yes, AU. alternate universe. In this version, tirek's return and defeat was all a ploy to kick Tia and Luna out of the throne orchestrated by Sunset Shimmer.

In my opinion, the two of them might be even happier. The ponies are taking care of themselves and possibly have a chance at not screwing things up, so the two of them get an indefinite vacation and lots of quality sister time.

...Really? A Celestia and Luna bashing plot? MARVELOUS! As if there wasn't enough of that already! What is it with people and expecting the leaders of a country to risk their lives in battle? What's with that? WHY is it that fighting off monsters is the only criteria for being a good ruler?! DO YOU THINK THAT'S NEARLY AS IMPORTANT AS USHERING A GOLDEN AGE OF PROSPERITY FOR A THOUSAND YEARS?! No, I guess not. I'm sure Sunset Shimmer and her university grades in magic research will allow her to run a country with no problem. All on her own merits of unleashing a magic-eating monster and plotting a coup. RIGHT.

I don't see how you identify this as a bashing plot. Yes, Sunset Shimmer is calling Celestia and Luna out on mistakes made. But we've only got her word for it that her motives are so noble. Shock horror, villains lie!
Going on from this- I don't really see the Equestrian populace being too happy with Princess Celestia just being dispensed with and Sunset installing herself in her place in what essentially amounts to a bloodless coup. It's too early to call this a bashing plot yet- once we've seen how Sunset deals with the obvious and immediate problems ahead, there's more grounds to make that judgement on. Twilight and Cadance are likely passively going along with it for now not because they agree, but because A) this is something of an outside-context bolt out of the blue that they don't know how to respond to, and B) given that she's taken both Celestia and Luna's power for her own, Sunset could squash them both without even trying at this point.
I semi-expect Sunset to suffer what one might call Cersei Lannister Syndrome- skilled, adroit plotter turns out to make an utterly lousy ruler.

There is absolutely nothing in the comic itself that support the idea of Twilight and Cadence going along passively with those reasons either. They have the expressions of people listening to a conversation about the weather when Sunset Shimmer is insulting their aunt/mentor to their faces. Not a word, not a gasp, no nothing, they just look at it and wait for Sunset to finish her ranting. Knowing Twilight, power levels would be the last thing on her mind if that were to happen.
Not to mention, this explicitely changes the plot of the last finale where Celestia did have at least something planned in case of Tirek break out, but here it cannot happen for the sake of the plot... and the argument to bash Celestia and Luna as weak rulers. Neither of them offer any defense to their actions, Celestia just goes "well, we lost a lot of powers before..." and boom, transition to the both of them outside of Canterlot, presumably dethroned.
Is it too early? Yeah, most likely, but there is no sign of it being anything else yet.

Woah, when Sunset said she wasn't going to return Celestia and Luna's magic I thought it was for a diabolical reason, but showing this as a sign of punishment for their absence makes perfect sense.

And Sunset's line of reasoning is flawed. Flawed in the way that if Celestia and Luna did everything, Twilight wouldn't be a princess at all. She'd still be in Canterlot, she'd still be a shut-in, and Luna could well possibly be dead, or imprisoned again.
It's a flimsy excuse that smells of dictatorship, which will not last in the slightest, because the populace loves the princesses. They aren't going to bow down to some out of nowhere former student.Β
And this doesn't fit Sunset's character, well, not her character after the first Equestria Girls....Something's up....SHE"S A CHANGELING!
