Description
So I decided to update this picture based on the fringe-less female turians that have been seen in ME comics, it makes sense to me and I think I kinda like it more. Females might wear veils or hood of sort to compliment their heads, maybe use plumage or other types of interesting decorations. Let me know what you think-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Original Version: asurael-returns.deviantart.com…
First of all I must state that this is official Mass Effect concept art and that I take no credit for it. This is copyrighted material. All I've really done is photoshop the male Turian to what I believe a female Turian would look like.
Now that that's out of the way, I'll explain my thought process. First thing I tried to do is make her a bit daintier than the male Turian, for this I basically just barely shrunk her and slimmed down some of her features. Then I rounded out some of the spikier bits, which I thought was too much of a male trait. I also figured that the larger mandibles and carapace might both be distinctive male features used to impress females, therefor they would be downplayed in females. I also took the opportunity to give her a smaller jaw.
Also, based on Garrus's line in ME2 "If you were a Turian I'd be complementing your fringe or your hips", so these two features should be the characteristic features in females I suppose, therefore a curved down the fringe a bit to make it appear more like hair. Then I slightly widened and thickened the hips and thighs, a clearly distinctive female feature in most animals.
And finally, I added another make-up square to show her all prettied up. I think that really helps bring it all together and really make her look girly.
And that's it, this should be my last ME gender switch submission, though I am considering designing some clothes and armor for the females in order to help accentuate their womanhood, especially in those that need it like the Krogan.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Commentary on Official release of Turian Female:
masseffectclub.deviantart.com/…
After seeing the official female Turian, it would seem that this corrected version of my Deviation was the correct one. She looks pretty much like I expected, except foe the mandible, which still remain large, but maybe a bit less spikier and a tad smaller than Male mandibles. And the eyes look really cool, it's a detail I did not think of, but makes an enormous difference in making her look female. And as I thought, they did use the facial markings to kind of accentuate the lips and her femininity. We still need a body shot and having the chance to see her next to a male for a size comparison, but so far I seem to have been pretty close, and I'm personally very happy with the official Fem Turian.

Was it so hard to reference stuff like this, Bioware?
You'll pull Liara artwork off DA, but modeling a turian is too difficult?

The thing I love is that they don't look too different. Also, you didn't slap on breasts, which is another point up. I do like the design, though I don't see how jewelry would suit a standard military turian of either sex, but it's interesting to think about - now I'm wondering what would make any turian decide that jewelry, whether face piercings or something else.
As for the makeup - I find it odd mainly since turians have face paint to show their origins and just makeup for aesthetic reasons would be counterproductive. Unless they were barefaced, but then to wear makeup might even be an insult or disregardful, since it has nothing their traditions.
The fridge-less female has me on the fence. A part of me likes it because it does match up with the comics, and that is supposed to be an expansion of the canon. On the other hand, I do like to think females have a fringe of some sort, even if it varies from a standard male fringe.
The rounded out parts of the body helps distinguish between the sexes, but I feel like it's for turians it's unnecessary. This could just be nit-picky on my part, but since they seemed to be viewed equally and hold the same responsibilities, roles, etc. I understand the hips and the height, the collar bone - but I don't really get the back of the legs of the bones on the hips. Again, though, that's just my perspective - the changes are still great and well done and I like how you went about it overall.

Well, now there's an official release to compare this to, finally after years we can all stop theorizing and start comparing:

For the most part, my preview was pretty accurate, but I like the changes that Bioware went with when making the official one. Now it's clear that she's female, but without giving her boobs of course. The corner of the eyes looks odd though, not sure if it's make-up, eye-lashes or just the shape of the eye slit.
Anyway, as for the make-up on my image, that's mostly for fun, I do it with the Salarian and Krogan too, but it brings up some interesting thoughts. Glad you liked it

Some are based on the comics canon (which apparently isn't canon), and some are not .

From what I've heard, at least that's the case when the artists get creative with the license, like figuring out what female turians look like.

Yes. Perfect. I like this. I only think their waists would be wider, for when they become pregnant, because I imagine they give live birth to their young.

Actually, the hips are significantly widened, any more and it would've looked a bit ridiculous or odd. If you can't notice it then focus on the negative space between the legs. I also rounded out the "cheeks" for her rear, to further stray from the boney spikiness of males, and to kinda improve resemblance to human females.

do the comics even count bc i don't read them like the gears of war 3 comics and i told a person DH made them and he had no idea
the prefer the old version she just looks a lot better with hair..so to speak and great job on showing the difference genders i loved looking at the other races too but BW just got lazy on making a female/male(asari) just like tali's picture

I understand the comics aren't technically canon now, but I've actually grown fond of the fringeless look, or maybe I could do something that's in between the two, like a really short fringe that just covers the skull. And I don't think BW was lazy, more like they had better priorities, and mystery like this is great inspiration for fanart. You have to remember they work for EA, so they must have a lot of pressure to deal with. I'm expecting we'll eventually get official versions of the females though.

The new design looks more like the one from the comic, but I like both designs nonetheless. Fanart is fanart, and canon should remain canon; you have your own interpretation of what a Turian could look like if she grew up on a different part of the planet. Just as humans are diverse in their culture and appearance, why not Turians? Don't let canon discourage you from trying new things.

True, canonical or not, it should not discourage creativity, unless you're trying specifically to be canonical, which is the case . I think that's why most people like my ME gender swap submission, they seem to be as canonical and convincing as possible.

Bioware has actually stated that the female turian design in the comics isn't canon and the artist has state that he was given free reign to come up with his own design (I wonder why BW didn't give him concept art for female turians to work from?)

I get the feeling the comic version of female turians is non-canon. It just doesn't make sense compared to what we know of Turian biology (the fringe is supposed to protect them from the intense heat from their sun) and it contradicts what Garrus implies is desirable in females. Unless Garrus is into some odd looking women.....

I liked the original version, and I like this one, too. I'm very much liking the bald head for female turians, but on the other hand the evolutionist in me says, "Total bald head doesn't make no sense for protection purpose."

True, unless the fringes don't really add much protection and are really just an aesthetic display, which also makes sense.

I'm back and forth on that. On the one hand, the males are clearly stated to have "Crest Horns," which makes sense to talk about the length of those spikes as the crest out and is very much...male, for the lack of better words. Yet, it was pointed out that asari's fronds look similar to fringes, but the don't really look like what males have.
Generally, while I think the dark horse comic arts wasn't really perfect in drawing aliens in general, which is totally excusable since some like turians are really crazy, and while I can see the bald working, it just seems...lacking. I mean, not even plates along the back, even with the face fully plated? It seems odd to me.
I'm not one of those who are like, "Beatify them!" Because, no, we aren't dealing with mammals or anything. Doesn't make sense. And why yes, there are a lot of species where there are no apparent differences between males and females.
Though I shouldn't talk. I really don't have a set ideal, either. Most anywhere between bald with a very flat line of plates going back and down the base of the neck and very short, perhaps six line up little crest clinging to the cranium is 'Female' in my brain. Though either of the versions you made are still very compelling and I can jump on either one of those designs. It clearly still looks turian, which is really the most important thing.

I'm still a bit undecisive myself, but I'm liking the "bald" version more and more I think.
Thanks
