Description
Alma smiled, gently lifting and placing the youngest of the Nook’s wynglings in their cribs for the night. It had taken her quite a while to gather them but surprisingly barely any of them had thrown themselves into a fuss as she herded them into the room. Perhaps they had finally noticed just how tired she was? All the screaming from this room of a nighttime really didn’t help... Not at all. It was a domino effect amongst the very youngest of them. While she had been getting better night by night, Fizz would often be the one to start it. Screaming and crying, causing the others to wake up and do the same.
Thankfully, some of them were very close to reaching the one month mark and being able to be moved into the rooms the older wynglings were staying in. But being the good and careful hatchery mother that she was, Alma wanted to ensure that they were all properly weened and ready before doing so. Plus, with the constant stream of eggs, there were always more newly hatched wynglings to take their place... which led to more screaming. She was used to it by now but it was rare to encounter a case as bad as Fizz’s. Especially given how she had hatched within the Nook’s walls.
The biped yawned, placing what she assumed to be the last wyngling in their crib before setting out to count them to make absolutely sure.
One... two...
Snuggled peacefully in their blankets.
Ten... eleven...
Already drifting off.
Seventeen... eighteen...
Heads sinking softly into pillows.
Twenty-seven... twenty-eight.
That was all of them. All aside from Fizz.
It took Alma a moment to process what it was that she had just thought. All... ASIDE FROM FIZZ?! Sure enough, her crib lay barren. And so too was her brain as she scrambled to figure out just where the child could have gotten off to. Of course, her legs had grown a lot stronger over these past couple of weeks. That was to be expected and a sign of healthy wyngling growth... but surely she couldn’t have gotten far, right?
Her concern masked with a smile, she blew out the candles in the room. Last thing she needed was the worry the children. “Sleep tight my littlest ones.” She cooed before walking out and shutting the door gently behind her. Now... where was that missing toddler.
Alma set about flitting from room to room. She wasn’t playing with her favourite blocks. She wasn’t lounging on the top of the chair she liked in one of the side rooms. She wasn’t even staring at the front doors like she always seemed to be as of late. She was just... gone. Alma wasn’t allowed to dwell on it for long, however, as...
“Muma Alma?” A wyngling approached her, tugging on her tail as they spoke between sobs, “I can’t... I can’t find my teddy! And... and Kurt keeps trying to poke people in the eyes!”
“Oh dear, sweetie,” she soothed, turning and crouching to talk to the wyngling. “I’ll have a stern talk with him. Where did you last see your teddy?”
Finding Fizz was just going to have to wait. If she wasn’t found by the morning she would head down to the station and alert Russell right away. But with so many wynglings to tear her attention between and get off to bed combined with how exhausted she felt, she doubted that she would be able to do much more than what she had already done.
