Description As above, so below.

---Baphomet, the Sabbatic Goat-----------------------------------------------------------------------
An Idol or false god, and a catchall term form demons in general, taking the appearance of a
goat-headed and winged hermaphrodite human. Baphomet's origin traces back to the time of the Crusades,
and it's commonly accepted that its name is an Old French corruption of the name of the prophet
Muhammad. By the end of the Crusades the Templars were accused of incorporating Islamic ideas into
their belief system, culminating into wild stories about how they made their initiates worship demons,
and how they all prayed to an evil god called Baphomet. They were accused by the Inquisitors of
heresy, leading the Templars to be sentenced to death. With time the name Baphomet came to be associated
with demons in general, and became a creature of its own, widely associated with an illustration by
Eliphas Lévi, a French occultist, depicting the famous image of the goat-headed being. Truth is, Eliphas
didn't portray Baphomet as a devil at all, but actually as an old god who was worshipped by witches and
pagans, a supreme being that represented the "sum total of the universe", male and female, good and evil,
life and death, etc. Baphomet is nowadays viewed as a bona-fide demon, the King of the Black Masses,
worshipped by the witches in medieval times, and a symbol of evil, the devil and conspiracies in general.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cleaning this drawing was a chore, so I apologize if it looks weird by any means, the paper was just too
dirty.

But well, Baphomet. Kinda weird starting the first myth post of 2017 with him of all people, but oh well.
The design is based on the classic portray of it by Eliphas Lévi, the picture everyone either loves or loves to hate: [link ]
I didn't want to meddle with such classic and symbolic iconography, so I started working on adding stuff to it.
The main focus was splitting his body in half, inspired by Eliphas' quote about how Baphomet was the "sum total
of the universe" and an union of many opposite concepts. Half of his body represents one part, and has a female
body, and the other represents the other half with a male body. The original design had the female body colored
as black and the male as white, but I didn't like the result very much, so it became darker brown and lighter
brown instead. A shame because it loses the black goat connotation, but, compromises must be made.

Most of the rest of the symbolism is already from the famous picture itself. The horn erupting with flame in its
forehead it supposed to represent "the light of knowledge" he bestows upon his worshippers. His pose is the also
the same, famously called "as above, so below", and is supposed to represent "the perfect harmony of mercy with
justice". Or so it seems.
He also uses a caduceus as a phallus, but I really don't want to talk about that.

The leaves around its horns are an allusion to a painting by Francisco de Goya, called "Witches' Sabbath": [link ]
The roses and thorns were added last as some flair, the pentagram with the red candles seemed just too boring otherwise.

...Well, that's it from me this time!
Hope you all liked it, and see you all next time!

Some fun facts about Baphomet:
They first surfaced as an idol that the Knights Templar were accused of worshipping
They are usually used as the symbol for religions such as Satanism and sometimes Wicca as the Horned God, as well as a representation of the Left and Right Hand Paths.

Thanks a bunch!
I was a bit afraid not portraying it as a black goat were going to make it not evil-looking, glad that it wasn't the case.
