Description
Anyone that knows me, knows canines are not my strong point in my art. But its time to break away from some comforts and discover beauty in things I didn't see beauty in before..and discover for myself other things I want to portray in my art.So my latest challenge is figuring out canines..and namely what aspects of canines I want to depict that I find beautiful..unique..etc.
So here are a buncha newer practice sketches, all done without ref. So there are mistakes to be had, however, the goal is..draw without any aiding ref and then afterwards go back and look at photos of wolves..etc..and track down the mistakes I made so I can ammend them in future pieces.
As always, thank you for stopping by. You can see more sketches and usually larger than these, at my lj account:

My inspiration comes from all around me. There really isn't one single thing I could say contributes the most. Sometimes a kind word from someone is enough to inspire a picture..sometimes a joke..sometimes a beautiful picture..or an intense sunset. The list goes ever on. I find I create best when I am drawing to music or a film I love .
As for tips..draw for yourself. Don't draw to stand out in the crowd, that will just keep you looking over your shoulder and not looking ahead. Draw from your heart and soul and that alone will set you apart because no one can recreate your soul..and as such your vision of the world.

Lovely stab at the canid family.
Well done, the anatomy seems very probably, actually to what I can see pretty accurate.
It kind of looks like this collage tells a story of sorts.

How could I not fav this... I always like your pencil sketches best. IF you could call this sketches, seriously. Do you always finish your sketches like this? I'd rather call them drawings.

The only thing I could find possibly wrong would be the snouts are off, but only fractionally -seriously tiny margin! They are wonderful!! And I love all the angles you are trying

If this is your weak point...it must not be very bad, because these are very good.

i like the character in the upper lefthand corner. the spotted husky type dog. and the laughing wolf in the bottem lefthand corner. ya know, these are pretty good for being your weak point.

Great collection of sketches!
And, hey, the things YOU call 'sketches' always blow me away! They are already so detailed and seem so PERFECT to me!
You're so critical with yourself... but then I guess this is the only way you can better yourself time and time again, right?
Trying new things is always a good thing, I guess. It keeps your mind flexible, leads you to new, exciting paths and gives you the chance to learn some interesting new stuff!
Your canines here are most lovely! The poses and faces are so lifelike, expressive and often funny, they really do have spirit! And I love those little dragon-sprite-thingies! They are CUTE!
All in all, this is a definite

These guys rock as far as basic anatomy, better than I could do without loooots of time and practice. I love your art!

You consider this a weak point? Great drawings... I especially love the aviator.
How long did these take you, on average?

balaa In reply to Treyos [2007-02-16 16:08:57 +0000 UTC]
anywhere from 15 minutes up to an hour..depending on the number of distractions at that given point..and I ensure I have at the very minimum 3 distractions.

Well, if there were no distractions you would've finished way too quickly and then you would've been bored.

Without reference? These are a WEAK point? gah, you sell yourself short! you put many artists to shame with your work, and these are quite good. Very realistic looking, but with the humanoid-type stature .. I think that's the word I'm looking for. The movements and poses look really natural, the dogs are more dog than human, as opposed to the other way around, which is something I haven't seen before in anthropomorfic art. Good job!

the winged wolf is also my fav. if you want some stuff in regards to anatomy though - unless it was on purpose - his legs are too thick in proportion with his body and his tail is too short..but it doesnt make him any less gorgeous..i just wanted to point it out because you said this was like...practice.

These are lovely. ^^ The winged quadruped caught my eye, 'cause it looked rather familiar, and I digged out of my old scraps this [link] .
What a coincidence, eh? Though yours is, of course, awesome, and mine is sucky.
But right down to the extra-long claws, too.

The winged wolf with the runes on his body is my absolute favourite . Awesome sketches, you wouldn't say canines aren't your stronger point
.
What's with the little winged dragon creatures? Is there more about them, or are they just random creatures?
