Bio: A future national hero of Indonesia, Cut Nyak Dhien was born a noblewoman born into an Islamic aristocratic family in the Aceh Besar regency in 1848. Her father, Teuku Nanta Setia, was born to one of the local ruling classes, and her mother was of high birth as well. Growing up, Dhien was tutored in the traditional ways of religion and household matters as most young girls of the aristocracy were. She was renowned for her beauty, and attracted the attention of many many suitors. However, only one person truly won her and her parents over: a young Acehnese nobleman by the name of Ibrahim Lamnga. His charm and passion won her family's heart, and the two were married in 1860.
Ibrahim, Dhien would eventually learn, was actually the Mentor of an ancient Brotherhood called the Assassins, guardians of Indonesia's cultures against the Templar Order whose power and dominance came from their own allegiances with the Dutch colonists who controlled the islands. As the years went on, Ibrahim taught his wife about the ways of the Brotherhood, eventually indoctrinating her fully. It was through the Brotherhood that she met the Rajawali family, whose two children, Jaga and Apsarini, were tragically orphaned in 1867. Jaga would grow up to be a loyal servant to Ibrahim and Dhien, while his little sister Apsarini failed to develop the same bond.
By 1873, political tensions between the Aceh Sultanate and the Dutch colonists that sought to conquer their territory erupted into the Aceh War. While the Aceh were initially highly successful in expelling the invaders, mostly due to the assistance of the United Kingdom, Italy, and the Assassins, things were beginning to fall apart by November. The Dutch captured Dhien’s home territory, and by the following year they had also captured the Sultan's Palace. By 1875, Dhien, her newborn baby, and many other of the local women were forced to evacuate to a safer location while her husbands led the Assassins to take back what had been lost.
Unfortunately, Ibrahim had been slain by the Templars in battle in 1878. The Assassins were scattered, and Dhien was devastated. She took up her husband's title as Mentor of the Indonesian Brotherhood, and swore revenge against the Dutch for taking him from her.
By 1880, the Assassins and the Aceh had been brutally worn down by the war. Dhien had even grown so tired that she accepted the marriage proposal of one Teuku Umar, whom she had rejected many times in the past. While their marriage and the subsequent birth of their child boosted the morale of the Aceh, it wasn't enough. Peace was declared that year, and the Dutch were on winning terms. And the Templars that supported them had all but dominated the Dutch East Indies by this point. The Brotherhood had been driven to near extinction, and what was left of them was forced to flee with their tails between their legs, even the legendary hero Dhien.
By 1882, Assassin activity on the islands had ground to a near halt, with many too fearful of the Templars’ might to come out of the shadows. Among these people were Dhien and Jaga Rajawali. And among their opposition was Apsarini, who felt that the only way to retake their homeland was to be strong and aggressive against the Templars. Apsarini was hardly listened to, despite her eliminating many prominent Templar targets like Elias Teijsmann. Dhien and Apsarini butted heads mang times on the issue, causing an enormous rift that did not fully heal until extreme events forced them to set aside their differences.
In 1883, the Aceh War raged on once more. Political tensions made the Aceh take up arms against the Dutch in what they declared to be a Holy War. Dhien, regaining her lost vigor, took up arms with the guerrilla fighters against the Dutch. In 1893, her husband Umar had convinced the Dutch that he had betrayed the Aceh and wanted to join their army. In actuality, he acted as a double agent, secretly sending Dutch weapons and secrets to the Assassins and the Aceh over the next two years. The Dutch eventually found him out, and killed him in battle in 1899. Dhien and Umar’s daughter, Cut Gambang, wept over the loss of her father. Dhien reportedly slapped her then hugged her for weeping, remembering her own loss and the weakness it caused, and telling her daughter to stay strong in order to honor those they lost. Dhien continued to resist the Dutch forces until her own army was destroyed in 1901. A combination of lack of supplies, unloyal traitors to the Aceh, and Dhien's own failing health led to her being captured. Her daughter continued to lead the resistance until the Aceh surrendered to the Dutch in 1904, ending the war and giving control of the kingdom over to foreign invaders.
During her time imprisoned by the Dutch, Dhien was sent to Banda Aceh, where her myopia and arthritis slowly healed. After the war, she was forced into exile to Sumedang in West Java, where she would ultimately pass away in 1908. The role of Mentor was passed on to Apsarini after her death, and Dhien would be revered as a national hero by the people of Indonesia for generations to come.
