Description Tanya always hated flying, but who doesn’t? It was on this particular trip she had a rather bad experience but it turned out OK in the end.

First let’s talk about Tanya, explain some things.

1) She’s tall for a woman, about 5’10 which makes things awkward.

2) She’s claustrophobic, which makes flying difficult, but manageable.

3) She’s shy, but trying to overcome this.

Late, as usual. The cab is late, the security gate is long, and there’s no time to grab a snack before being forced into a tin can with wings for the next inevitable stop. Tanya was on her way from a business trip in Calgary CA, feeling good about a large sale she had made when she encountered two women near the airport bar that stood out.

They stood out because each of them had both of their arms in casts. A shoulder spica cast for one side and a long arm cast on the other. She had never seen such things before. They looked cumbersome and awkward. Tanya could empathize with the 2 women somewhat as she had her own experience with a plaster cast in college. She had fallen from her moped and broke her arm in 2 places, requiring a thick plaster arm cast be worm for 8 weeks.

The two women, a young woman with blonde hair had her left arm in a bulky shoulder spica cast engulfed the entire left arm, totally encasing it from fingertips to the shoulder. The cast was flexed at a right angle at the elbow and positioned in a horizontally, leaving the upright. To maintain this awkward angle, a bar connected the arm to the torso.

Similarly, the other woman wore the same cast on her right arm but with one difference – her cast, rather than pointing out forward was placed upward, like she was raising her hand in a classroom. Tanya couldn’t help but stare in awe at the two woman, awkwardly standing maintaining their balance. They had their backs to Tanya, but this didn’t bother her. It was time to shine! Rather than be her usual quiet self, Tanya decided to introduce herself.

“That looks very awkward to fly in” chirped Tanya. Stupid, so STUPID, lame intro. I’m bad at this, she thought.

The blonde woman turned to Tanya and spoke.

“Oh you have no idea! And I feel like a sardine in a can on the plane too!”.

“We have that in common. I hate flying so much, it’s such an awful experience. But then who doesn’t?” said Tanya.

The other woman, now aware of the new conversation pivoted towards Tanya and the other woman. She had a scrunched look of pain on her face as if the movement was a bit rough.

The other woman chimed in:

“I don’t mind the airport, I just hate the service. Everyone’s in a hurry and service is always terrible.”.

“I’m Eve by the way, and this is my sister Joanna.” said the blond.

“I’m Tanya, a pleasure to make your acquaintance.” said Tanya.

Tanya reached out to shake Eve’s hand but then realized half way how dumb that was. Ooops.

“It’s OK, happens all the time” said Joanna, smirking at Tanya.

“Where are you from?”

“Santa Fe”

“Wow me too!” said Tanya.

“Where do you go to college? Eve and I went to Berkeley.”

“Usu in Utah, not nearly as nice as Berkeley, but friendly enough” said Tanya.

Tanya instantly liked the pair. The 3 talked for a little while with Tanya telling the two about her life and the other 2 talking about theirs. Eve and Joanna turned out to be trust fund kids. They had been all over the world doing all sorts of activities but had a deep love for winter sports. They were just in at a resort in Banff.

“I love to snowboard, and my sis loves to ski, but we’re kind of bad at it. We’re both a tad...accident prone.“ Eve said

“And that leads to trouble. A lot of flights aren’t all that accommodating. Last time, the flight attendants and I had a heck of a time trying to strap Joanna into her seat while she was in a full body cast. It wasn’t her fault!”

Joanna butts in, interrupting her sister before she could continue

“No Eve, that was your fault. We should have stayed in Italy to heal up a bit before going home.”

“How about that time you had to sit in the middle row with the double long leg casts and that huge spreader bar? You had to sit in the middle row and I couldn’t get comfortable on either side” said Joanna.

Before they could continue, the flight attendant began to announce: “Disabled, expecting mothers, and veterans, please board the plane at this time”.

“Oh that’s us!” said Eve.

“See you around Tanya, here or there!”.

While the couple walked away, Tanya noticed they were getting on her flight. What a coincidence she thought.

When Tanya’s row was finally called she entered the plane. Full flight, as usual.

“Seat...7...B” thought Tanya as she scanned the rows.

Low and behold, there was Joanna and Eve, same row. Joanna, seeing Tanya, tried to wave with her “free” arm, but instantly regretted it as her face scrunched together in pain. Tanya appears to have the seat between the two casted women.

“So, looks like we have a chance to really get to know each other” said Tanya, awkwardly.

“Sorry, full flight, and these were the last 2 seats. We really need to get home. I hope you don’t mind” said Joanna.

“We’ll make it work” said Tanya with an uneasy smile. She wanted to make friends, but this was a little weird.

Eve, on the aisle seat got up, awkwardly, trying her best to maintain her balance. In doing so, she banged her shoulder cast against the woman to her left, emitting a light yelp of pain while doing so.

“Sorry Ma’am” said eve to the woman.

"It’s OK, I’ve had a similar experience in high school taking the school bus.” said the fellow passenger.

"We’ve had worse though. Have you ever had the pleasuring of wearing a full body cast?” said Joanna?

“Or flying in them!” said Eve talking over her sister. Joanna rolled her eyes.

Tanya settled in her seat and tried to get comfortable. There was a problem however. Both women had their shoulder spica casts facing Tanya’s shoulders. She was trapped between the two. She couldn’t help but start to feel extra claustrophobic. She out her legs together and placed her hands hands between her legs. “going to be a long flight” she thought.

Joanna in the window seat asked Tanya “Can you please buckle me in? Sorry to be a bother.”

Tanya obliged, awkwardly maneuvered her head around Joanna’s spica cast and clasped her seat belt.

“I get through these by sleeping, wake me up when we’re about to land” said Joanna.

Eve, rolled her eyes, while shifting around trying to get comfortable. A losing battle at this point, but still worth a try.

It wasn’t a long flight, 5 hours, but still pretty long sandwiched between two pieces of plaster connected to two women. Eve and Tanya made small talk for a few minutes before asking as kindly as she could about placing the complimentary head phones the airline had provided into her ears so she could watch the in flight movie playing above her seat. Again Tanya obliged. She didn’t want to be rude and felt sympathy, having broken bones in the past herself. From here on the flight was quiet. Tanya was also able to put on her own earphones and watch the in-flight movie as well. “Curse of Friday The 13th”. It looked interesting.

About halfway into the flight, Joanna nudged Tanya with her not so immobile arm cast.

“I know we just met, but I need a favor. Kind of a big one one, but I would really appreciate it Tanya. I feel like I can trust you”

“What do you need? I can try…”. Tanya assumed Joanna just wanted something scratched.

“I need...to..go..like soon. And I’m not in a position to do it myself. Can you help a sister our?” she said. Her face blushed.

Tanya had a conundrum here. She wanted to be friendly, but this was getting a little weird. It wasn’t like she didn’t want to see Joanna naked, but she had barely met her. But something about her face made it seem like she could be trusted. A gentle friendliness that showed no ill-will or contempt. Tanya agreed.

“Ok, let’s work this out. Eve, we need you to move.” said Tanya.

Eve’s eyes were closed. She was watching the movie, but apparently had fallen asleep. Tanya removed Eve’s headphones and nudged Eve in her arm, but she didn’t wake. Next Tanya knocked on Eve’s casted chest. No response. Finally, she gently shook Eve. Eve woke up moaning in pain.

“Waaaa? What now?”

“Out of the way sis, I gotta go real bad” said Joanna.

Eve collected herself, nodded and started to get up.

*bang*

Eve had smacked her spica cast against a flight attendant's drink / snack cart. Eve again moaned in pain. A flight attendant behind the cart apologized and moved the cart, allowing Eve room to get up.

“Sorry” said the attendant. "I've been there before, I used to be a mountain biker".

Eve got up slowly and cautiously, trying again not to hurt herself. Tanya followed and attempted to help Joanna unwedge herself from the window seat. Without too much effort, Joanna was free. Joanna led the way to the restroom at the front of the aircraft. For those who don’t know, American restrooms on airplanes are small. For someone like Tanya, they’re especially small and she feels extra nervous in them.

Upon reaching the restroom, Joanna went inside. She tried to turn around to sit on the toilet seat, but the room was too small. She banged her long arm cast against the wall in doing so.

“Yowwwch. That hurt. Maybe the other way?” she said.

Joanna carefully stepped backwards, turned around, then entered the bathroom. This time, Tanya decided she would help Joanna out. She held onto Joanna and guided her backwards. Looking down, she knew that Joanna would probably either spend an hour removing her pants / panties herself, or she could move things along.

“Mind if I…?”

“If you could, please!”

Tanya removed Joanna’s pants and panties and closed the door behind her. Joanna sat backwards and did her business. When she was finished, Joanna didn’t ask for help, instead choosing some semblance of independence. With a bit of difficulty, she managed to get her trousers back on and stand back up.

“All done, can you help open the door please? Said Joanna.

Tanya opened the door, grabbed Joanna by her chest and helped move her back.

*clunk*

Joanna’s face scrunched in pain. She had banged her left arm cast against the door, but caught her arm cast in the folding hinge on the bathroom door.

“Ow ow ow ow! I can’t move, it’s stuck! Help help help!”.

Tanya, holding onto Joanna told her to calm down and attempted to maneuver Joanna’s wedged long arm cast from the folding bathroom door. With a bit of pulling and strength, the arm started to free.

“….Just about...got it!” said Tanya.

*BEEP*

A flight attended announces over the intercom: “All passengers, we will be experiencing some turbulence. Please return to your seats with your seat belts fastened until the sign goes off.”

"Not now, please not now" thought Tanya.

*rumble* *rumble* *rumble*

The airplane began to shake.

“Got y----aaaagh!!!”

*thud* *crack* *crunch* *crack*

“Waaahhhh!!!”

Several things had just happened in rapid succession.

1) Tanya had almost managed to free Joanna’s arm cast from being wedged in the door when the turbulence hit. The force caused Joanna unwedge her stuck arm cast from the door, but crack Joanna’s long arm cast during so.

2) Upon being unstuck by door, Joanna fell forward and Tanya backwards with her. Tanya, attempting to sturdy herself awkwardly shifted her weight on her right ankle, making a cracking noise in doing so. Instinctively she also put her arm down as to protect herself from the fall. The arm, landing behind her landed with a loud crack. Tanya also banged her head, causing her to pass out.

3) Joanna, with nothing to stop her self from falling forward was helpless and landed on her left hand pointing outward from her shoulder spica, breaking the hand and a few fingers.

The events happened so fast that Joanna hardly had time to process them. By the time she did, 3 flight attendants were helping her to her feet while another was tending to a knocked out Tanya.

“Is there a doctor on board?” Called out one of the attendants.

**********************

Tanya woke up from what felt like a dream. She was groggy, her throat felt dry and saw white all around her. It took her a minute to realize where she was – a hospital bed.

Not more than a minute later, a doctor entered the room and explained her the situation.

“Hi Tanya, I’m doctor Johnson. I’m sure you have a lot of questions, so I’ll try and brief you on what’s going on.”

“owwww” said Tanya.

“First off, we’re not in New Mexico. Your plane had to make an emergency landing in a small town in Colorado to get things sorted out. “

Tanya tried to get up, but was stopped by a large wave of pain, only moaning in response.

“Hold on, we’ll get to that. Ok, so I’m told by the other passengers that before the accident, you were helping 2 other women get around. You helped one to the bathroom and she fell on top of you after some turbulence.”

Tanya remembered that part, and nodded in response, though she was still groggy. She now noticed she had a neighbor to her right. It was the Eve!

The doctor continued:

“So she fell on you and you broke your right ankle in 2 places. We’ve applied a plaster cast for that. I’m sorry we don’t have fiber glass, but we’re a small town with a small hospital.”

“Next you also seem to have broken your right arm rather badly. The humorous, ulna, radius, and scapula are all broken. Not enough to require surgery, but pretty badly fractured. We’ve had to cast up pretty much your entire arm and shoulder. It’s called a shoulder spica. You kind of look like your neighbors here”.

The doctor pointed to Joanna on her left. Joanna moaned in response.

She was in a hospital bed just like hers. She was in a half sitting position and it looked like she had a brand new shoulder spica from what she saw from last time. This one covered all of her fingers and her thumb. Her other arm looked like it was in a brand new cast as well and it too covered all of Joanna’s fingers and her thumb.

Tanya was similarly in a half sitting position. She looked over at her right arm, It looked just like Eve’s arm. Same size, same plaster, same rod to support the thing, pointed the same way. She sighed. She then looked over at her right leg. It was suspended by a traction sling, hanging about a foot off of the bed. The cast went from just below her knee to the base of her stubby toes. There was also a bandage wrapped around her head as well.

“Nice to see you two awake. I’m sorry about my sis here. She’s usually less careless and self reliant.” said Eve.

“Owwww, I need to get home. What am I supposed to do now? I...where are we anyways?” moaned Tanya.

“Shhh, it’s OK, we’ve got you’re back. We’re both from the same town remember? We’ll get you home in one piece. We’re in...Pagosa Springs? I think that’s what they said when we landed.” said Eve.

“Uggh, can we drive? I hate flying.” said Tanya.
