Description Tools! Photoshop 7 and a Wacom tablet.

It hurts a bit to call this a "tutorial" because the way I draw is kind of messy and I've seen much better stuff around, so going HAHA I CAN TEACH YOU STUFFS" seems a bit pretentious -- seriously, go look at 's tutorials , they're much more clear and detailed and they have better tricks. But, someone asked about the method I personally use, so, here it is.

J'admire vraiment le passage du croquis au lineart u_u .

Fantastic! Though I don't have photoshop, so I'll have to adapt your words of wisdom...still, it's really useful to see the order in which you do things.

Do you plan to do more tutorials? If so, please, please, pleeeeease do one of your sketching style - it's really unique and I love it!

askerian In reply to Y0URIMAGINARYFRIEND [2009-05-13 13:56:22 +0000 UTC]

Oh man, my sketching style is really whatever goes. I've internalized it so much I don't think I could still break it up into steps. .___.;; Also it's a lot less polished than the coloring -- coloring is just technique, but sketching is mostly about inspiration, and that's a lot harder to control. A good two thirds of the sketches I start end up trashed.

I'm glad you liked the tutorial. ^__^

Do you use Col-Erase pencils? Is that why it's blue?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

askerian In reply to Luffy-Kun [2009-05-02 05:41:48 +0000 UTC]

No, it's computer drawn from scratch. I use blue because if I used gray it would mix with the black lineart and I wouldn't know where I'm at, and other colors tend to make me squint too much when i'm trying to be precise with the inking.

Thank you for the tutorial, I got pretty much everything you were saying, but I don't have a tablet. -sweatdrop- Yes, everything is done by mouse, and on Paint Shop Pro 9 rather than Photoshop.

Youre amazing ;_;
I have been inspired by you once again to keep drawing, and keep trying till the coloring comes out good.
Looking around here at how ppl can color so well is discouraging to me personalty, cuz I think I'll never be that good, so why even try T_T but this has given me a spark of hope that maybe one day I'll get it! *sigh* just gotta keep going.

If someone already commented and told you sorry for retelling you, but the checkerboard box you click is called "lock transparency button."

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

KabochaKitsune [2009-04-28 01:30:05 +0000 UTC]

Mmmmmm tutorial.

And oh jeebus yes, the transparency lock. That thing is a godsend. D: (It's incredibly useful for if you totally bugger up shading, too, or dislike the color scheme and want to try a different one, because you can just "fill" the layer with the base color and start over.)

The doubled skintone looks like it's set on what the English version of PS calls "Multiply." Where white goes 0% opaque when you set it there, black stays 100% opaque and everything else is varying levels of opacity? One of my favorite modes for tweaking things.

And YAY HAIR. Your method for that is strange and new to me; I may have to give it a whirl.

I have to ask: what brush/size/pressure/blah do you use to ink? I have SUCH trouble getting smooth ink lines out of Photoshop.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

askerian In reply to KabochaKitsune [2009-04-28 16:49:03 +0000 UTC]

I don't have a clue about anything on the english version! *pets french version* but yes, sounds like multiply. >.>;;;

I have about a dozen methods for hair. One of them involves actually drawing individual hairs. hahaha o self wtf. XD;;

As for the brush pressure and whatnot, I have no clue? Brush sizes I change very often depending on what I'm coloring at the time. Little hairs are often done with 3 or even 1 diameter. I was doing lineart with 3 too but now i'm better used to the pressure thingie i'm going up to 5 and even 9 for a brush-ink kind of feel. Pressure... I have no clue. The secret is to move your hand somewhat fast, because when you slow down it's guaranteed to go zigzaggy. But then it gets difficult to aim, argh.

Pretty cool! I liked your panel about coloring hair the most (it's my weakness, I can never get it to look right). I used amaretti's tutorial for my first coloring, it's a great tutorial.

askerian In reply to NekoRaven [2009-04-28 16:53:02 +0000 UTC]

Hair is really hard to get right at first. You've got to have a sense of how the hair locks move and where it shines in the light and everything, blargh. DX

Neat There are some useful tips in here.

I think the funny colour-locking thing is called transparency lock? Or something like that.
