Description
WikipediaName: John White
Born: c. 1540; London, Kingdom of England
Died: 1593; County Cork, Ireland (age 52-53)
Allegiance: Templars
Bio: Not much of John White’s early life is known. Even his date of birth is subject to controversy, though many agree it was somewhere around 1540 or 1550. What is known is that he was born in London, attended church in the parish of St. Martin Ludgate, and was born into the Templar Order. In 1566 he married Tomasyn Cooper, with whom he had two children: a son named Tom and a daughter named Eleanor. John had planned to bring both his children into the Templar Order as he was, but Tom died at a young age and John found he could not bring himself to recruit his daughter into such a life-threatening war. He kept all knowledge of the Templars and their war with the Assassins hidden away from Eleanor all her life.
As the age of exploration and colonization began to blossom in the late sixteenth century, the Templars saw it as an opportunity to regain the power they had lost during the Renaissance when the Assassins crushed them under the leadership of Ezio Auditore. They also caught word of many Pieces of Eden they sought to acquire. John was a strong supporter of this, and he eventually helped lead England's first colonization team alongside Sir Ralph Lane under the financing of Sir Walter Raleigh in 1585. However, this first expedition failed due to multiple difficulties and they were forced to return to England the next year.
Another attempt was made in 1587. White, along with his partners, Roger Bailie and Roger Prat, gathered up a group of over 100 colonists that included themselves, Eleanor and her husband Ananias Dare, and many other civilians and Templar agents. Upon arriving on Roanoke Island, they got to work on rebuilding the remains of the old colony and forming a formal settlement. Things went relatively well for the first few weeks, but it quickly turned sour as the colony’s food supply began to run out. White, not having many options, was forced to return to England to resupply. He hated doing so, especially after Eleanor had just given birth to her daughter, Virginia, but he did it for the good of his people.
Things didn't go as planned, however. Queen Elizabeth I, in the heat of the war against Spain and its armada, issued a “general stay of shipping”, preventing any ships from leaving English shores. No matter how hard he tried, White was unable to return to Roanoke until the issue was lifted in 1590. He and his rescue crew arrived on the island on August 18, only to find the colony in ruins and completely vacant of human life. He found a carving in a post of a single word: “Croatoan”. While pondering what it meant, his thought process was interrupted when a young Native woman named Kahente came out of nowhere and aimed a gun at his head in a fit of depressed fury. She lashed out and explained that his Templars had gone insane and oppressed the colonists in an attempt to find a Piece of Eden. She explained that every colonist, including his family, had been murdered when the Piece was tampered with. She threatened to kill him for not being here for them, but ultimately spared him on behalf of his daughter and told him to never return.
White initially spent his time in denial, and went out to search for the lost colonists. But bad moral and bad weather forced him to give up the search and return home to England. He never returned to the New World again, and he spent the rest of his days grieving over his loss. He lived in Ireland, living on the estates of Sir Walter Raleigh, making maps of land for Raleigh's tenants. After that, not much is known of his life. The last surviving document related to White is a letter he wrote from Ireland in 1593 to the publisher of the prints of his Roanoke drawings. However, a record from May 1606 that a Bridget White was appointed estate administrator for her brother "John White" may refer to him.
