Description Blargh, I'm tired to have to look for this all over my photobucket accounts.

Mermaid tail skeleton for my Mermaids... IN SPACE original story-thing. It's actually shortened feet and elongated toes, attached to an elongated backbone.

(I'm not good enough at anatomy yet to bullshit something about how the legs and backbone interact, but the leg bones are mostly cartilage so they don't interfere with the flexing of the tail but offer some support to the vertebras. Tail's supposed to be unfused and elongated coccyx bones, so I suppose the segments ought to be much longer.)

no, sorry, this is intended for my personal novel. you can certainly do something inspired by it though.

So they are seal-people then?

askerian In reply to GizmoBeam [2011-03-16 04:45:51 +0000 UTC]

No, they're 100% human. Just twisted really weird. Seals were probably an influence on the design, but that's it.

I'm thinking of making a piece on mermaid anatomy as whole, this is so going to help xD I had many troubles with the tail and it's movement Great job!

...Ok, this is old and I've probably already commented on it somewhere here..>_>
But mind if I spew some developmental biology all over you?

Because something came to mind: Hox genes! Oh, those lovely hox genes. In fruitflies, just 1 mutation and they have legs instead of antennea on their head. XD
Anyway, instead of just f-ing with them, duplications can happen too. So, instead of just OMG-elongating every joint that already exists originally, just blame it on a duplication mutation? I srsly recommand wikipedia for the rest. I can't really explain it here more without copying my complete textbook. XD

But if this spiked your interest, drop me a message if you wanna know more, m'kay?

*makes mad loev to you all night long* TO THE WIKIMOBILE~

... can you tell i'm excited about this idea. *cough*

OMFG! TO THE WIKIMOBILE!! *dananana nananana*

And my, my! I got molested by the almight Askerion, such honour!

But yussh.. Hox genes are your friend!
And I'm glad to see that 10 weeks of developmental biology were finally good for SOMETHING.

The way the tail is illustrated here makes a lot of sense. It seems like it would actually be functional.

Oh man, I don't know how they link up to the spine, and then I'd still have to figure out where the muscles go and which muscles they were BEFORE and how that would make them look now, and that's way too much, I don't know enough about anatomy XDD;;;

But it's good enough to bullshit with. XD Thank you for the comment. ^__^

Damn, I wish I had thought about that before you did

Just kidding, it looks great! How the hell did you come up with that? I hope your story becomes a succes ^^

Bwahaha, too late, it's my idea now! >D

Come up with the mermaid skeleton or the story concept itself? ^^

thank you. ^___^

When I see this I think two things.

One...Now the Little Mermaid makes sense...If the fins were just big feet in the first place then they just were made smaller and less scaly! I feel so informed! ^-^

Two. Now I'm wondering if instead of hands...Sasuke has giant feet on his back...O.o

Sorry. But this is really cool. ^-^ Yayz for Wikipedia! ^-^

With much love, A Vampires Butterfly ^.^

;; hehe, I don't think legends like the little mermaid really bother to have realistic-ish anatomy. She has fish fins instead of webbed toes, after all.

... bwahaha giant wing-feet. That's ridiculous, but then again not much more than his demon stage already is.

thanks! ^__^

These kinds of things are awesome to see about a story. I am sure it will show in your writing that you've thought so much about things like this!

I am so dumb on stuff like this. I wish half of that didn't fly over my head so I could appreciate it better. (I am recalling that time you began discussing recessive and dominant eye and hair colours for OC children. xD)

The bone structure looks amazing though. Very realistic. Good job!

... XD;;;; *petpet* I like using big words to make it sound like OMG SCIENCE, but it's not that complicated really. I'm bullshitting most of it. XD;;;; If you want me to explain it more simply, I could do that.

thank you ^__^

*snerk*

Basically for now it's just like they stretched out the tailbone and stuck deformed feet at the end. I like using the big words though XDDDD

Mais non, mais non. Mais si sa queue est des jambles et vertèbres déformées, faut bien que je sache de quelle manière c'est déformé. Si je faisais ça au pif ça serait trop joli. C'est censé être plutot beurk.

Not knowing anything about the human skeleton (or any skeleton, for that matter) I ran on over to wikipedia and looked up the coccyx bone. I really love this concept you have.

Interesting original ideas like this paired with outer space seems like a great basis for a story. I can't wait to read it.
