Description
July 2, 1988; Cleveland, Ohio“Tim wake up!”
“Hu-wuh?” Tim said as he was shook out of his blissful sleep in the passenger seat of the car.
“We're here!” Jen said. “The Hall of Fame! And I don't see any Abstergo trucks either, so I think we beat them here!”
“Five more minutes, mom,” Tim moaned as he rolled back towards the window.
Jen rolled her eyes. She dug into her bag and pulled out a cassette tape labeled ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’, which she promptly slid into the car radio. She turned the machine on, turned the dial up on full blast, and smirked over at her snoozing brother as she hit play.
The sound blasted out of the speakers and shook Tim straight out of his daze. “Gah!” he said as he jumped and his ears thumped while his sister banged her head and laughed. He pulled a face and rubbed his head before shutting off the radio.
“The look on your face was priceless!” Jen laughed.
“The look on your face was priceless,” Tim parroted in a mocking voice.
“Aww, did I interrupt your beauty sleep?”
“Yes.”
Jen gave a mocking pout and patted his shoulder. Tim couldn't help but laugh. “I hate you,” he said.
“Feeling’s mutual,” Jen laughed back before she opened up her door and hopped out into the night air. Tim shook his head and followed her lead.
They looked up at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame building.
“Awesome!” Jen said.
“Shhh,” Tim whispered.
“Don't shh me!”
“The Templars might hear us!”
“I told you, the Templars aren't here yet.”
Tim gave her a look and then spun her around to face one of the parking lots of the place. There were three vehicles sitting in the dark, each with the Abstergo Industries logo slapped on their sides.
“...Welp,” Jen said.
“No Templars, huh?”
“You wanna get hit again?”
“I wanna get this Pick of Eden thing and head back to California before you get the chance to blame mom's missing car on me.”
Jen laughed. “Then come on! Let's get in there and swipe it before Abstergo grabs it!”
She jogged her way towards the building with her brother in tow.
“Any ideas on how to get inside?” Jen asked.
Tim put his finger on his chin as he looked up and down the building looking for options. “Alright,” he said as he scanned. “I think I got it. We'll climb up the east side of the building and make it all the way to the roof. Then once we're there we'll hop into the air vents and scurry around in there until we finally find a hatch we can enter though. We'll have to stealth around the halls a bit until we find the emergency stairwells where we can make our way down and-”
“Oh hey the front door's unlocked.”
“I- huh?”
Tim spun around to see that his sister had walked on over to the front door, which was in fact, unlocked. Tim blinked in disbelief. “I… uh…”
“Well come on! The Pick of Eden ain't gonna rob itself!”
She darted inside, and after a defeated hrmph, Tim rushed to catch up and follow.
“Watch out for lasers,” Jen warned Tim as the two of them slowly and quietly paced the halls of the Hall of Fame, taking in all the musical memorabilia as they passed it all by looking for their prize.
“There aren't gonna be lasers. That's only in the movies.”
“Or maybe that's what they want you to think.”
“Or maybe there's not lasers.”
“You're no fun.”
They kept walking as stealthily as they could, taking in all the guitars and photos and all the other legendary items that had defined the past two decades. They peaked around every corner, both keeping an eye out for the Pick of Eden and the Templar guards who were trying to beat them to it. It wasn't long before they spotted a few of their adversaries. They were all dressed in the black Abstergo nightwatch gear that a lot of their goons pranced about in. Jen and Tim kept low and hidden and stuck their hidden blades into a few guards that were too much of an obstacle to just sneak around. They followed the guards until they came into a large room filled with shining guitars and amplifiers, and most importantly of all: a wall on the other side of the room that was covered in specially designed picks, one of which was glowing gold with patterns that matched exactly to the descriptions of the Pieces of Eden that the siblings had grew up hearing. Tim and Jen gasped in joy as they took cover behind an exhibit. That had to be it. The Pick of Eden. The downside was, it seemed they had arrived just a bit later than they would've preferred.
A man stood in front of the wall, dressed in a stark black coat and a red shirt underneath, walking with a cane even though he only looked as if he was in his early 20s. He stood, eyeing the picks while his two guards stood watch behind him.
“Mr. Morgenster, why not just grab it and go?” one of them asked him.
He held his hand up. “Did I give you permission to question me?”
“I… no.”
“Then kindly shut up.”
“I… uh… yes sir.”
Morgenster nodded and looked back to the wall. He was eyeing the Pick of Eden, pondering something. He reached into his coat and pulled out a can of spray. After a few quick shakes he let out a little cloud that he spread across the wall. As the cloud floated against the wall, hints of red began to appear in parallel lines that formed a sort of cage in front of all the picks.
“See! I told you there were lasers!” Jen excitedly whispered to her brother.
“Shhhhh!” Tim said through his teeth as they ducked further back behind their cover.
Morgenster gently put his spray can back into its place in his pocket and followed the laser grid until he found their sources. He reached into his briefcase and pulled out a small device which he seemed to hook up to the grid and used it to shut it down entirely. He gave an evil smirk and walked back to the pick wall before gently taking the Pick of Eden off of it's little shelf. It glowed brightly and maliciously in his hands. The air around it almost seemed to crack and warp. “Long time no see, little guy,” he said to it as he gazed into its light.
“Crap he's got the Pick!” Tim whispered. “What do we do?”
Jen shrugged and stood up. “Kick his ass,” she declared, and then she stepped out into the open before Tim could start frantically protesting.
“Hey douchebag!” Jen called out. The Templars immediately spun around. “You know stealing it wrong, right?” Jen joked. “I mean come on, you could've just bought a pick from one of the stores back in Los Angeles.”
“Another Assassin come to try to thwart my plans?” Morgenster said, an arrogant smirk across his face. “You know, I'm getting real sick of kids like you trying to put on your big kid pants by thinking you can take me on.”
“Hey, I just graduated!” Tim said as he stepped out and joined his sister.
“Oh good. Two idiots. More clean-up afterwards but at least it's more fun a challenge.”
Jen smiled and cracked her knuckles. “Look I'll cut it straight with you, pal. We need that Pick you've got there pretty badly, and you can give it to us the easy way or the hard way.”
“In my experience, the hard way is the more fun way.” He turned to his guards. “Kill them.”
The two goons acted right away, grabbing their batons and running forward to attack. Jen and Tim posed as they flicked out their hidden blades and beginning the fight. The guards swung their weapons, and the siblings ducked down, dodging the blows and sliding between their foes’ legs. They hopped back to their feet and spin kicked the two goons from behind. The goons recovered and came back around for another swing. The siblings countered with their hidden blades, rolling over their opponents and grabbing them by the arms to swing them into the shelves. The goons groaned in pain before blacking out in the pile of shelf pieces.
“Well that was surprisingly easy,” Jen remarked.
“You know those shelves are extremely expensive,” Morgenster suddenly commented as he stepped forward with his cane. “I'm afraid I'm gonna have to make you pay.”
The siblings spun around to fight him, both sides wearing equally smug grins on their faces. “Sorry, we're a bit low on cash,” Tim said, cracking his knuckles. “Looks like you're the one that's gonna have to pay.”
The siblings charged at the Templar, only to be swatted back by a strike of his cane.
“Really?” Morgenster mocked. “Just running in full force like that? I expected at least a bit more skill, I mean come on.”
“Yeah? Well how about this!” Tim declared. He sprung to his feet, picking up one of the guitars as he did and strumming down hard on the strings. The sound carried straight into the amplifiers of the room and blasted out of the speakers, the sound strong enough and loud enough to cause Morgenster to stumble backwards and trip.
“He really fell head over heels for you,” Jen joked.
“I'm getting sick of these puns…” Morgenster said bitterly as he tried to stand back up.
“Aw, but laughter is the best medicine!” Tim said.
“Enough!” Morgenster reached back into his pocket and from it he withdrew the Pick of Eden. “I don't have time for this… If I lose here than I won't be able to try again for another 28 years!”
“That's oddly specific,” Jen commented.
Morgenster simply frowned and held the Pick high. The device started glowing and pulsing as the air around it seemed to somehow crack, like the fabric of reality itself was somehow shattering like glass. The cracks grew bigger and bigger. “So long, kids!” Morgenster said. “I've got a date with destiny!”
“How about a little song before you go?” Tim said as his fingers plunged down onto the strings of his guitar once again and music blasted out the speakers. The force of the sound yet again sent their enemy flying backwards, causing him to drop the Pick as he fell.
“Jen grab it!” Tim shouted. His sister nodded and she sprinted forward, swiping the Pick off the floor and running back behind the speakers.
“No!” Morgenster shouted as he scrambled back to his feet and ran at them.
“I think he wants an encore,” Jen told Tim. Tim smirked and nodded and slammed his hands back down onto the strings once more, blasting Morgenster back into the wall with an almost cartoonish thud. Tim finished a quick little melody for style sake and then dropped the guitar. Jen tucked the Pick into her jacket and the two sprinted back down the hall, using their hidden blades to get rid of any guards that tried to get in the way of their escape. They plowed out the front door and sprinted right back to their car, hopping into their seats and immediately revving up the engines.
“Jen hurry! They're coming!” Tim said as he saw Morgenster and a few of his goons charging out the door barking orders.
“I'm going! I'm going!” Jen said as she slammed her foot on the gas pedal and burned rubber. The tires squealed as they kicked up chunks of asphalt and the car lurched forward. The siblings took off into the night, not even looking back. They drove down the road, taking a few turns and shortcuts until they couldn't see anyone trying to pursue them anymore. Once they were sure they were in the clear, they made their way straight to the interstate and eventually allowed themselves to lean back and give a sigh of relief.
“Hey! We actually did it!” Tim said. “We got the Pick!”
“Hell yeah!” Jen cheered, taking the Pick out and observing it while she drove through the night. “Now let's see that jerk try to kick us out!”
“Assuming the Templars don't catch us on our way back to California first.”
Jen gave him a passive wave. “Tim Tim Tim,” she said, putting the Pick back in her pocket. “They won't be able to catch us. That's what the gas pedal is for.”
With an adrenaline-filled smirk, she slammed her foot down hard on that exact pedal and sped the car down the road that led them back to California.
