Each Pigmask starts as a private, and rises a class if they are chosen for leading duties.
Both Luke and Marth were privates too.
When they were younger, Luke was victim of abusive parents as well as abusive "friends".
His parents didn't accept the fact that he found men more interesting than women, but biggest subject for his parents disappointment was the fact that he wasn't interested that much on joining army.
During that time Marth, who pretty much took him under his wing, kept eye on him and protected him when needed. Their friendship began to be as strong as bond between brothers.

Marth being older than Luke, he needed to go to army before Luke. When Luke started to realize that Marth was going to leave, he started to feel anxious and depressed. He was afraid that all the beating would start again after Marth would leave.
He didn't know what to do, where to go, how to survive if Marth would leave him alone.

Before Marth left, he told Luke to keep on going, no matter what. He'd be waiting for him at the army. He'd just need to stand by himself for few years.
Marth knew that saying that was easier than be done, but thats all he was really able to do at the moment.
Luke would need to stand on his own feet and push going foward.

Luke did survive to army and was reunited with Marth, but he went through lots of bullying.
