Suddenly, I got the very distinct feeling that I was being watched… there, from the stairwell leading up to the rooftop. I tried my best to see who it was in my periphery, but there just wasn't enough light - all I could see was a shadowy figure. "Do you see that, Celeste?" "Huh?" As I pointed towards the stairwell she turned around to look at it - but the shadow was already gone. "Did you see something, Mistress?" "N-No, probably just my imagination." Between the both of us we somehow managed to clear out the entire lunch (which would probably be enough for three or four people), though a faint sense of unease continued to linger over me.
The afternoon's classes went by quickly enough (thankfully there was no physical education class, so I wouldn't have to deal with another intense wave of embarrassment), and before I knew it we were done for the day. "Hah… I'm beat…" I lay face-down on my desk as Celeste packed up her stuff, already feeling the urge to take a long, long nap. "We should get going…" Celeste lightly patted my back and I stood up, realizing that we were already the last people left in the classroom.
Suddenly the door slammed open and I yelped, jumping backwards as Celeste gritted her teeth and threw her hand out in front of me, like she was trying to shield me from an attack. But the figure silhouetted in the doorway wasn't a monster baring its fangs and claws, or even a teacher out for my blood - instead, it was a black-haired boy who I recognized very well. "P-Philip!?" "Ah…" His eyes widened as he saw the two of us, and Philip smiled a little nervously. "Um… I had a question I wanted to ask the both of you." "Do you know him, M- Valeria?" "Yeah… Philip. He was in my class last year." Celeste relaxed, clearly determining him not to be a threat at all, though her gaze still remained wary. "Ask away, then."
Immediately, Philip pointed at me. Well not at me exactly, but slightly above me, slightly above my head. Where… my pair of fox ears were. "I thought I was seeing things when I noticed them this morning, so I kind of, uh… spied on you when you were having lunch, but… those ears. Are they real?" Silence. "What… do you mean?" Even as I asked this I knew what Philip meant… but I had to confirm. "Huh? Those!" Yeah, there was no mistaking it… Philip definitely meant those ears. "Are they cosplays or something? They look really real…"
We were silent for another moment more. "Ah…" My throat felt dry, the realization that I had been found out and that maybe I wouldn't survive this day after all crossing my mind. "U-um…" "Sleep." I shivered as I heard Celeste say that one word, remembering what had happened to me last night… and without another word, Philip's eyes rolled upwards and he slumped to the ground, though Celeste was already there to catch him, and lay him down gently.
"Ho- how?" Shocked, I could only stay right where I was as Celeste stood back up, and dusted her hands. "I thought you said that no one would be able to see our ears…" "Humans." "Huh?" Celeste bit her lips, a look of confusion on her face. "The spell is supposed to work on… all humans." "Then that must mean-" "But it can't. I spent all morning reading the energy signatures of everyone in this school building, and even now his energy is unmistakably that of a human's." She looked at me, gaze firm. "Can you help me? I think we're going to have to kidnap your friend." "...WHAT!?!?"
