boyish smiles. “Sorry about that. I’ve been holding in that sneeze for the last three minutes I’ve been in that machine,” he apologized. Then his face grew concerned. “Did it work? Was the copy a success?”
“I wanted to make sure you were all right first,” she chided the Mobian as she undid his restraints, allowing Tails to sag a bit in his chair. “But now that I know you’re alright, I’ll go and check our little project’s progress.” So saying, Nicole stood up and then… nothing. Her body went as rigid as a stone statue, or more accurately a statue of metal. The nannites that comprised the lynx form she used for interaction with other Mobians had ceased moving, ceased actions as the program that compromised her true being vacated them, returning to the mainframe that was its primary housing.
As he watched the computerized entity leave, Tails let his head rest upon one of his hands as he tried to stop the world from spinning. Being scanned always left him a touch disoriented, though he didn’t bother to tell Nicole this. After a few minutes, Nicole’s body became animate again as her attentions returned to the fox.
“All indications are that the scans have been completed and successfully integrated. It is my pleasure to report that there currently exists within my mainframe a perfect copy of all your neural data. Essentially everything that is you has been successfully copied.” At this Tails hopped up from his chair, stretching as he did so.
“Then, my dear, the time has come to move on to step two.”
************************************************
So there is the first part. As you can see it is just a rough draft, but once I get around to providing color for this picture, I plan to make a more in-depth story for each picture. Of course then these will probably end up in scraps, but for now I hope you enjoy this.
EDIT: And now I present to you the fully colored, shaded, and complete picture, finally completed after so many months of inactivity. I hope you all enjoy as I begin to work on the other three parts of this little series to make them as beautiful as this one.

Could Robotnick's brain scanner be used to detect bloodclots, tumors, bleeding on the brain? A "mind" dosen't really exhist.

More than likely, though this is the version upgraded by Tails and Nicole.
You are correct that actually copying Tails's mind would be something of an impossibility, but if you will allow me to indulge in a bit of pseudoscience, it can be explained. Robotnik's old machine utilized an EM field similar to the roboticizer's to copy the electrical impulses of Sally's brain, allowing the Sally-bot to mimic her personality to a limited degree.
The new mach. ne utilizes the EM field in a similar vein to map out the subject's brain before injected nannites assist it in mapping out the neurological and synaptic pathways. Incidentally this is done by stimulating the neurons and faithfully reproducing their interactions, which is why the process is very uncomfortable. The resulting simulacrum is, obviously not actually Tails, but a dormant computer program capable processing information as he would. Sort of a Tails-flavored proto-Nicole. And of course the next part of the story goes from there.

A part of me wants to say it has nothing to do with mind control, but that honestly sounds so cool I can't say no to it. I mean if the nannites were not ordered to flush themselves from the subject's system, they could be used to interfere with their brain's ability to function properly at the behest of the machine.
Looks like Tails and Nicole might want to destroy this machine after they're done.

Understandable. It wasn't everyone's cup of tea, though I do think the comic has mellowed out a bit since Ian Flynn took over. And of course we're getting the new Sonic Boom cartoon come Fall, which promises to be lighter in the vein of AoStH. But honestly I just like getting to explore the characters and their backgrounds, something the games don't always give us sadly.

I've always liked to come up with my own backstories for the characters. For instance, Tails' mother is a seven-tailed kitsune by the name of Sadako. She's a neurologist by profession but still believes the best rememdy for any affliction is a bowl of homemade chicken soup.

So did they ever find Tails' parents? Or did you ever plan for them to be found? Did they sell him to the lab? Did the veternarian dude get killed? I think I remember reading in one of the chapters that he did. Oh yeah, keep meaning to tell you this but I kept forgeting, not all veternarians shave the area where they plan to draw blood from their paitents. I think they will only shave the area if they plain to put in an IV for sedation or do some procedure where they will need acess to the skin like an ultra sound or surgery.

Poor Tails! Why couldn't they just adopt a child?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
AsherTye In reply to RensMeerkat [2014-01-17 15:02:46 +0000 UTC]
It has a bit to do with Nicole's quasi-legal status. While Tails is possibly capable of getting an adoption on his own merits, its a widely known fact he's with Nicole and that she would play a key role in the child's rearing. This would be considered too unstable a household to raise an adoptive child in, so they would be likely to be denied their application. And while the King and Queen (Sonic and Sally) could force the issue through, the cooler heads understand this would be seen as favoritism and quickly undermine the strides Nicole has made to being accepted by the general populace.

That is an amazingly good summary of their situation. Nicole is not considered as a full 'person' (though she darn well is) and going over the heads of the authorities for official adoption could have serious problems. Legitimacy is EVERYTHING when you are running a monarchy.
My question is could Sonic and Sally very quietly commission a trusted agent (say, St. John) to 'arrange' for an orphan to be left on their doorstep with a note saying something like "I know you and I trust you, though you will never know me. Give my little boy/girl all my love." Would that possibly work as an end-around to the official process?

Well, off hand, I'd say because the last time he was trusted, he wound up sucker-punching Sonic and abandoning him in the Special Zone while he went and resurrected Naugus before helping him seize control of the Acorn government.
Not hating on the skunk, but it doesn't sound like someone Sonic and Sally would be willing to trust again.

Somewhat like Quorra. Nicole was fully programmed to serve as Sally's assistant AI, but a combination of interacting and experience, plus a slight corruption of her data due to a body switch incident with Sally, allowed her to eventually gain sentience. She's the upside to the whole AI is a Crapshoot trope, but she's also the OS of a city built using nannites and that makes others very nervous.

I remember reading somewhere that if SatAM wasn't canceled and allowed to continue into a third season, they would have eventually revealed that Nicole was once originally a real live, flesh and blood anthro animal. Supposedly she was Sally's best friend and also a genius. Robotnick was jealous of her smarts and somehow was able to contain her "consciousness" outside her body. It was assumed that Nicole was dead but her "mind", "consciousness" or maybe even what some people would consider as a "soul" was inside the little handheld computer thingy Sally was always carrying around with her. The idea of being able to capture someone's soul and keep it contained outside their body is kinda creepy. Some people think it's possible to do that sort of thing:
"What happens to the souls? What is a soul? A soul is what makes you-you. We are souls, and our bodies are just shells that cover our souls. Can we exist outside our bodies? Yes, as a spirit, in spirit form. The aliens are kidnapping humans and taking out their souls and then putting these souls in storage containers, even boxes, and then taking over the human bodies as their own.
The person who was abducted and kidnapped is not dead. They are still alive, but now as a soul, they are trapped in that container or storage box they were put into. They become prisoners imprisoned in these storage containers with no way out."

Yeah, I've heard that. And that he used her as the kick-off point for his coup, getting her to reprogram the SWATs. Alternatively there was the idea that she was Sally's missing Mom. Which is kinda squicky if you ship Nicole with Tails like I do.
It is a frightening prospect, more so with the idea of what Robotnik would do with such souls he didn't find as useful as Nicole is. Someone actually wrote a story once where their OC assistant to Robotnik figured out how to upload the Robians' minds into a computer and took great delight in deleting them bit by bit. Of course I don't think that kind of stuff is transferrable between mediums, bu the idea of copying or even altering it on the "disk" can be quite the alarming prospect.

Kinda reminds me of the Twlight Zone eppisode, "A World of His Own". I always hated the name "Nicole", becuase when I was in grade school, there was another girl who was particualry mean and nasty, espicaly to me.
Being able to delete them one by one like that reminds me of this skit by Dane Cook about going through his email addresses and getting such a thrill out of deleteing them one by one. I remember doing the same deleting everyone in my cellphone contacts and feel exhillerated. But being able to actually go in and change the actual person's mind like that is kinda creepy and what the Manturian Canidate and MK-Ultra were all about but they never worked fully in the end. I don't know why, but the concept of MK-Ultra has always facinated me. Maybe because there were certian elements about me that certian people just couldn't stand and said "certian people" thought they could break them out of me. and in some ways, they still are. But this "bird" you cannot cage.
I always saw Tails as an asexual "married to the job" type and perfering it that way than to ever pair him off with someone. But then that's becuase Tails is one of those characters I kinda protray myself onto and I myself am definatly not into the whole relationship thing. The ideas of friendship and family are confusing enough to me.

Ha, good episode. Sorry to hear about your Nicole. Jerks can really ruin names down the line.
For me Tails has always been the classically broken character with regards to others. Since his formative years were crappy, he doesn't actively seek contact with others, afraid of getting hurt, or worse, losing someone. But in Nicole I could see him seeing a bit of himself in her. A young person with incredible gifts basically being bullied because the circumstances of her existence are beyond her control. That she's also something of a safe person to attach to helps.
