Description Well, I decided to make a tutorial on how I color my traditional drawings, because I've been asked about that several times.
I hope you find something useful from this thing .

Beautiful work! Is your pencil work on a transparent layer? (It looks like you're coloring underneath the linework...)If that's the case, how did you preserve all the tones? I've always had trouble preserving the details of pencil lines post-scan.

Thanks!

The linework is not on a transparent layer, it's just set on Multiply mode. I color underneath, this way the details of the pencil work are preserved. You'd probably need to adjust the linework layer's brightness and contrast, though. I hope this helped

Wow, great tutorial!
I always wondered how to properly color drawings in Photoshop. I'll try that for myself as soon as I can!
By the way, your picture reminds me of a cover-artwork by famous German illustrator monozelle: [link]

Every time I see a great tutorial that makes me want to try for digital art again... I remember how more than a few layers kills my computer.
And it's relatively new. D:

Anyway, great tutorial and lovely picture.

I know what you're talking about. Perhaps you can try working in a "step by step" manner and merging layers you're ready with more often. It's hard for my pc to handle many layers too, so I merge a lot. For the purposes of this tutorial I kept the layers separate and they're around 14-15, but I'd usually work with 5-6 at most.

I will try that, thanks.
You know how many times I had a handfull of layers, finally finished the picture, and my computer crashed it?
Far too many. I'll try to work with around 3-4.
Did you save every few minutes out of fear that your computer would spazz?

Oh yes. I've lost files because of pc or Photoshop crashing several times, so now I make sure to save every couple of minutes and make back-up copies too . You can never be too careful.

yes it surely was!
i'v never used textures at all.. i bet they r helpful in reducing the complexity of coloring... where do you get textures?
