may i ask what type of clay you used for sculpting this guy?

batchix In reply to AirshipFelicity [2012-09-28 05:18:09 +0000 UTC]

I actually sculpted his head out of super sculpey and apoxy sculpt. I usually use paperclay, but the way he's shaped, it was easier to use a much harder clay. Once I got him to the point that he was starting to get brittle I cast him and continued working on the new head with more apoxy sculpt. :3

hmm, ive tried using sculpey for bjds, but i just never liked the outcome...i could never get them as smooth and perfect as you have done here >,< ill have to try apoxy sculpt, never tried it.
curiously, will you be selling parts of these guys when your done with them? because one i love turians, and two id love a 3d reffrence for sculpting (im making a full on turian suit, including an articulating mask) and i work better off of 3d reffrences than 2d ((totally pre-ordered the garrus figurine so i could have something amazingly sodlid details to go off of >,<))
either way, this guy is gorgeious!

He's been sanded, that's why he's smooth. X3 I hate sanding SS, it takes forEVER. That's why I use paperclay most of the time. It sands super fast. Unfortunately I can't get a lot of the surface detail into it that I can with Super Sculpey- so for the turian I needed something that I could sculpt additively.

I have a few of the heads laying around if you'd like just the head. It's the first version seen here. The head isn't quite screen accurate(made the fringe/spines too short and the head isn't long enough from the side). Just send me a note. :3

I will be! I actually have the head done, but I need to do the body armor, hands and feet yet. I'll post it here when I get them finished.

How do you make the little area inside of the back half of his head?
And how in the world do you make the little pieces that allow them to fasten together?
These little things on dolls and toys always puzzled and stumped me.
Like if you've ever played around with a nendroid.....HOW DO THEY MAKE THESE PARTS?!!!
Your answer would solve an age old mystery for me and very much help me when I want to make my own toys, because honestly, I have no idea where I could even begin to look for information or how I'd find the knowledge to figure it out on my own.
The fact that you told me what clays I should use already opened a world of possibilities for me and make my goal seem a lot closer now.

Not to mention the method of making joints for any type of toy or doll just eludes me every time.

making it hollow? I make a cardboard box out of cereal board and then put super sculpey over it.

How I make that round divit for the magnet to sit in? I dremel out each half and put two pieces of fresh clay in(one on each side), then I put two magnets in it and squeeze it like a sandwich. I take the magnets out before i bake it. Then I do a hell of a lot of clean up that's just adding a little clay, pushing the parts together, and baking.

For the notches I take a round dremel part and drill out where I want the notch to be. Then i cover it in plastic, press a bit of clay there and put the other part against it... and hope for the best.

that probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but the engineering side of dolls is really hard to explain. >_<;

I imagine it would be complicated to explain over deviantart. XD
I can see how you'd make the head hollow and somewhat see the magnets part....I didn't even know you were using magnets. W-what's "dremel"? And a notch is....part of the joints?

I hope you don't mind my many questions.
I can be kind of a ditz. @n@
But I really wanna get to know this stuff. The making of toys is something that's always fascinated me.

batchix In reply to TheSkippyone [2011-10-02 06:19:14 +0000 UTC]

Dremel is a rotary tool, you can get them in most hardware stores. :3 I have two... one that is adjustable speed plug-in(so it has more RPMs) and one is battery that's slower that i use for delicate work.

The notches are little places where the doll fits together and sort of locks. it helps keep the parts together. I usually make elbow and knee locks to keep the doll from snapping into a bent position.

Do you have a BJD? it's easier to understand the jointing on one if you've got one to poke at.

TheSkippyone In reply to batchix [2011-10-14 01:46:15 +0000 UTC]

What sort of delicate work do you use the slower dremel for?

And I think I sorta understand what a notch is.
If I understand correctly, I think one of my dolls might have one.
I imagine it's the little nick that keeps the two torso halves from going in odd directions.

batchix In reply to TheSkippyone [2011-10-14 02:46:03 +0000 UTC]

I use it for cleaning up faces, especially around eyewells... and for doing the lines on machina. less RPMs means i can hold it a little more steady.

Oh, okay. I see what you mean now.
I shall keep that in mind if I get to use a dremel. XD
