Apparently, according to some MLP comic books that have been stated to be ''cannon'', at some point in her past she wasn't an alicorn.
Though, I think it was a loooong time ago, so yeah... she should probably have her horn there.

I know about that story which was in a kid's novel. I know it's "official" but "official" doesn't always mean "canon."Β

It's an official book. And I'm pretty sure that the writers OK these things before they're published (as with the Rarity microseries, in which the first draft was rejected for being to similar to a S4 episode). I take that as the writers OKing things that don't/won't step on the toes of episodes they're planning, which also means that they're never going to address Cadance's past in an episode if they let a book do it for them.

This is the short of thing I need to hear from the writers. It would almost be worth it of me to open a Twitter account and just flat out ask them. I'm a huge stickler for canon and I like official confirmation on certain questions that are raised in meta materials like the books and comics. As far as I know, it was never officially stated that Cadence's past in the book fits the overall canon set by the show.

From what I heard, most of those comic books are considered cannon by those on the show.
They are essentially ''bits of story/lore people on the show wanted to expand on, but didn't have time to put in the episode(s)/series''.
Some searches on EQD would most probably give more information.

The Cadence story was a kid's novel which is why I'm hesitant to say it's canon. The comics didn't expand on her backstory to my knowledge.

No, the writers from the show didn't write the books or comics. Β However, it's Hasbro themselves that license and determine who's going to make something canon or not. Β I could be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that Hasbro has made these books canon. Β Again I could be totally wrong on that, but I'm pretty sure that the book is canon.

I'm not too sure about that. The Inuyasha films aren't canon to the show or manga but I believe the screenplays were written with Rumiko Takahashi's input. That makes them official but not canon.

From the standpoint of the Inuyasha films you may be correct. Β However, I'm pretty sure that Hasbro has the books as canon. Β I know the comics aren't...but I think the books are. Β Honestly at this point I think the only way to fully solve this is to do some digging.
