Thanks! It's one of my first images, taken almost eight years ago. Unfortunately that was my last total solar eclipse

is this long exposure of multiple single shots taken over time?
so awesome, either way! beautiful.

This is a multiple exposure on a single piece of film, for the eclipse stages and one digital photo of the ambient during totality. The best total eclipse I've ever seen!

I hope you will read this in time . The exposure times varied from 1/10s to 1/2000. You should try a multiple exposure on film... good luck, clear skies... I won't be in Novosibirsk this time, but surely in China 2009 :0

Hello Alex!
What was the exposure/f-number/ISO for landscape and for total phase of eclipse? Im very interesting since Im going to Novosibirsk 1 of august.
See you in Novosibirsk!

It depends what you understand with "photo manipulation". There are just two superimposed pictures, both adjusted for contrast, levels and colors to show the atmosphere of the eclipse as close to the real thing as possible. Thanks!

Circlejourney In reply to astrofireball [2008-07-04 14:05:13 +0000 UTC]

yeah, that's sort of my definition of "photo manipulation"-- using two or more photograph sources to form a picture. It's good, though!

This is fantastic! This probably could've actually been taked in one photo, if you could calculate the exposure for 33 multiple exposures every say, ten minutes. But that'd be way too complicated. So exactly what two photos did you overlay?

astrofireball In reply to chrismakesmusic [2008-03-10 14:47:39 +0000 UTC]

Hi! That's not really so complicated and the two photos overlayed are the background one (with the sky and temple remains) and the multiple exposure one showing the eclipse progress. Thanks!

You got to see a solar eclipse?! Oh, I'm so jealous now! Hee hee.

Spectacular series! Looks like you found a great spot for the foreground, too.

I've seen actually two solar eclipses and the third is booked, in 2009 The shadow of the Moon was above me for 5 minutes by now

Hi! I'm not sure to what you referr as a manipulation, but the image is composed from two images, taken separately - one with the background, during the totality and another multiple exposure on film, using an old Smena. Thank you for your words

Alex37 In reply to astrofireball [2008-01-06 13:05:19 +0000 UTC]

rely the other exposure was not taken during the totality? Why would the horizon be brighter and the clouds lit as if by a sunset? That makes no sense to me at all. Even during the totality the sun would still be the main light source surely?
Nice composite.

astrofireball In reply to Alex37 [2008-01-06 15:38:26 +0000 UTC]

One exposure was taken during the entire eclipse (the multiple exposure) and the backgruond (with the twilight - like sky) with another camera, during the totality. The horizon is brighter than the clouds because at the horizon the eclipse is not total hence the sky must be brighter there. It is red for the same reason that a sunset sky is - Rayleigh scattering.
Bset wishes,
Alex

I forgot to tell you what an absoultely awsome sight is an 360 degree sunset - like sky. It was reddish and looked just like that (only the colors differ, as you can see) [link]

you're welcome, i was just refering to the 2 seperate photos being merged together. it's not like it could be taken in one shot that way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

astrofireball In reply to omagnas [2008-01-06 15:30:37 +0000 UTC]

Well... it could of been taken on just a piece of film but it would of just been a very lucky shot with that Smena. The quality of the lens was awful, a 50mm 5.6 or somethnig like that. Even if it is possible to take a picture like that in olny one frame, it is indeed very difficult without proper equipment.
