Those stone slabs there to the right are an official protected heritage site. When I say protected I mean they haven't been torn down yet for an apartment block or strip mall. So while they still are there the people who live in the little alley way, street side noodle shops and all just ignore them for the most part as its become part of their daily life. The irony of China is somewhat amusing. It places so much emphasis on promoting its culture to the western world, but only in letting it see what it wants the world to see, The Great Wall, for example. And yet, the very people and history and monuments like this are what made Chinese culture. Yet they would rather see them being torn down to make way for a new high-rise apartment then preserving them to remember their heritage. Im not saying all China is keen for this modernisation, I guess I'm just sad to see and hear of much of old china being obliterated from the world before I have had a chance to see it. Your photography helps me see a side to China that I probably, and sadly, wont see much of in my lifetime other then the over crowded photo-oppertunity tourist sites dotted here and there.
Long story short, I love this photo. It is good to here that it does at least have some protection, even if not permanent.
