Pfft.  That's the least of his problems concerning that movie.  He should be happy they turned him pretty much into Iron-man.  Unfortunately, that's about the only good thing that could be said of that movie pretty much (well the other re-designs of the characters were ok too).

I only saw it the other day - and...hm, I agree. Would have liked to have seen the cyborg team doing their thing, really, not just a few of them and a whole lot of philosophy.

Indeed.  Am not much for the whole series, but it is certainly obvious what kind of show it was.  It's a kid's show with a group of superheroes.  These kinds of shows always stress teamwork and friendship among the group, and yet what do they do in the movie?  They pretty much remove 2 of the cyborgs early on, and you see nothing of them till the very end.  Hek, you don't see much of the other cyborgs beyond 009 and maybe 003 and 002 (that is in terms of the total amount of air time they get).  I can understand how difficult it would be in the time they have for a movie to work with at least 9 different characters (especially ones which those new to franchise aren't familiar with).  I mean, it isn't as if the show itself focuses so much on each cyborg, but it was still ridiculous.

As for the "philosophy"...just no.  Why they went with the approach they did and thought it could work completely baffles me.  This isn't Ghost in the Shell (and yes I do realize who made this particular film), and even if it was, I can't see how you could add something of "depth" in between at least 9 characters where there is probably bound to be a good deal of action going on in between and add (or perhaps I should minus that is in terms of time) to that any additional material such as cheap romance and sex (...yeah about that in this movie...again this is coming from a kid's show and yet they added this...why?), some comic relief, etc. and you pretty much have no time left to flesh out some cool plot or some particular theme or riddle of life if you will that will make the movie decent (that and as far as I'm concerned the lack of an actual physical antagonist doesn't really help either).  Hek I don't think despite what others claim that that 90s Ghost in the Shell movie did a particularly great job at going this route as well.  It just isn't for me worth doing this sort of thing in the amount of time.  It just comes off as silly to have some kick ass action going on only to be stopped full forced with some plot which makes not a lick of sense and which it seems has to be explained to us even though it still isn't really in the end instead of trying to as in any other movie spread out the point of course of the plot throughout its length.  It was fine in the series, that is, the Stand Alone Complex series where they had plenty of time to unveil things and focus on some character development and backstory, but silly to me in one of the movies unless of course you were a fan of the whole franchise before (in which case you would already be familiar with everything but the particular plot of the movie).

Personally, I'm starting to think few of these folks in the movie industry (that is not to mean just live action movies) shouldn't even bother doing that sort of thing (that is make a movie based on some of the great themes of life for example) at all in movies anyway especially if they're going to burn a great deal of it with a lot of action scenes, comic relief, introductions to characters, equipment, etc., romance, etc.  They should have just brought back Black Ghost or some new cyborg maybe (I don't know, how about Cyborg 000) who wanted to revive the Black Ghost organization.  It probably wouldn't have been a grandslam, but it at least wouldn't have probably been pure garbage either.

I think I have said a mouthful, so I will stop here.  This has certainly been quite a rant.

Wow. For someone who isn't a huge fan, you're quite passionate, there. Which, may I add, is not a bad thing. Most of what you write is valid - while I wouldn't say the show is exclusively for kids, there are plenty of character- and team-based plots that were never fully explored in the show that had excellent potential. Hell, even the Gods War would have been more satisfying!

Yeah, that bit above is just one of those "I can't take it any more, here comes the rant" moments I guess.  It does seem strange to complain that much about such, but I'm just sort of tired of some of the things I've been seeing done in animes, games, or what-so-have-you where everything is purposely contrived to be ambivalent.

That and I find this whole thing to just be one of those perfect examples of things that need to be stopped.  That is this ridiculous pretentious "let's make things deep" idea about some particular stories only for these folks to give this or other things what I call the sort of Hollywood treatment/formula, which essentially amounts to: 1) intentional in your face sex appeal and/or cheap romance and sex, 2) explosions/action (well can't really complain much on the purely action side if it is supposed to be an Action movie), 3) some substandard clichés and comic relief, and 4) a shotty and/or convoluted plot.  Add in there "philosophy" of the caliber I loathe seeing nowadays, and I have myself something that's going to send me off in a rant.

Apparently these people didn't learn that sometimes simple but well made is generally better than overly convoluted/ambitions and poorly executed and written, but also more importantly how do you go from the original to this monstrosity?
