Description

The religion of Islam had its beginnings in the 7th century when a tradesman named Muhammad discovered a Precursor temple and received a message from the Isu member, the archangel Gabriel, who told him to begin citing the word of God.  Initially freaked out by the encounter, he was eventually convinced by his wife and friends to accept the role of prophet and thus Muhammad spread the word of Islam across the Middle East.  And within a few hundred years, the religion became the driving force of Middle Eastern religion and politics.  Muhammad's influence greatly threatened the people who regulated the trade systems in the area, and thus they expelled him from his hometown of Mecca.  However, Muhammad eventually came back with an armed force in 630 and reclaimed the city.  Islam continued to spread across Arabia and the Middle East and it became a powerfully influential force.

Muhammad preached his ideas of giving kindness, freedom, and justice to those around you.  The Assassins liked this idea and allowed it to spread but the Templars figured they could turn these words to their advantage.  This fight to influence the Islamic world continued well past Muhammad's death in 632 when both Assassins and Templars tried to gain the upper hand with Muhammad's various political successors.  To this day, the man who rightfully deserved to be Muhammad's successor is heavily debated in the Islamic world.

As the centuries went on, the Islamic Empire continued to spread across northern Africa and into Spain.  This would lead to a series of dynasties that tried to discriminate against non-Arab Muslims, making them rather upset.  After a series of revolts and overthrows over the years, the Islamic world, with the help of the Assassins, became much more free and thus a much nicer and stable place.  At the center of this was the inspiration to embrace and share cultures with the hundreds of foreigners that passed through.  This mixing of ideas led to a massive scientific, political, and philosophical golden age that was a stark contrast to the rest of Europe, which was stuck in what is now called the Dark Ages.

Islamic scholars translated ancient texts of famous philosophers and religious leaders.  Major medical advances were invented by the Muslims.  And mathematics flourished, so much so that the base ten number system we use today is based on the one they used back then, and thus we call our numbers Arabic numerals.  The Muslims even adopted the concept of zero, which is arguably one of the most important inventions in all of mathematical history.  Meanwhile, in Spain, medical and agricultural advances went so far that Spain became a paradise for several people and thus hundreds wanted to come visit.

It was a great time for the Assassins, who did all they could to keep the Templars away so that this cultural boom wouldn't be hindered by their power grab.  However, the Assassins’ hold on Arabia and its surrounding lands was almost destroyed when the Mongols came in and invaded in the 13th century.  Thus opening the vacuum up again for the Templars to try and use the lands for their own gain.

Very cool design, and I love the setting. If you want a good overview of Islamic history, the youtube channel CaspianReport has a series of videos that I'd highly recommend.

Even though this would be a difficult setting to get right, I think if any series could pull it off, it'd be Assassin's Creed. I mean, the first game was released at the same time as a slew of Military shooters about Westerners invading the Middle East, with Muslim Antagonists, and yet AC had you playing as a member of an islamic organization whose main enemies were Western Invaders, and they pulled it off with hardly any controversy.
And we know they can represent different cultures in a respectful manner; just look at all the care that was put into AC3's representation of the Kanienkehaka!

Thanks ^^ I'll be sure to check that channel out sometime

I agree.  I feel like they'd pull it off really well.  Personally, I absolutely love Middle Eastern culture.  Every aspect from their customs to their beliefs to their art and literature just draws me in.  It is rather unfortunate how western countries villainize them just because of a relatively small group of extremists.  That's a big reason why I like the AC games: they don't restrict themselves to political borders, they focus on more important things in people.

Yeah! I love middle eastern culture too. It's weird, people always tell me that I shouldn't, because I'm of Indian descent, and India has been invaded by Muslims quite a few times, but I feel like that's just an ignorant line of thinking. Honestly, Middle Eastern culture is so underrated, and I hate how people get weirded out when I say that.

On a related note, I really hope the rumours about the next game being in Egypt are true. AC works so well with the Aesthetic of the Middle East, and I think Egypt would mesh beautifully with the style of the first game.

^^ ikr?  People are always baffled when I tell them I like Middle Eastern culture too.  Though, grant it, that's probably mostly due to American war propaganda spreading its lies.  Oh well.  The best we can do is look past the politics and educate ourselves properly.

It would certainly make for an interesting game.  Admittedly, I've never been much of a fan of ancient Egypt.  But if anything can get me into it, it's Assassin's Creed.

I never used to be into the idea of an Ancient Egyptian setting, mostly because I didn't know if they could pull off a pre-Hashashin setting, but the more I've thought about it, the more perfect a setting it seems. Like, going way back in time is just what the franchise needs right now, in my opinion, there hasn't been a game in Africa before, and the Aesthetic of Ancient Egypt would really bring the series back to the atmosphere I loved in the first game, if pulled off correctly.

Personally, a game set in Egypt really appeals to me because it would give me a foothold to start learning some ancient Egyptian history and culture, since they tended to skip over a lot of it in school.  It seems like an interesting time period, and I'd like to learn more about it.

It's funny, I actually had naught but passive interest in pre-Medieval Egypt prior to the supposed leak. I mean, I've been eating up all the scraps of information I could find about 14th Century Egypt, but I only started seriously looking into ancient Egypt in an attempt to find all the possible settings for the rumoured game. Fun Fact, they paid the workers who built the Pyramids in Beer. I mean, they built the Pyramids long before the game is likely to be set, but still, I love that bit of trivia.

If they actually did this as a setting they would need to be careful.
They wouldn't be able to separate the Assassin's and Templars into the Sunni and Shia.
Even tho I would picture Ali as a Templar
Aisha could be an Assassin and so could Abu-bakr
The only probably would be they wouldn't be able to show Muhammad in person, because of the honouring of the faith. But word of mouth can always be a good way to show his presence very much in AC1.
It would be an interesting and cool setting explore
It would also be cool to see the battle of Camel and the Kaaba (I would love to climb it, even tho it would be offensive, I still wanna climb it XD )

I agree, it would be touchy.  I tried my best not to label any religious figures as Assassin or Templar specifically, especially since I myself only have a vague knowledge of the Muslim faith  (most of what I know comes from watching Crash Course XD).  I feel like a game like this would probably be set a few centuries after Muhammad died, when the area's culture and science were at its peak.

Wow, that's a lot of information I just took in!
Is it partially true? Love how you tied it in with the Assassins and Templars! so smarttt
And I really adore the background in this picture ~

^^ Yep, that's the true history (minus the Assassin and Templar stuff)
This is actually one of my favorite historical time periods.  I really love all the culture that spawned in this time and place.
