I personally imagine him as his own Doctor. I always think of him as the one after the current actor. So, he's the thirteenth Doctor in my mind.
Although, whenever I try to do an impression of him, it does sound a bit Tennant-ish.

I stopped watching and loving Dr. Who because of Matt Smith...
David was unique and make the Doctor so funny.

I feel like Smith was a good actor, he just didn't have good material to work with. Same with Capaldi. I blame Steven Moffat more than anyone for the show's current descent. I agree though, Tennant was an amazing Doctor.
As for your question, I always thought of the background six as his companions. That being, Derpy, Vinyl, Octavia, Lyra, and Bon Bon.
