Description This is an interesting one, because I actually came up with Dunlin waaay back in the early stages when Drake Hero was not a fleshed out shared universe yet. Well okay, technically Dublin is still not a part of the Drake Hero Universe but he is from an adjacent universe. Whether or not that universe is Vlad's, I still haven't decided. Vlad's timeline still needs buffing out. I don't explore alternate history very often, but the more I research strategies to develop these timelines, the more grounded and fun it becomes to explore. The story of Dunlin's universe is one where George Washington was crowned King George I of the United States in 1787. This… may or may not be inspired by my disappointment in how little AC3's DLC actually explored the idea of a divergent timeline XD In fact, Dunlin and his brother Fillan started out as repurposed AC OCs. I really like the aesthetic of a more royalized US, and so I got to work on a more realistic take on if George Washington decided to accept a crown than Assassin's Creed provided. Looking back at my old notes, I'm honestly surprised I had so much fleshed out for this alternate timeline. I kinda got way more focused on Drake Hero proper and forgot about this project. I guess I figured I'd come back to it later once I started using Vlad for actual published stories.

Basically, the American Revolution goes pretty much exactly as it does in our timeline. Dunlin himself serves under Alexander Hamilton in the Hearts of Oak regiment, and gets a front row seat to the horrors of war which threaten his family in New York. His brother Fillan, meanwhile, is sent to France to serve as a bodyguard to Thomas Jefferson and his ilk, getting all cozy on French wine and busty babes. The real divergence comes in the Revolution's aftermath. As in our own history, the first cracks in the country came with the massive debt crisis that destroyed the lives of the Patriot army. Being left with the two options of serving the army for life or being thrown into debtor's prison for life leaves a newborn country feeling like its nation isn't taking care of them at all. Shays' Rebellion breaks out in 1786, and in this timeline, Congress's response is much more drastic. This is because Alexander Hamilton and James Madison met with Washington in private and persuaded him to take the advice of Lewis Nicola. Washington, seeing no other choice, gives a rousing speech to institute a monarchy (as frankly I think the only one who could convince this room of angry old men would be Washington himself). Washington is thus crowned His Highness King George I of the United States, Protector of Their Liberties, with Alexander Hamilton serving as the first Prime Minister of the Federalist Parliament, based on his real historical proposal for how the government should've been structured.

The next problem comes in the form of Thomas Jefferson, who arrives back from France and is absolutely pissed off about this turn of events. This also causes a rift between Dunlin, who struggled to feed his family during the debt crisis and has been risking his life fighting the whole time, and Fillan, who had his mind filled with all sorts of idealist fantasies without having to be anywhere near reality. Jefferson is temporarily placated by being installed as governor of Virginia, but when the Whiskey Rebellion breaks out in 1791 protesting Hamilton's new tax, he sees an opportunity. He calls an assembly with Aaron Burr, Samuel Adams, and Fillan in a secret meeting house in Dorchester, where they plot a second revolution. They instigate riots across much of New England, and eventually an outright battle breaks out in New York (the capital of the country in this timeline). Fillan attempts to assassinate the king, but Dunlin stops him, and ultimately helps suppress the rebels once and for all. Jefferson was captured, and, being such an outspoken supporter of the French Revolution, was sentenced to die by a guillotine made just for him.

That's more or less where Dunlin's story ends in my notes, but I did have a few extra bullet points on the timeline itself. The deteriorating relations with Revolutionary France which led to the Quasi-War in our own timeline escalated into a much bigger conflict in this world's 1798. I don't have any notes on the details besides Alexander Hamilton planning a march on Louisiana via Kentucky which would cut off France's access to the Mississippi. This was an actual plan Hamilton had on the backburner in real history just in case the Quasi-War got a little too hot. King George I dies in 1799 after selecting his nephew Bushrod as his successor. Bushrod dies in 1829, passing the throne to his own nephew John, who in turn dies in 1832 and passes the throne to his son, John II. John ends up being a bit of a parallel to King Henry VI, falling into a catatonic state when he receives word that he lost Texas to the Mexican Army in 1853. This in turn leads into a series of wacky events that sort of combine the American Civil War with the Wars of the Roses, with the North succeeding from the Union in order to install an anti-slavery member of the House of Washington, which they eventually accomplish. Go team!

Design notes, though this one is a little old, I'm still happy with the composition. I really wanted to aim for a sort of 18th century knight aesthetic, with maybe a hint of Roman legionnaire to echo the fall of a Republic. His cape is by far my favorite thing, I'm damn proud of that. As a little easter egg, I also colored his sash like George Washington's historical coat of arms, which today is famously used as the flag of Washington DC. Not much else to say, really. Probably due for a clean up like most of these older drawings, but I'm satisfied with it for now, and I don't have any plans to use this story in anything major any time soon, so it's not a big priority.
