Description
Mercury woke to a throbbing head and when he opened his eyes the light made him flinch. But, when his eyes finally adjusted and he could see his surroundings he looked around. Immediately he recognized the interior of the healers’ den. The den was warm and the nest was soft. He was tempted to go back to sleep but a voice at the back of the den made him lift his head. Seeley, the healer was rummaging through her supplies in the back of the den, Mercury recognized the strong smell of herbs which meant she must be mixing them.
She glanced his way and saw him watching her. She smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. Mercury narrowed his eyes at her, he knew that look. Udi had been giving it to him since they’d gotten back from the city. The distrust, the hurt, the anger, all covered with a fake smile. But their eyes told him everything he needed to know and she knew. She knew what had happened. What he’d tried to do. He looked away ashamed.
“Why am I here?” He mumbled.
“You don’t know?” She murmured back.
He thought about it but it was all fuzzy and to much effort. “I don’t remember.”
He heard her sigh. “You passed out during training. You’ve been here since yesterday afternoon.” He thought he heard pity in her voice but he ignored it.
The red cheetah pushed himself to a sitting position, his legs shook with weakness as he did so. A regular occurrence these days. Seeley watched him silently the whole time. It all felt like too much effort but he forced himself to stand, struggling the whole time but hardly letting it show in his tired eyes. Mercury turned from Seeley and started to stumble out of the healer’s den.
“Where are you going?” She asked.
“Back to training.” He mumbled, stumbling as he took another step.
“Your mentor is refusing to train you.” He stopped in his tracks at that. He glanced back at Seeley. She stood and shoved her herbs away. “That is, until you figure whatever this is out and get some strength back.”
“I’m fine.” He said looking at the ground.
“Look at yourself. You aren’t fine. You don’t eat. You hardly sleep. It’s taking its toll. A cat your age should hardly be in here at all but you’ve been here at least every other day because someone brought you in.” He sighed tiredly and she kept talking. “Your running yourself into the ground, Mercury.”
“I’m not.” He said defiantly.
“You are!” She hissed, coming up beside him, anger in her eyes. “You just don’t care.”
“Why should I?!” He snapped, swinging his face around till it was inches from hers.
She jumped back at his sudden snarl, shocked. It was the most energy he’d shown in the weeks since he’d come back. Turning away again he stumbled out into the morning sun. It’s feeling warmed his pelt but he hardly noticed it. Walking shakily across the rocks, but suddenly there was paws on his back, shoving him down. His legs barely held out and it was all he could do not to fall on his face. So he settled with sitting and looked behind him. There was Seeley, looking absolutely furious.
“I know what happened.” She hissed. “I know what you went through, what you were going to do and I’m so angry. So disappointed but, Mercury, you’re like my brother and if that sister doesn’t want you then this one does.”
He stared at her blankly. “But I…” He trailed off, unsure what to say.
She sighed, settling beside him. “Listen, I’m angry and I’m sad about what you did. I never thought you would even think about doing that but the bottom line is that you didn’t. You got Udi out of there and you came back with him. You admitted your mistakes and you came back. You came home. I might be angry but I care. I want you to be strong again, I want to see you finally smile and enjoy yourself. Tell me how to help you.”
He looked up at the sky, through the rocks that made the coastal cavern the home of Stone empire. “I’m not worth anything.” He whispered. He paused and Seeley didn’t say anything. So, he continued. “I can’t eat because I’d be taking from the empire. I can’t sleep because my nest was made by someone of the empire. I can’t take anything from this empire because I don’t deserve to be here. I don’t have a place here. I did once and I tried to run away and then I tried to destroy it. All so I could go back to what I thought was home. But, I should have never tried to go home. When my mother came and died I should have been to scared to leave. I should have stayed and I should have never gone to the city. I don’t have a place here anymore because I tried to destroy it.”
There was silence when he was finished. He stared at the sky unable to look at Seeley. He suddenly felt her paws settle on his back once again, but this time she was gentle.
“You want to be part of this family? You want this to be your home?” She asked.
A small sad smile played across Mercury’s features. “It already was. I’m hoping it can be again.”
“Maybe to help yourself then you need to help them. Do something for them. Make yourself valuable to them and you’ll be valuable to yourself again.”
“Help them? Like you do? You help them in a way that few can.”
“I do.”
“Will you teach me? I want to help them, I want to take care of them. I need to help them and heal them. Heal their wounds and be there for them. I want to do something other than fight and spill blood for them. I want them to see that they can trust me. They may not know but I do. I need to prove myself." He spoke softly at first but his voice carried more and more determination as he spoke. He was going to do this and nothing was gonna stop him. He would prove his worth in something other than blood. He would take care of them and heal them. He would show them and even himself that he could be worth something.
He looked at the only sister he needed now with hope in his eyes. "Seeley? Will you teach me to be a healer?"

Mercury's try-out for healer in Stone Empire.
Most likely the story won't make much sense because Part 2 isn't up and that is because it is an RP and there is limited time to finish the try-outs. So, long story short Mercury makes some questionable choices in the city while looking for his sister and almost betrays his empire. After being disowned by his remaining family, the boy is having a hard time dealing with his actions and the regret and guilt are killing him.
