Description
Name: Ciel
Age: 43
Sex: Female
Race: Bolas Dridder
Height: 94 feet
Hair: Dark green
Eye Color: Golden Yellow
Skin: Light green
Abdomen: Light wooden brown with some patches of green
Predation: Opportunistic, borderline Reluctant
Appearance:
Ciel is of a lighter build of body but that’s not to say she appears weak, she just seems a bit small as a consequence of being a Bolas Dridder more suited for less direct confrontations, although still athletic. The most striking feature of Ciel would be her eyes, standing out in contrast to the rest of her green and earthy colors. She keeps her dark green her short mainly because she sees it as a hindrance and annoying to take care of when it’s too long. The patches of green on her abdomen are somewhat of a wavy leaf shaped.
Ciel can always be found carrying a small leather sack at her sides, a gift given to her by her parents held together by animal skins and dridder silk. Apart from this she also wears a more crude loose fitting leather vest made with what she can get and dyes it green. While other dridders have been known to craft shirts or the like with their silk she prefers the leather as it stands up to the wear and tear of the jungle far longer and still isn't too bulky.
Background:
Ciel grew up in a small tribe of giant dridders in the northern borders of the Dridder Forest, being the only child of her two parents. During her youth, she grew up alongside a few human sized dridders as close friends that belonged to the tribe as well and often spent a lot of her time with them. Growing up among a tribe of dridders influenced her significantly towards some aspects of dridder culture, being greatly fascinated with the stories of dridder warriors in particular. For the most part this led her to spar with her friends fairly often, even if she wasn't the most successful for a long while with brute force not being a defining trait of her species. While this worried her parents some initially, her behavior seemingly ignoring what they had been striving to teach her what dangers to be aware for when she matured, they eventually chose to support her. Over time she took lessons from them to fight with more cunning, learning to use her silk as a weapon instead and rely more on guile to achieve more success.
Growing up left her in an odd position of literally outgrowing most of her friends- while still being friends with them, interacting with them grew more and more difficult. Eventually after being fully grown and confident enough of her abilities, she settled on heading out on her own way and departing from her tribe- the thought of what else could be beyond the dridder forest drawing her to explore. If she had wanted to achieve anything like the stories she cherished she knew it wouldn't simply be waiting at home. Saying farewell to the ones she grew up with was far harder than she had imagined, but her parents reassured her and gave her the satchel she carries to help her on her way.
For a while she wandered fairly aimlessly, not having much of an idea how to achieve the goals she wanted until she reached the Chidokai Forest which she had made her new home. It would be here that she would find what she was looking for during a daily hunt for food; she came across a group of strange warriors armed with only simple swords and arrows who would prove to be no match for her. At first they were understandably terrified, being hunted by the giant dridder. However, she quickly noted how their reaction changed shortly into her encounter. After capturing a few of them, she took notice of the bravery they showed; doing everything they could to protect each other despite against impossible odds. Such spirits reminded her of the stories and friends she grew up with and she let them live. After sparing them, she chose to help them as best she could to reach Negav safely.
This moment drove her to want to explore more and possibly encounter more people like them as well, regardless of who they were. If such people could hold the bravery of the stories she cherished so much, it would be worth it for her to simply meet them and learn even more of why they are so brave. From her home in Chidokai she occasionally travels around, but still visits her old home as well, a spot remaining in her tribe if she so chose.
Notable abilities:
Ciel is an adept fighter, having sparred and practiced most of her life as a child. She primarily defends herself by tying a line of web to a metal orb to use as a flail or ball and chain kind of attack. While still a practiced warrior with or without weapons above most wild predators, she is not perfect having won and lost a fair amount of times as well while growing up.
Beyond this, she has all the normal skills of a Bolas Dridder, being able to sense things touching her webs even when not in contact with it. Her skill at manipulating her silk makes this especially dangerous being able to swerve the arc of the orb into unexpected moves. Beyond this, she likes to use her silk to go fishing, sometimes by attaching a hook onto the end of it.
Personality:
Ciel tends to be fairly mild mannered and cautious dridder, preferring to live life in a prepared fashion as much as possible. This mostly manifests in her ensuring daily routines are followed, such as checking on her webbing, clothes or equipment she carries and trying to keep surprises to a minimum (such as leaving small web trip lines occasionally while exploring to make sure nothing may be following her). On the other hand of this, while she is comfortable being prepared, she finds it harder to think on her feet- being a bit indecisive trying to figure out what might be best to do. Occasionally however she will take breaks from her routines and just unwind, her favorite activity being fishing- preferably far away from any Jaykay birds.
Beyond this, Ciel is a very curious and slightly adventurous individual, still seeking out more encounters like the one in her past. It's not always on her mind, but definitely a thing she hopes for at the very least. Her curiosity manifests a lot in trying to understand things or just exploring to new places occasionally, and sometimes tampering with her own methods for hunting or the like. Her fishing methods vary often in this, sometimes using a simple fishing line or developing different styles of nets to see how well each works. She is still very cautious though, and will often just watch something or someone new to her from up in the trees trying to understand them before doing anything else. This tendency however can be slightly unsettling to others, as sometimes a first meeting usually results in her seemingly stalking someone from hiding in the trees with those sharp eyes staring down at them.
Ciel grew up under a strong moral code of respect and still follows it closely even living away from her tribe. This mostly manifests in her being very mindful of another predator's territory when she travels around, not wanting to cause trouble in her adventures out of her home. When stumbling into another predator like this she usually will try to just apologize and be on her way without causing too much trouble rather than resorting to anything hostile. She will attempt to try to understand things from their perspective if possible, such as if she appears to frighten someone by accident she will try to ease their concerns and try to appear as non threatening as possible.
She may not like to pick fights with others for no reason, but she does enjoy a good sparring if she gets a chance; her moral code even stronger when it comes to fighters and testing each other's abilities. To her, a spar is just a kind of game planning out moves to get the best of each other in a contest rather than an actual fight- with the added bonus of being a useful survival skill if she should need it.
Hunting habits:
She hunts by a few methods, the first being the classic Bolas Dridder method of hiding up in the trees and catching smaller prey with a ball of sticky silk stuck on the end of a long line. Another method being setting up thinner webs of silk throughout a section of the Chidokai Forest and trying to make use of the Jaykay birds starting up a lot of noise to confuse her prey to have them run in fear into her traps. This method is still a work in progress for her though as the annoying birds will spoil her own trap half the time as is anyways with their chattering before the prey is in the right spot or the stupid birds get caught up in it giving it away. Jerry's persisting interference with this method in particular has made it a very rarely used tactic of hers. Finally, she also goes literally fishing as mentioned before, as mermaids are a favored treat of hers. As with most other predators, she does like to swallow her prey whole like many others for the smaller variety.
To track larger prey, she prefers to lace sections of her territory with individual 'trip' strands that she will use to follow their movement. She tends to avoid more equal sized or larger beings due to their difficulty; these are only hunted rarely and when she does she makes use of the whole creature in supplying some more leather for later- taking out this kind of prey involves using the flail method earlier to knock it out and then finish it off.
In regards to smaller humanoid prey, she has a conflicted mindset at times with them and doesn't actively go out of her way to specifically hunt these kinds of prey, barring small mermaids on her fishing trips. Her memories of her childhood friends, whom never grew up as giant dridders, sometimes bothers her when it comes to hunting them. She knows it's normal to eat them (having eaten tinies when the opportunity arose growing up), and does so on occasion, but still being fairly young as a giant leaves her with odd feelings towards smaller prey. She tends to make these encounters quick if she can and is on her hunting part of her routine for these matters.

First off, apologies for the monstrously long comment section XD- as you can tell if you reached this far, I decided to update Ciel's bio...it being 5 years now since being made. Yup, that's right- the occasion for this all is another of these portraits marking the first day I started working on her heh, silly thing to note of me, but what can I say, I enjoy working on her and this fun place a lot . A lot of the core is still there plus some bit of expansions and just a bit of insight as to why she has seemed like such a softy as of late heh...
As for the picture itself, I'm really pretty happy with how it came out I think- there are a few things I have to work on still I definitely feel (most notably, my poses still feel very stiff) but I think I learned a nice bit of new things working on this. For once I am really happy with the hair XD...the hands still my enemy though heh. Overall though, it may have been just another simple portrait (I sure like spamming you guys with these of Ciel huh? ) but I had fun working on it and practicing backgrounds some more too heh. Anyways, before ranting on too long, I think I'll just let the work do the talking and leave you with it rather than extending this comment section any further heh. As always, comments and especially critique are all very welcome!

I wish I had more thoughts or critique for either the picture itself or the biography about her. Putting that entire bio bellow the image is an especially good idea that I wish more authors would set up, given there's more to look into. And I'll also note that this biography is near identical to the old one in all but the mention of having small friends and that she avoids hunting small humanoids (beyond mermaids) which ... yeah that is a huge departure from the original stories featuring this character. No real way to justify it this new piece of information as it would invalidate the vast majority of all her previous actions. It /is/ a bit strange that she'd be uncomfortable eating small people to begin with simply because most of her friends were small, AND ended up almost murdering a group of noble humans before realizing they cared about each other and did not want to watch everyone they knew die before their eyes. But then I suppose the combination of both aspects of her childhood and early adulthood would be more profound than just one or the other.
I do notice her shirt is a shade of green, matching the color of leaves. With that color scheme it must be hell trying to spot her skittering about among the tree-tops.

That's precisely it actually- it was a combination of both those aspects that really shaped her up to have those feelings. She's a large combination of things leading up to where she is, and it's affected her a lot in those regards. As for her design, she always had that green leaf vest although Stringfountain was the one who came up with that particular design, but the camouflage idea was fully intended for that heh.

Great to know my skyrim/Felaryan character can conjur up weapons....I mean his physical weapons can be removed in a process but overall.

Um, I admit you have me a bit confused on how you got that out of the picture or bio heh.

Mainly the combination of the hunting habits and the opportunistic level. Height doesn't matter.
But overall in a character sense and topic, she is developed and looks like she is good for most situations.

cool , its a pretty sweet compile for ciel, i already knew her quite well from reading stories with her in them but this is great for quick refrence.
i got a much clearer idea of what her -metal ball on a string, weapon thing - looks like and how it works
, i could certainly more easily picture her using it now
. my favorite part was the one about her past, growing up with the smaller dridders and her departure from her home
.

Thanks heh- I just really felt the old one was kind of out of date with how I'd been writing her more, but for the most part it's pretty much just how she's been in the stories anyways heh. I'm glad you enjoyed the bits of her growing up with them like that too- it's been one of my favorites to think about being the current story arc I'm working on too .

Damn, somehow this got lost among my sea of massages, and I missed it until now!
Anyway, very nice work on both the picture and the bio! I can certainly relate about the difficulties of refurbishing an older bio (I think Mina's may have been more than 5 years old when I finally fixed it up )
Your art skills are definitely improving, and even the background here is pretty solid. Overall the bio itself does a rather nice job of giving a solid overview of the character without growing unnecessarily lengthy or detailed.
This also reminds me I really need to 'refurbish' a few more of my character profiles myself, at least until I've got ones done and current for my most primary characters.

No worries heh, and thanks for the comment as well . It certainly was feeling a bit dated with how I used to write back then, but it's still nice to see a lot of the core of the characters existed even back then before doing more work on it (and Mina has always been adorable really too heh
).

I'm not an art critic, but I can definitely say the fingers on her right hand are short and stubby as all hell.
What I can critique, however, is the bio, though there isn't much for me to critique. It works well, her backstory is certainly more fleshed out than I remember and her personality does a good job depicting her as an overall normal gal with a quirk or two. One thing I have to bring up is I'm surprised she's even attempting to make use of the stupid parrots in her hunts. Bit of misplaced optimism on her part in my opinion.

Ya...that right hand was trouble all the way through- and it looked even worse many many times before at that >.>. The fingers are supposed to be more pointed towards us...but the perspective I couldn't quite get right so it just kinda did...that heh.
The birds are for the most part very misplaced optimism heh...and just being nice to Liora offering to 'help' her lending them from time to time I imagine . Anyways, glad the bio comes across as it did, very much the direction I wanted to take her in- and particularly explain a bit of why she acts kind of odd with humans than most others heh.
