Description
Lil’ Kahente and her mother having a joyful time along the cliffs of Hatteras Island
…
Soooo retcon time XD
I generally try to be very meticulous so that I can avoid as many retcons as possible, but this is a special case. So let's get to it This retcon is a lot like the hookblade: it comes to you in two parts.
Part 1, The Background:
So when I was first writing “Lost” and coming up with Kahente’s character, I had to wing a lot of things involving her culture because I couldn't find any good research articles on the subject. Even when I could find proper research, it was few and far between since most Native American history has been lost or censored over the centuries, which of course is terrible because Native American cultures were so cool and diverse and interesting to learn about and-
I'm getting off track XD
Anyways, one of the big problems with making Kahente a membet of the Croatoan tribe was the language. Unfortunately, their tribe has long been extinct and very few records of their language remains. Normally, when I make a new AC oc, I look up words or names in the character's native tongue meaning “eagle” or “bird” to fit the pattern of other AC protagonists, hence Aveza and Ava and Arnold and all that. However, since most Native languages are so poorly documented, I was unable to do this for Kahente. “Kahente” is actually a Kanien’kéha name meaning “before her time”. I liked the name well enough and so I settled for it. BUT I recently found quite a few decent sources relating to the Croatoan people and their language, including a vocabulary list. And as a person who aspires to be an anthropologist and a collector of cultures, I feel it is my duty to give Kahente a name that fits her tongue. And so I've decided to make it so that Kahente is not her birth name, it's Meeaquous, which is their word for “Cardinal”. And since most Native cultures were very very loose with names (names were hardly permanent to them and changed often based on how individuals saw themselves), it isn't much of a big deal from her perspective.
Part 2, The Lore:
Meeaquous first started going by the name Kahente around 1579. That year, the local Assassin Mentor, Wahunsenacawh, sent her parents far up north to aid the Haudenosaunee with the political turmoil that they were facing regarding the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. Meeaquous, who was brought along to observe and learn, made several friends while she stayed there, and learned a fair amount of their language and culture. Her Kanien’kehá:ka friends took to calling her Kahente, a name which in their language meant “before her time”. Meeaquous liked the name so much that she kept it, and would continue to keep it right up to her death.
Tragedy struck while the family was staying up north. In one of the final battles against the St. Lawrence Iroquoians, Kahente's father was killed by a Templar. Kahente witnessed the murder with her own eyes, despite her mother's attempts to pull the poor girl away to safety. Welling up with rage, Kahente grabbed the nearest blade and drove it into the Templar’s heart. Her first kill, her first true contribution to the Brotherhood. After the battle was over and the enemy territory was conquered, the family retrieved the body of her father and have him a proper send off into the afterlife. Kahente was given his hidden blade soon after, and she wielded it proudly ever since. Kahente and her mother returned to the south soon after. Kahente was raised and from then on was trained by her mother, who swore to do everything in her power to make sure her daughter grew up happily.

Wow, this is so cute
I like this innocent face of Kahente and how the bird (it is a cardinal, right?) is landing on his finger
And is that Aveza in the background?

Thanks
Yep, that's a cardinal ^^ Figured it would be a fitting bird to use in this picture given her name
And no, that's Kahente's mother. I don't really have a name for her
She seems to be enjoying her time outdoors with her daughter though ^^

Well, not really Though I do recall being heavily inspired by Connor when I created her character
Culturally And chronologically though, she's extremely different from Connor.
