Description DOWNLOAD FOR FULLVIEW!

I noticed a lack of MLP-style-in-Inkscape tutorials on dA ... also, my bf mentioning (somewhat in passing) a desire to give Inkscape a try. In the interests of getting him and YOU to draw some ponies, I threw this humble tutorial together.

Skill level is beginner+, all you need to do is read this and download Inkscape if you haven't already [link] and you'll be ready to go! This is a complete walkthrough, including Inkscape basics!

So, to any Inkscape newbies or aspiring pony-makers who stumble across this tutorial - I hope you get some use out of it.

To ~cptlfrghtr - YOU BETTER GET SOME USE OUT OF IT. u__u

Have you figured out how to make the hard edges into sharp ones yet? How would I do that?

This was really fantastic..

I've never done artwork before and thought I never would be able to.. But on a whim I downloaded Inkscape today determined to make a pony, immediately found this, and after some hours trying to figure out what I'm doing, history was made..

This is very well done. Written thoroughly and gentle enough for someone who has -never- even touched a digital art program outside of Paint. I followed your directions and afterwards felt comfortable dicking around a bit on my own to add a little extra life and detail to my little pony. She may not be the best looking or exciting out there but she's happy to be alive and you helped make that happen~

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the effort that went into making something like this for the hopeless like me.
I won't be world famous tomorrow but if I ever become big, this is where it all started. :3

Oh and just, before I go, here...meet Luscious Peach! Don't worry, she's a little shy but super friendly..~

FlameSpyro1 [2013-05-27 16:10:58 +0000 UTC]

hey does anyone know if inkscape can be used with a computer drawing pad?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BellaCielo In reply to FlameSpyro1 [2013-05-27 17:54:22 +0000 UTC]

I assume you mean a pen-input graphics tablet? If so, yes it can be used with a graphics tablet (I use my Wacom Bamboo in Inkscape from time to time, for instance), however the nature of vector art makes it less suited to a pen-tablet then, say, GIMP or Photoshop.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FlameSpyro1 In reply to BellaCielo [2013-05-27 18:48:22 +0000 UTC]

so your saying a pen-input tablet is better for inkscape than gimp or photoshop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BellaCielo In reply to FlameSpyro1 [2013-05-28 02:12:37 +0000 UTC]

The opposite, actually. A pen-input tablet is pretty much necessary for working in Photoshop or GIMP. But usually, it's easy to get by in Inkscape with only a keyboard and a mouse.

The only time when a graphics tablet is helpful (or necessary) in Inkscape is when working with the freehand or calligraphy tools.

I might actually be decent at this! With practice, of course. Thanks for the tutorial!

BellaCielo In reply to TheNinJay [2013-05-27 17:57:39 +0000 UTC]

Not a problem! There's definitely a learning curve in vector graphics but it's really not as awful as many folks make it out to be.

TheNinJay [2013-02-24 21:21:30 +0000 UTC]

Ohmahglob this is hard. I think I'll throw a bit of time into practicing, though.

Now I know what I'm going to learn for the next couple weeks instead of calculus, logic design, or any of my IMPORTANT college classes. Thanks...

But really, this has inspired me to start trying this instead of pencil and paper. A proper thank you is in order.

I must thank you, ma'am. Though, I pray this does not bite me in my posterior.

Is this even considered drawing? (Just wondering)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BellaCielo In reply to Pwney [2013-01-04 23:21:36 +0000 UTC]

That's a good question. I suppose it's a matter of semantics, but I've always likened vector drawing more to sculpting than traditional, pen-and-paper (or stylus-and-tablet) drawing.
