Starting from Late Antiquity, through Early Middle Ages to the formation of "feudal" (complicated word to use historically) armies, "signifer" was the name given to the standard-bearer. The ensign had an important symbolical meaning.

Inspired by the Welsh poem "Cad Goddeau".

The "Cad Goddeau" is a poem, part of the Welsh "Book of Taliesin", where the magician Gwydion calles to life the trees of a forest - as if they were a dormant army - to fight against Bran the Blessed. ☘
The "Book of Taliesin" was likely written in the X th century, due to the Christian patina.
The poem is famous for its enigmatic symbolism, for which many interpretations have been proposed.
