Also, why do I see lots of people putting an asterisk after trans? Does that have some special meaning? Or is it to show a wildcard?

That way it can stand for all types of trans-being. Transsexual. Transgender. Transidentity. Gender-non-conformity. Bigender.
I don't want to shut out people from the message just because I am one of them, the rest can feel just the same. Therefore I put the asterisk up behind it. (:
